Yes—the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat can be added to Apple Home. But “works with HomeKit” needs an important qualification: it uses Matter, not a traditional native Nest-to-HomeKit connection. You must still set it up with the Google Home app and a Google account, while Apple Home provides a useful but potentially narrower control layer.

That makes the Nest Learning Thermostat 4 a strong choice for Google Home households and a reasonable compromise for Apple Home users—not the best fit for anyone who wants a completely Google-free thermostat.

Verdict: excellent hardware, imperfect Apple-first experience

The Nest Learning Thermostat 4 solves the biggest problem older Nest models created for Apple households: it can participate in an Apple Home setup through Matter. Once paired, Apple Home can provide standard thermostat controls such as viewing temperature, changing the target temperature, and—where exposed by the Matter implementation—switching operating modes.

However, the thermostat remains a Google product. Google Home is required for initial setup, HVAC configuration, advanced settings, Nest learning features, and much of the device’s management. Apple Home should be treated as a cross-platform control surface, not a replacement for Google Home.

  • Beautiful design: With a 60% larger display[11] and Dynamic Farsight, you can see info from across the room[1]; choose the design, like a clock or the weather; it automatically adjusts brightness for the best readability or you can adjust manually

Buy it if you want Nest’s design, learning features, and included remote sensor while accepting two ecosystems. Choose ecobee instead if Apple Home is your only acceptable platform or if room-based control matters more than Nest’s learning model. Consider a Starling Home Hub if you already own an older compatible Nest and want Apple Home integration without replacing the thermostat.

Google’s technical specifications describe the fourth-generation model as compatible with Google Home and Matter-enabled third-party platforms, including Apple Home. Google’s specifications are the best source for model and compatibility details.

What “HomeKit support” actually means

In practical terms, the Nest Learning Thermostat 4 communicates with Apple Home using Matter. Matter is a cross-platform smart-home standard that allows a compatible device to be commissioned into more than one supported smart-home ecosystem. Google says Matter devices can be controlled by multiple Matter-certified apps, including Google Home, Apple Home, and Amazon Alexa. Google’s Matter guidance explains the multi-platform model.

That is different from a conventional native HomeKit accessory. Matter exposes standardized device functions; it does not automatically expose every proprietary feature built into the manufacturer’s app.

Question Answer
Can it appear in Apple Home? Yes, through Matter.
Is setup Apple-only? No. Google Home and a Google account are required for initial setup.
Does Apple Home replace Google Home? No. Google Home remains the richer management app.
Can Siri control it? Yes, for functions Apple Home exposes after pairing; command coverage may be narrower than Google Home’s.
Does Matter expose every Nest feature? No. Learning, energy, equipment, and sensor-management features may remain Google-centric.

What you can expect to control in Apple Home

Apple Home is most useful for ordinary thermostat control and for combining the thermostat with other Apple Home accessories. You should be able to view the thermostat’s current temperature and adjust the target temperature. Heating, cooling, and off-mode controls should be verified after pairing because the exact controls presented can depend on the device’s Matter implementation, software version, and Apple Home environment.

Once the thermostat is visible in Apple Home, exposed readings or states may be used in Apple Home automations. For example, an automation could respond to a temperature threshold or coordinate the thermostat with occupancy-related devices. Do not assume that every Nest state—including every occupancy interpretation—is available to Apple Home.

Siri can control whatever Apple Home exposes. That makes voice control possible without asking Google Assistant, but it does not give Siri access to Nest’s entire learning and energy-management system.

Apple Home feature matrix

Capability Google Home Apple Home through Matter Important limitation
View current temperature Yes Expected for the thermostat; verify after pairing Presentation can vary by Apple Home version.
Change target temperature Yes Yes for the standard thermostat control This is the core Matter use case.
Switch heating, cooling, or off Yes Verify exposed modes Do not assume identical mode handling.
Use the included remote sensor Yes Firmware-dependent Version 2.4 adds Matter bridge support for thermostat sensors.
Manage the learning system Yes Do not assume Learning is a Google feature, not a generic Matter control.
Manage Smart Schedule Yes Not equivalent to Google Home Apple automations are separate from Nest’s schedule.
Adaptive Eco, Seasonal Savings, or Energy Shift Yes or Google-first Do not assume These depend on Nest software and account services.
Firmware and advanced HVAC settings Google Home Likely Google Home Use Google Home for configuration and troubleshooting.
Siri control No Apple Siri control For exposed controls Voice commands cannot unlock hidden Nest features.

