6 Must-Have Woodturning Tools and How to Use Them

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful woodturning starter kit covers six jobs: roughing spindle stock, shaping spindle details, turning bowls, refining profiles, making narrow cuts, and smoothing. The right tools depend on whether you plan to turn spindles between centers, bowls and other faceplate work, or both—so “must-have” means a practical general-purpose grouping, not a universal shopping list.

Know which kind of turning you plan to do

Spindle turning shapes wood held between centers, as in a table leg or handle. Bowl and other faceplate turning work is mounted differently and calls for tools designed for that work. Some turning tools look similar but are not interchangeable: in particular, a spindle roughing gouge and spindle gouge are not substitutes for a bowl gouge.

The six-tool grouping described by Wood Magazine and represented in a Robert Sorby six-piece set includes a spindle roughing gouge, spindle gouge, bowl gouge, skew chisel, parting tool, and round-nose scraper. It is a useful map of common tasks, not a requirement to buy all six before starting.

The six tools and what they do

1. Spindle roughing gouge: bring spindle stock toward a cylinder

This tool removes material from square or uneven spindle stock to establish a roughly cylindrical form. Place it on the tool rest, let the bevel contact the wood, and raise the handle gently until the cutting edge engages. Work with controlled, light passes; the lathe manual describes beginning near the middle and progressing toward the ends, and warns against moving the roughing gouge backward because it can splinter the wood.

Robert Sorby H6542 Turning Tool Set (8 Piece)
  • This 8-pc HSS Turning Tool Set includes 3/4" Roughing Gouge
  • Overall lengths are 16" to 19"
  • This HSS Turning Tool Set includes 3/4" roughing gouge

Important: Use a spindle roughing gouge for spindle work only. It is not designed for roughing a bowl, where the interrupted cut and tool geometry can create a dangerous failure. See Woodcraft’s beginner guide and the Record Power lathe manual.

2. Spindle gouge: shape coves, beads, and detail

A spindle gouge refines a spindle after roughing and makes details such as coves, valleys, and beads. Set it on the rest, bring the bevel to the work, then raise the handle enough to begin a controlled cut. The bevel helps guide the edge, but the tool still needs steady support and a light touch.

Do not use a spindle gouge to turn bowls or hollow forms. Its bevel geometry is suited to spindle work and can catch or dig in on faceplate work, as the Record Power manual cautions.

3. Bowl gouge: shape bowls and faceplate turnings

A bowl gouge is intended for shaping the outside and inside of bowls and other faceplate turnings. Its deeper flute and different bevel geometry support cuts that a spindle gouge is not designed to make. Choose it when bowl or faceplate work is part of your plan rather than trying to adapt a spindle tool.

4. Skew chisel: refine profiles and cut beads or V-grooves

A skew can refine spindle profiles, form beads and V-grooves, and leave a smooth finish. Keep the blade supported on the rest and use careful, controlled cuts while learning; many beginners find the skew less forgiving than a gouge. Start with simple cuts and seek hands-on instruction before attempting advanced techniques.

5. Parting tool: establish a diameter or separate the work

A parting tool makes a narrow cut to set a diameter, create a detail, or separate a finished turning from its waste. A diamond-shaped cross-section can help reduce binding in the kerf; rectangular-section versions are also available. Keep the tool supported and avoid forcing it into a deep cut.

6. Round-nose scraper: smooth or solve a localized surface problem

A round-nose scraper can help with nonaggressive smoothing and work on bowls or platters. Treat it as a finishing or problem-solving tool, not as a substitute for sound cutting technique or the correct gouge. Use controlled contact and avoid taking an unnecessarily heavy cut.

How to begin a bevel-rubbing cut

  1. Set the tool on the rest first. Make sure it is supported before its edge reaches the rotating wood.
  2. Bring the bevel to the work. Let the bevel touch before raising or pivoting the handle to engage the edge.
  3. Use a light pass. Make small, controlled cuts rather than forcing the tool or trying to remove too much material at once.
  4. Adjust the rest for the tool and cut. Rest height and position vary; use the lathe manual and appropriate instruction rather than treating one example position as universal.

For roughing spindle stock, the Wood Magazine guide describes starting near the middle and working toward each end. Follow the lathe manufacturer’s instructions for your machine and tool, including the warning not to move the roughing gouge backward.

Set up safely before switching on

  • Mount the blank securely and position the tool rest close enough to support the tool while leaving working clearance.
  • With the lathe stopped, rotate the workpiece by hand to check that it clears the rest. Never adjust the rest while the lathe is running.
  • Use a full face shield; Woodcraft notes that it is commonly preferred over safety glasses for added protection from flying debris.
  • Keep the tool supported on the rest before bringing its edge into contact with the work, and use light cuts while learning.
  • Use the lathe’s manual and qualified hands-on instruction for setup and advanced procedures. Protective equipment does not make an insecure mounting or unsafe technique safe.

Choose tools around your projects, not a bundle label

Start by deciding whether your first projects are spindles, bowls and faceplate turnings, or a mix. Then match each tool to the work and cut you need. A spindle-focused buyer may not need a bowl gouge immediately; a bowl-focused buyer should prioritize tools designed for faceplate work rather than assuming a spindle set will cover it.

  • Match the tool to the work: spindle tools for work between centers; a bowl gouge for bowls and similar faceplate work.
  • Match the tool to the cut: roughing, profile shaping, smoothing, or parting call for different edges and techniques.
  • Choose a controllable size: Wood Magazine suggests that smaller tools can be easier for beginners to control than larger ones.
  • Check what a set actually contains: buying separate spindle and faceplate bundles can create duplicates while still leaving a needed tool out. Individual tools may better fit a focused project list.

A six-piece set is one documented option, but its contents are not a prescription for every turner. Buy for the work you intend to do and add tools as your projects require them.
