Apple’s Tabletop Robot Is Still a Rumor—and May Arrive in 2027 or Later

Apple’s rumored $1,000 tabletop robot is not confirmed and may arrive in 2027 or later. Here’s how it differs from the simpler Apple home hub reportedly coming sooner.

Apple has reportedly been developing a tabletop smart-home device with a motorized robotic arm, but it has not announced the product. The original report described a 2026–2027 target and an internal price goal of roughly $1,000. Later reporting separates that premium robotic hub from a simpler smart-home display expected sooner, placing the robotic version in 2027 or later—with a possible slip into 2028.

The original report was real, but the headline is now stale

In August 2024, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was working on a tabletop device combining an iPad-like display with a thin robotic arm. Secondary coverage identified the internal project code name as J595. Apple has not publicly confirmed the code name, specifications, release schedule or price.

The reported device was designed as a smart-home command center, FaceTime and videoconferencing screen, and remote home-security monitor. Its display could reportedly tilt up and down, rotate through as much as 360 degrees and reorient toward people in the room. The original target was described as 2026 or 2027, with Apple trying to bring the cost to approximately $1,000.

That makes “as soon as 2026” an early development target—not a confirmed launch date. Later reports place the robotic model further out, potentially in 2027 or beyond, while one report has warned that it could slip into 2028. Bloomberg’s original report and more recent roadmap coverage should therefore be read together.

What kind of robot is it?

This is not a household robot that walks around, cleans floors, carries objects or performs physical chores. The “robot” appears to be a stationary smart display mounted on a motorized arm.

  • Tilting the screen to improve the viewing angle.
  • Rotating the display toward someone speaking or watching.
  • Following a person during FaceTime or another room-based interaction.
  • Potentially presenting different information depending on who is nearby.

A more accurate description would be robotically articulated smart display or moving home hub. The arm could make the device feel more present and useful than a fixed screen, but it would not give Apple a general-purpose domestic robot.

What would Apple’s robotic home device do?

Reports have associated the device with several Apple Home and communication features:

  • Controlling compatible smart lights, locks, thermostats and other home accessories.
  • Responding to Siri requests and newer Apple Intelligence capabilities.
  • Making FaceTime calls and improving camera framing as people move.
  • Playing music, video and other media.
  • Showing calendars, reminders, widgets and personalized information.
  • Monitoring the home remotely through its camera and connected security features.

The arm itself is only part of the proposition. The product would need accurate voice recognition, dependable facial recognition, fast responses and reliable control of household devices. If Siri cannot understand a request or the screen displays the wrong person’s information, a $1,000 moving display would be difficult to justify.

Why would the screen need to move?

A fixed smart display can be hard to see from different parts of a kitchen or living area. A motorized screen could turn toward someone cooking, adjust its angle for a video call or remain visible as a person moves around the room.

That might make FaceTime feel more natural and give the device a stronger shared-room presence than an iPad left on a counter. It could also let the display act as a more visible household interface rather than a personal device that belongs to one family member.

However, the movement may also be a premium differentiator rather than an essential feature. Motors and actuators add cost, noise, power consumption and mechanical wear. They create additional failure points, including calibration drift, inconvenient stopping positions, cable-management issues and the risk of the display being knocked over on a crowded countertop.

Apple appears to be planning two different home devices

The most important update is that the original robotic product should not be confused with the nearer-term Apple smart-home hub described in 2026 reports.

Reported standard home hub Reported robotic home hub
Approximately 7-inch display Larger display, later reported at approximately 9 inches
Tabletop and possible wall-mounted versions Display mounted on a motorized robotic limb
HomePod-like speaker functions Higher-end audio, display and movement concept
FaceTime and smart-home controls FaceTime with more advanced room-following behavior
Reported as the product approaching launch Reported as a later, more expensive product
Possible fall 2026 to early 2027 timing Reportedly 2027 or later, possibly 2028

MacRumors’ July 2026 reporting describes the simpler hub as a separate product. Other coverage, including iPhone in Canada and Macworld, likewise distinguish the nearer-term display hub from the later robotic model.

In practical terms, Apple may first test whether customers want a shared Apple Home screen before asking them to pay for a moving one. The product sometimes called “HomePad” in reports should not automatically be treated as the $1,000 robot.

Software may determine the launch date

Reports have linked Apple’s home-device plans to a new home-focused operating system sometimes called homeOS. The platform is reportedly based on tvOS, with elements resembling iOS and watchOS. Apple has not confirmed that homeOS will be the final commercial name.

The expected software capabilities include Siri, Apple Intelligence, voice recognition, facial recognition, HomeKit or Apple Home controls, FaceTime, widgets, clock faces and glanceable household information. The system would also need to separate personal information among multiple household members.