The sensor situation is particularly important. The thermostat includes a second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor, and Google’s April 30, 2026 software history lists version 2.4 as adding Matter bridge support that enables thermostat sensors to work with other Matter-enabled devices. Check the current software history and verify the installed firmware before relying on sensor visibility or automation support. Older reviews may predate this change.

Setup: Google Home first, Apple Home second

An iPhone does not let you complete the whole installation inside Apple Home. Google’s setup instructions require the Google Home app and a Google account. Follow Google’s current installation guide for the exact on-screen sequence.

  1. Install Google Home and sign in with a Google account.
  2. Scan the thermostat’s QR code and add it to the correct Google Home.
  3. Run the HVAC compatibility and power checks. This is where the app may identify wiring or power problems.
  4. Turn off HVAC power at the breaker before removing the old thermostat.
  5. Label the existing wires, install the base and thermostat, and use the included trim plate if needed.
  6. Complete the system test and calibration in Google Home.
  7. Configure the included Nest Temperature Sensor and confirm its role in Google Home.
  8. Retrieve or scan the Matter pairing code.
  9. Add the thermostat to Apple Home as a Matter accessory. This normally adds it to Apple Home rather than transferring it out of Google Home.
  10. Test the basics: current temperature, target temperature, operating mode, Siri control, and at least one Apple Home automation.

The device should be fully functional in Google Home before you attempt the second ecosystem. If pairing fails, do not start rewiring HVAC equipment just because Apple Home cannot see the thermostat; first treat it as a Matter-network or commissioning problem.

Matter network requirements

You need an online, Matter-capable Apple Home hub. The hub must be able to communicate with the thermostat over the home network. Google specifically warns that IPv6 is required for reliable Matter operation. Review Google’s Matter network requirements if discovery or remote control fails.

  • Keep the thermostat and Apple Home hub on a trusted network rather than a guest network.
  • Check that the router is not isolating wireless clients.
  • Be cautious with VLANs and firewall rules that block local discovery.
  • Confirm the Apple Home hub is online and signed into the intended home.
  • Ensure the Google and Apple ecosystems can reach the same physical network.
  • If a Matter pairing code was previously used elsewhere, generate or retrieve a fresh code as directed by the app.

Matter can provide local network communication for the functions it exposes, but that does not make every Nest feature local. Google’s learning, energy, account, firmware, and advanced configuration functions can still depend on Google Home and Google’s services.

What Google Home still does better

The word “Learning” remains a Google Home promise, not an Apple Home feature guarantee. Google lists the fourth-generation model with features including Smart Schedule, Adaptive Eco, Adaptive Comfort, Home/Away Routines, Seasonal Savings, Heat Pump Balance, Humidity Helper, Savings Finder, air-filter reminders, HVAC system health monitoring, and detailed equipment configuration. Google’s comparison chart separates these capabilities from the less feature-rich Nest Thermostat.

Expect Google Home to remain the primary place for:

  • Learning preferences and Smart Schedule.
  • Adaptive Eco, Adaptive Comfort, Seasonal Savings, and Energy Shift.
  • Home/Away Routines and Nest-specific occupancy behavior.
  • Heat-pump balancing and auxiliary or emergency heat configuration.
  • Humidity Helper, ventilation, humidifier, and dehumidifier settings.
  • Air-filter reminders and HVAC health information.
  • Sensor selection, sensor preferences, equipment configuration, firmware, and advanced settings.

Apple Home can still be the better daily dashboard if your household already uses Apple devices. The trade-off is that the thermostat’s deepest intelligence remains in Google’s app.

Remote sensor: useful, but check the firmware

The included second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor is one of the thermostat’s practical advantages. In Google Home, it can help the system account for conditions in another room rather than relying only on the thermostat’s built-in reading.

For Apple Home users, verify four separate things:

  1. Whether the sensor appears as a separate Matter device or reading.
  2. Whether Apple Home receives temperature only or also occupancy-related data.
  3. Whether Apple Home automations can use that reading.
  4. Whether Google Home is still required to choose the active control sensor or change sensor preferences.

Version 2.4 is significant because Google documents Matter bridge support for thermostat sensors. That does not justify a blanket claim that every sensor feature is available in Apple Home on every installation. Record the firmware version and test the sensor after pairing.

