Sauces, flour, grease, and splashes can quickly turn cooking clothes into a cleanup job. The best apron depends on what you need most: full coverage, a comfortable fit, useful pockets, light or structured fabric, and care instructions that suit how often you cook.
Based on Good Housekeeping Institute and Test Kitchen hands-on evaluation of more than 40 apron styles, these are the five strongest choices for different priorities. The testing was conducted by Good Housekeeping—not by the author of this article—so the recommendations below are attributed test results rather than firsthand claims.

How these aprons were evaluated
Good Housekeeping’s Kitchen Appliances & Innovation Lab worked with its Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab and Test Kitchen. Evaluators wore the aprons while performing kitchen tasks, then assessed fit, comfort, fabric thickness, pocket layout, tie length, neck-strap adjustment, and cleanability. Wash testing considered wrinkles, fading, shrinkage, and whether an apron could go in the dryer.

1. Hedley & Bennett All Day Crossback Apron: best overall
Good Housekeeping selected the Hedley & Bennett All Day Crossback Apron as its best overall apron. It is the most versatile pick here for cooks who want substantial coverage, a structured feel, and storage for small kitchen tools.
The racerback design provides broad chest coverage, while long waist ties help the apron fit a range of body types. Lap and chest pockets keep tools accessible, and a side loop can hold a towel or tongs. The cited dimensions are 33 by 30 inches, and the apron is made from cotton canvas.
Testing found that it washed well, but the thicker cotton is also its primary trade-off. If you dislike a substantial layer around your torso or want an apron that feels barely there, a lighter cotton or performance-fabric option may be more comfortable.
Recommended Free Tools
Best for: Cooks who want broad coverage, useful storage, and a crossback fit.
Watch-out: The fabric can feel heavy compared with lightweight alternatives.
2. Williams Sonoma Classic Stripe Apron: best value
The Williams Sonoma Classic Stripe Apron is Good Housekeeping’s best-value choice. Its cotton-canvas fabric is light enough for everyday use while still offering more substance than a very thin apron. Spacious lap pockets provide room for towels and utensils, and the waist ties are long enough to wrap around to the front.
It is also practical for frequent cooking: the review reports that it is machine washable and dryer-safe. The design is less storage-focused than the Hedley & Bennett crossback because it does not have a chest pocket. The front logo may also be more noticeable than some shoppers prefer.

3. HexClad Eco Modern Apron: best for bakers
The HexClad Eco Modern Apron stands out for its storage layout. Good Housekeeping named it the best apron for bakers because it has three center pockets—one large and two small—as well as a large hexagonal chest pocket secured with a snap.
That arrangement is useful when you need to carry several small items, such as a thermometer, measuring tools, recipe notes, or a towel. The apron also has an adjustable neck loop and a loop for a towel or utensil. Its recycled fabric was described as sturdy in testing.
The compromises are feel and care. Testers found the construction somewhat stiff and less body-conforming, and the apron should not go in the dryer. Machine washing is permitted, but plan to hang it to dry.
Best for: Bakers who value organized storage and a secure chest pocket.
Watch-out: It may feel stiff, and it is not dryer-safe.
4. Chef Works Ridgewood Apron: best on Amazon
Good Housekeeping identified the Chef Works Ridgewood Apron as its best apron on Amazon after testing five Chef Works styles. It is a straightforward, budget-conscious cotton apron with a comfortable medium-to-light weight, two large lap pockets, and ties long enough to wrap around the front.
Those large pockets make it a practical choice for holding a towel, tasting spoon, or other small tools without paying for a more elaborate design. However, coverage is the deciding limitation. The tested dimensions are 22.5 by 31.5 inches, so taller cooks or anyone working with heavy splashes may prefer a longer bib apron.

5. Hedley & Bennett Smock: best tie-free apron
The Hedley & Bennett Smock is Good Housekeeping’s best smock for cooks who dislike neck straps and waist ties. Instead of requiring several adjustments, it uses a built-in crossback design that you pull on over your clothes.
The cotton-linen blend gives it structure without making it feel excessively heavy. Testing found that it felt soft out of the package and remained soft after washing. Thick straps stay on the shoulders, and deep pockets help keep utensils from slipping out.
Its relatively short length may not satisfy cooks who want maximum lower-body coverage. It also starts above $100 in the cited review, though prices should be checked at publication time because they can change.
Best for: Cooks who want a quick pull-over apron without a neck strap or waist ties.

How to choose the right kitchen apron
Choose the apron style around the coverage you need
Bib and crossback aprons cover the torso and lower body, making them the safest starting point for frying, roasting, baking, and other messy tasks. A traditional bib apron generally uses an adjustable neck strap and waist ties. A crossback distributes support differently and can avoid the tight feeling some people experience around the neck.
Smocks use armholes and generally omit waist ties. They are quick to put on and remove, but the looser, pull-over fit may not feel as secure on every body type. The Hedley & Bennett Smock is the best match in this group for that design.
Waist or bistro aprons cover only the lower body. They work well when your main needs are wiping your hands, carrying a few small items, or keeping the front of your trousers clean. They are less suitable when you need chest protection from flour, sauce, oil, or splashes.
Match pockets to the tools you actually use
- Chest pockets: Useful for slim items such as a thermometer, pen, or small recipe reference.
- Large lap pockets: Better for towels, tongs, tasting spoons, and other bulkier tools.
- Multiple divided pockets: Helpful for bakers who carry several measuring or testing tools.
- Side loops: Convenient for a towel or tongs, but check that the loop is positioned where you can reach it easily.
Pockets can also become uncomfortable if they are overfilled. Consider whether you want storage or simply protection from stains; an apron with fewer, flatter pockets may be preferable for light kitchen work.
Check the tie design and adjustment range
Long waist ties make it easier to secure an apron comfortably and, for some body shapes, wrap the ties around to the front. An adjustable neck strap can improve fit, particularly when more than one person will use the apron. Crossback and smock designs reduce or eliminate neck and waist adjustments, but they rely more heavily on getting the overall size right.
Do not assume machine washable means dryer-safe
Care instructions are a meaningful difference among these picks. The Williams Sonoma Classic Stripe and Hedley & Bennett Smock reviews report dryer safety. The HexClad Eco Modern is machine washable but specifically should not be put in the dryer. For any product bought after publication, read the current care label or product page rather than relying only on an older review.
Consider fabric weight alongside durability
Canvas and other structured fabrics can provide better coverage and a more substantial feel, but they may feel warm or heavy during long cooking sessions. Lightweight cotton is easier to wear casually, while recycled or blended fabrics can have different stiffness, drying, and drape characteristics. There is no universally best weight: choose based on whether you cook briefly at home or spend hours working in a hot kitchen.

Choose the Williams Sonoma Classic Stripe if value, simple washing, and everyday use matter most. The HexClad Eco Modern is the most useful choice for bakers who need organized pockets, while the Chef Works Ridgewood is the clearest Amazon option for an inexpensive cotton apron. If you want to avoid both neck straps and waist ties, the Hedley & Bennett Smock is the specialized alternative—provided its shorter length and higher starting price work for you.
