Natural-stone finish is not merely a decorative choice. It changes how a slab reflects light, feels under hand, behaves when wet, shows stains and etching, accepts an edge detail, and must be cleaned and sealed. The collection below organizes 50 commonly used names into practical finish families. It is an editorial comparison, not a universal industry standard: terminology and availability vary with the stone, equipment, abrasive sequence, brushing intensity and fabricator. Approve a sample of the actual stone before production.

How to read the 50-finish collection

Finish names overlap between suppliers. “Leathered,” for example, can describe several honed-and-brushed or otherwise textured results, while terms such as “cashmere,” “hydro-finished” and “micro-polished” may be a supplier’s own descriptor. Ask what process the fabricator will use, not only what the finish is called.

Sheen and texture also affect safety in different ways. A highly reflective surface is usually easiest to wipe, but scratches and etching stand out. A deeply textured surface can disguise minor marks yet hold soil and crumbs. Wet traction depends on water, contamination, slope, footwear, stone mineralogy, texture depth, installation and the test method; no finish name alone guarantees a slip rating.

Finish family Typical visual character Tactile and wet-use tendency Cleaning and sealing implications Common applications
Smooth and sheen-led From mirror gloss to matte or satin Smooth; polished surfaces can be slippery when wet Usually simplest to wipe; honed faces may be more open or absorbent and can show grease Worktops, vanities, walls, dry interior floors
Brushed and leathered Low sheen with visible relief Tactile texture; generally hides minor marks better than gloss Relief can trap crumbs and dirt; sealing and cleaning depend on porosity Kitchens, feature walls, hospitality interiors, some exterior surfaces
Thermal and blasted Non-reflective, granular or stippled More pronounced texture; often selected for exterior paving Heat or blasting can increase porosity and soil retention; establish a cleaning plan Patios, pool surrounds, steps, facades
Hammered and relieved Repeated pits, points, grooves or carved relief High tactile variation; drainage and footwear must be considered Most laborious to clean; sealing must suit the actual stone and depth Feature paving, walls, stairs, architectural details
Cut, natural and aged Visible saw marks, geological fracture or softened edges Ranges from relatively flat sawn faces to rugged split or riven faces Open fractures and aged treatments can hold soil; sample edges and corners Cladding, rustic floors, paving, fireplaces, garden walls

The 50 natural-stone finish choices

Availability depends on the stone species, slab or tile size, thickness, equipment and fabricator. Two suppliers may use the same label for noticeably different surface depths, so treat each description as a starting point for a physical sample.

Smooth and sheen-led finishes

  1. High-polish mirror: The finest polishing sequence creates maximum reflection, deeper-looking color and sharply defined veining. It suits dry walls, vanity tops and worktops where visual drama matters; wet floors and outdoor paving need another approach.
  2. Standard polished: A smooth, reflective production finish with less extreme mirror effect. It is common on interior countertops, vanities and wall panels, but scratches and etching remain conspicuous.
  3. Low-polish satin: Reduced gloss softens reflections while retaining a smooth face. It can be a compromise for interiors where a bright mirror finish feels too formal.
  4. Micro-polished: A very fine, low-to-moderate sheen produced by a controlled polishing sequence. Because the term is not universal, confirm the abrasive endpoint and sample under project lighting.
  5. Gloss-burnished: Heat and friction or a final burnishing stage produce a glossy, smooth appearance. Verify whether the process is appropriate for the stone’s minerals and whether later refinishing is available.
  6. Honed matte: Grinding stops before gloss, leaving a flat, non-reflective face. It softens color contrast and hides etch marks better than polished stone, but may absorb more readily.
  7. Honed satin: A slightly brighter version of matte honing that still reads as low sheen. It works where a calm surface is wanted without a chalky appearance.
  8. Velvet honed: A trade description for an exceptionally smooth, soft-looking matte surface. Request a sample because the degree of “velvet” varies with stone and abrasive sequence.
  9. Silk honed: A fine, smooth honing intended to feel silky rather than glossy. It can reduce visual glare while preserving a refined countertop or wall finish.
  10. Water-honed: Water-assisted honing creates a smooth matte-to-satin result and may be specified where a particular tactile feel is desired. Confirm process, porosity and maintenance instructions with the fabricator.