Older Nest Temperature Sensors may require migration or reconfiguration, and compatibility should be confirmed in Google Home rather than assumed from the presence of the included sensor.

HVAC compatibility: check before buying

Google describes the thermostat as supporting most conventional 24-volt systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced-air, heat-pump, and radiant systems. Its published limits include up to three stages of conventional heating and two stages of cooling. Heat-pump systems can use up to four heating stages made up of two heat-pump stages and two alternate-heating stages. The thermostat can also support fan control and connections for humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and ventilation equipment where the installation is compatible.

Use Google’s HVAC compatibility guidance and the official compatibility checker before ordering. “Most 24-volt systems” is not enough information for a complicated installation.

Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen, 2024) with Nest Temperature Sensor - Energy Saving Smart Thermostat - Compatible with Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Home App - Polished Gold
  • Nest’s smartest, most advanced thermostat yet, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is a beautiful, brilliant way to save energy, keep your home comfortable, and help make sure your heating and cooling systems are running smoothly[4]
  • Savings you can count on: The Nest Learning Thermostat can help save up to 31% on heating and cooling bills[2]

  • Beautiful design: With a 60% larger display[11] and Dynamic Farsight, you can see info from across the room[1]; choose the design, like a clock or the weather; it automatically adjusts brightness for the best readability or you can adjust manually

Be especially cautious with:

  • 120- or 240-volt high-voltage systems.
  • Proprietary communicating HVAC equipment.
  • Zone-control panels.
  • Heat pumps with unusual staging or auxiliary-heat arrangements.
  • Systems exceeding the published heating or cooling stages.
  • International boilers or dry-contact systems.
  • Installations that need dedicated common-wire power.
  • Thick, stranded, or wire-nut wiring that does not match ordinary thermostat terminals.

If your system includes zoning, a heat pump, multiple stages, or humidity equipment, consider a Google Nest Pro installation rather than guessing. Professional installation is not mandatory for a compatible, clearly labeled system, but it is sensible when wiring or staging is uncertain.

C-wire and power-sharing behavior

The fourth-generation thermostat is designed to operate without a common C wire in many homes using Google’s Power Sharing technology. Google lists limited cases—under 1% on its technical-specification page—in which a C wire or Nest Power Connector may be necessary. That is not the same as saying a C wire is never required.

Google specifically warns that heating-only systems, cooling-only systems, zone-controlled systems, heat pumps, and systems with insufficient power in particular operating states can require a C wire or compatible power accessory. Read Google’s C-wire guidance and let the compatibility checker make the first assessment.

Symptoms of a power problem can include battery-drain warnings, intermittent shutdowns, failed setup, or unstable operation during certain heating or cooling cycles. The Nest Power Connector may help in compatible installations, but it is not a universal solution for proprietary or otherwise incompatible HVAC systems.

Design and daily use

The hardware is a major reason to consider this model. Verified specifications list a 3.9-inch diameter, 1.1-inch depth, and a 2.68-inch display with 600-by-600-pixel resolution. The display unit weighs 5.7 ounces, or 161.8 grams. Finishes include Polished Silver, Polished Gold, and Polished Obsidian. See Google’s full specifications.

The rotating outer metal ring remains the defining physical control. It is faster and more deliberate than repeatedly tapping a small touchscreen, while proximity and motion sensing allow the display to present information when someone approaches. The dynamic display can be useful from across the room, though buyers who prefer a permanently quiet, minimal interface may find the animations more noticeable than necessary.

The included trim plate can cover marks left by a previous thermostat and may avoid repainting. Whether it looks attractive depends on the wall color and finish; it is worth checking the dimensions before assuming it will disappear visually.

On the wall, the thermostat provides useful at-a-glance information without opening an app. In Apple Home, however, daily convenience depends on the quality of your Matter pairing and whether your preferred controls are exposed consistently across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and HomePod. Test the devices you actually use rather than assuming identical behavior across Apple platforms.

Learning and energy features: useful, not guaranteed savings

Nest’s learning and energy tools are intended to reduce unnecessary heating and cooling by adapting schedules, occupancy behavior, and temperature settings. They may be valuable, but they are not a promise of a specific reduction in utility bills.

Actual results depend on climate, insulation, HVAC efficiency, indoor temperature targets, electricity or fuel prices, occupancy, and how much control the household gives the thermostat. A short before-and-after comparison is not a controlled energy test.

Without those controls, describe the result as personal experience rather than measured proof.