That software dependency helps explain the uncertain schedule. Reports say Apple’s home ambitions have been delayed while the company works on a more capable Siri and the artificial-intelligence features needed to make the hardware useful. A successful room-based assistant would need to:

  • Understand household context without requiring rigid commands.
  • Recognize who is speaking or viewing the screen.
  • Control devices consistently and quickly.
  • Surface useful information without being constantly prompted.
  • Protect calendars, messages, reminders and other private data.

A robotic arm can be manufactured before those problems are solved, but launching the hardware without mature software could make the product feel like an expensive demonstration.

What does “around $1,000” really mean?

The approximately $1,000 figure was reported as an internal target or effort to bring the device’s price down. It is not a confirmed Apple retail price and may no longer reflect the current plan.

The eventual price could be affected by the display, Apple silicon, cameras, microphones, speakers, sensors, actuators, privacy hardware, manufacturing yields and artificial-intelligence requirements. A separate base or more advanced camera system could raise the cost further.

For comparison, Apple’s U.S. buying pages showed the HomePod mini at $129 and the HomePod at $349 when reviewed in August 2026. Those are observed U.S. prices and can change. Neither product includes a display or robotic movement, but they show how much more consumers would be paying for the rumored device’s screen, camera, mechanisms and software ambitions.

Use “reported target of roughly $1,000,” not “$1,000 price.” Apple could ultimately price the robotic hub higher, lower or never release it.

Why the iPad comparison matters

An iPad on a stand already provides FaceTime, media playback, web access and Apple Home controls. A buyer could also pair it with a HomePod mini for room audio and voice control. The iPad-based approach is less integrated, but it is flexible: the tablet can be removed from the stand and used elsewhere.

The rumored robot would need to offer something meaningfully better:

  • An always-present shared household interface.
  • Automatic screen positioning as people move.
  • Better hands-free interaction.
  • More natural video-call framing.
  • Stronger integration between visual information, Siri and home automation.

If the arm mainly moves for visual effect, an iPad setup or fixed smart display could be better value. If it reliably keeps information visible, follows participants during calls and handles household requests without friction, the premium could be more defensible.

  • GREAT FOR HOMES WITH PETS. Tangle‑free rubber brushes capture pet fur without clogging, eliminating constant stops to cut hair off the brush.
  • EVERY CLEAN STARTS WITH A FRESH MOP—NOT YESTERDAY’S DIRT. The AutoWash Dock washes and heat‑dries mop pads at 113°F after every run, preventing odors and buildup so floors aren’t cleaned with yesterday’s dirt.

Readers wanting an Apple display today should not buy an unofficial “preorder” or concept product based on the old rumor. The reported device has no official product page or ordering path. An iPad-based tabletop setup, a HomePod, or an Apple TV and HomePod combination are the real alternatives currently available.

Privacy and reliability are central risks

A camera and microphone that can turn toward people may be useful for FaceTime and security monitoring, but they also raise understandable privacy concerns. Apple would need clear controls for camera access, microphone activation, recording and facial recognition.

Potential failure modes include:

  • The device identifying the wrong household member.
  • A calendar, message or reminder appearing for someone who should not see it.
  • Accidental wake-word activation.
  • Camera tracking that feels intrusive.
  • Delayed or incorrect smart-home commands.
  • Compatibility problems with existing HomeKit and Matter accessories.
  • Siri features arriving after the hardware ships.

The mechanical system introduces its own concerns: motor failure, noisy movement, lost calibration, grease or dust in kitchens, spills, countertop instability and unexpected screen rotation. Apple would need to make the device safe around children and pets as well as dependable enough for everyday use.

Who might actually want one?

The strongest audience would likely be Apple households that already use compatible smart-home accessories and want a shared interface rather than another personal phone or tablet. Frequent FaceTime users in kitchens and living rooms could also benefit from automatic framing.

Smart-home enthusiasts may value a premium Apple ecosystem device, especially if it combines Home control, information, communication and audio in one unit. But the objections are substantial: a $1,000 device could be excessive for timers, music and lights, and it would still be an additional screen rather than a replacement for a phone, tablet or television.

Who is reportedly leading the project?

The project has reportedly been associated with Kevin Lynch, an Apple executive connected with the Apple Watch effort and the former car project. That detail comes from reporting and should not be interpreted as an official Apple confirmation of the product.

Verdict: real project, uncertain product

Apple’s tabletop robotic home device is based on a genuine Bloomberg report, not an invented product rumor. But it remains unannounced, and “robot” describes a moving display—not a machine capable of household chores.

The original 2026–2027 window was an early reported target. Current reporting points to a simpler Apple home hub first and a more expensive robotic version in 2027 or later, with a possible 2028 delay. The roughly $1,000 figure is an old reported development target, not a confirmed MSRP.

The sensible expectation is to watch for Apple’s standard smart-home hub before drawing conclusions about the robot. The robotic version will only make sense if its movement, Siri capabilities, personalization and privacy controls solve problems that an iPad on a stand cannot.