Reliability, privacy, and cloud dependence

The Matter functions exposed to Apple Home can use local home-network communication, which can be useful when internet access is interrupted. But local Matter control should not be confused with complete offline operation of the Nest product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Home and a Google account remain necessary for initial setup. Google Home is also the likely destination for firmware, advanced equipment settings, learning features, sensor management, and account-linked energy tools. If the Google Home app is removed after setup, basic Apple Home control may continue, but you should not assume that every configuration or maintenance function will remain available. Likewise, Apple Home being unavailable does not necessarily prevent Google Home control.

Before buying, decide whether maintaining both a Google account and Apple Home is acceptable. The fourth-generation Nest is cross-platform, but it is not manufacturer-neutral.

Common Matter and installation failures

Troubleshooting box

  1. Confirm the thermostat works fully in Google Home.
  2. Update its firmware before testing Apple Home sensor behavior.
  3. Confirm the Apple Home hub is online.
  4. Verify IPv6 is enabled on the network.
  5. Move the thermostat and hub off guest networks and disable client isolation.
  6. Check VLAN and firewall rules that may block local Matter discovery.
  7. Generate or retrieve a fresh Matter pairing code.
  8. Remove the failed accessory entry from Apple Home before retrying.
  9. Reboot the thermostat, router, and Apple Home hub.
  10. Re-run Google’s compatibility and HVAC system tests.

If the thermostat passes Google Home setup but not Apple Home pairing, suspect Matter commissioning, network segmentation, an existing Matter fabric, an offline Apple Home hub, or outdated firmware before suspecting the HVAC wiring. Contact Google support or an HVAC professional before rewiring unfamiliar equipment.

Other model- and network-dependent failure modes include the thermostat appearing in Google Home but not Apple Home, controls working locally but not remotely, the remote sensor failing to appear, and the HVAC system passing basic setup while exposing fewer stages or accessories than expected.

How it compares with alternatives

ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium

The ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium is the more natural alternative for buyers who prioritize Apple Home, room sensors, and a less Google-centered experience. Confirm the live price, included sensor package, current Matter or HomeKit support, and any subscription-related features before purchase because those details can change.

ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced

The ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced targets buyers who want ecobee’s core smart-thermostat experience at a lower tier than Premium. It is less compelling if your priority is Nest’s learning behavior, Google integration, or the Nest design.

Honeywell Home

Honeywell Home smart thermostats deserve consideration when your HVAC installer already favors Resideo equipment or your system has compatibility characteristics better matched to that ecosystem. They are not the obvious choice for someone specifically seeking Nest’s automatic learning model.

Older Nest plus Starling Home Hub

If you already own an older compatible Nest, Starling Home Hub can add broader Apple Home integration without replacing the thermostat. It is a different architecture from official Matter support: the bridge adds another device, network dependency, vendor, and possible failure point. It makes the most sense for existing owners, not necessarily for a new buyer seeking the simplest long-term setup.

Less expensive Nest Thermostat

The cheaper Nest Thermostat may be sufficient if you mainly want basic temperature control and Google Home integration. It is not the right choice if you specifically want the fourth-generation Learning Thermostat’s learning features, included second-generation sensor, premium display, or official Matter route to Apple Home.

Price, warranty, and value

Google announced a U.S. launch MSRP of $279.99 on August 20, 2024. That is a launch price, not a confirmed September 2026 street price; check the live Google Store listing and major retailers before publication or purchase. Google lists a two-year retail warranty and a five-year warranty for HVAC professionals.

At a premium price, the Nest’s value depends on the features you will actually use. Paying extra makes sense for the design, learning behavior, remote sensing, advanced energy tools, and Matter compatibility together. It makes less sense if your only goal is Apple Home temperature control, because a more Apple-oriented thermostat may provide a simpler experience.

Who should buy it?

  • Best for Google Home households: You get the fullest feature set and the intended setup experience.
  • Best for Apple Home users willing to compromise: You can use Apple Home for daily control while keeping Google Home for setup and advanced features.
  • Best for design-conscious buyers: The ring, display, finishes, and trim plate are among the strongest hardware reasons to choose it.
  • Not ideal for Apple-only homes: Google Home and a Google account are not optional during setup.
  • Not ideal for unusual HVAC systems: Verify communicating equipment, zones, stages, heat pumps, and accessories first.
  • Not ideal for guaranteed savings: No thermostat can promise a fixed reduction in bills without controlled, home-specific testing.