Brushed and leathered finishes

  1. Light brushed: Gentle abrasive brushing introduces shallow relief while keeping much of the stone’s original color. It adds touchable character without the maintenance burden of deep texture.
  2. Medium brushed: More visible linear or irregular relief gives a stronger tactile effect. It can disguise small marks but needs deliberate wiping across the grain.
  3. Heavy brushed: Deep brushing produces pronounced valleys and highlights. Use it only where the cleaning method, edge profile and debris collection are acceptable.
  4. Antique brushed: Brushing is combined with an aged visual treatment, often on edges or selected areas. Confirm which portions are intentionally softened and how replacement pieces will match.
  5. Leathered light: A lightly textured, low-sheen surface marketed under the broad “leathered” term. It often offers more grip and mark concealment than polished stone while remaining countertop-friendly.
  6. Leathered medium: Moderate relief makes veining and natural movement tactile. Crumbs and grease can settle in the texture, so specify a suitable cleaner and sealing schedule.
  7. Leathered deep: Strong relief creates a visibly rugged surface. It is better suited to selected counters, walls or architectural features than to areas requiring rapid, residue-free wiping.
  8. Satinato (honed and brushed): A combined honing-and-brushing treatment with low sheen and subtle relief. The exact balance between smooth and textured areas is supplier-dependent.
  9. Cashmere texture: A marketing or house term for a soft, luxurious tactile finish. Do not order from the name alone; approve a sample that shows sheen, grain direction and cleaning behavior.
  10. Brushed-and-polished edge contrast: The field is brushed while the edge is polished, creating a deliberate transition. Confirm that the edge can be fabricated consistently and that the contrast is intended on every exposed side.

Thermal and blasted finishes

  1. Flamed/thermal: High heat causes surface crystals to break or pop, leaving a rough, non-reflective and often porous face. It is associated with exterior paving, but the stone and project conditions determine performance.
  2. Light flamed: A restrained thermal treatment leaves less dramatic relief than a full flame. Ask how uniformly the heat is applied and whether color change is expected.
  3. Heavy flamed: More aggressive heating creates stronger crystal pop and texture. It can improve tactile bite but may increase soil retention and sealing demands.
  4. Flamed and brushed: Thermal texture is softened or refined by brushing. The combination can reduce sharpness while retaining exterior-oriented character; sample the finished face for barefoot areas.
  5. Sandblasted fine: Fine abrasive particles produce a uniformly matte, lightly granular surface. It offers more texture than honing without the deep pits of coarse blasting.
  6. Sandblasted medium: Medium blasting creates clearer grain and relief. Specify how the surface will be vacuumed, mopped and resealed before using it on large floors.
  7. Sandblasted coarse: Coarse blasting gives pronounced roughness and visual variation. It is generally a specialty exterior or feature treatment rather than a fast-cleaning worktop finish.
  8. Bead-blasted: Small beads create a controlled, stippled texture. Confirm bead material, depth and edge masking because these details affect appearance and cleanability.
  9. Shot-blasted: Shot impacts produce a more forceful textured face than fine bead blasting. Check for loose particles, edge chipping and compatibility with the selected stone.
  10. Water-blasted: High-pressure water exposes or opens the surface without the same abrasive terminology as sandblasting. The final roughness and porosity must be confirmed on the actual product.

Hammered and relieved finishes

  1. Bush-hammered fine: A fine-toothed tool creates closely spaced small pits. It adds visual movement and traction potential while remaining less rugged than medium or coarse bush-hammering.
  2. Bush-hammered medium: Medium tooling leaves clearly perceptible dimples and shadow. Plan for slower cleaning and test barefoot comfort where people will walk or sit.
  3. Bush-hammered coarse: Large, deep pits create a highly architectural texture. Use where dramatic relief is worth the extra soil retention and maintenance.
  4. Point-textured: Individual pointed impacts create an irregular field rather than a regular grid. The fabricator should document tool pattern and depth so repairs can be matched.
  5. Chiselled: Chisel work produces deliberate linear breaks, often around edges or on rustic faces. It can be visually strong but may create vulnerable corners if poorly supported.
  6. Picked: Repeated pick marks leave a rugged, hand-worked appearance. Confirm whether the treatment covers the whole face or only selected bands and borders.
  7. Waterjet-relieved: Controlled waterjet cutting creates recessed lines, motifs or fields. Recesses need a cleaning strategy and should be checked for drainage and sealant coverage.
  8. Hydro-finished: A supplier descriptor for a water-based texturing process or result. Because the label is not standardized, require process details, sample approval and maintenance instructions.
  9. Groove-cut: Purposeful parallel or patterned grooves are cut into the stone. Groove width, depth and spacing affect slip behavior, visual scale and how easily debris can be removed.
  10. Fluted/grooved: Repeated channels create a strong ribbed profile for walls, furniture fronts or architectural elements. Protect exposed ridges and specify how ends and returns are finished.

Cut, natural and aged finishes

  1. Diamond-sawn: The cutting process remains visible as a relatively flat, directional face. It gives a contemporary, honest fabrication look and can be honed or otherwise refined afterward.
  2. Gang-sawn: Multiple-blade sawing leaves parallel marks and a more linear appearance. Confirm blade spacing, mark depth and whether the supplier will fill or leave natural voids.
  3. Wire-sawn: Wire cutting produces a distinctive linear texture that can read softer than blade marks. Match pieces by batch because direction and tonal variation are prominent.
  4. Cross-cut sawn: Cutting across the stone’s dominant vein direction changes the visual movement and may reveal a more clouded pattern. Approve a slab sample to verify the intended orientation.
  5. Natural cleft: The stone is split along a geological plane, retaining natural undulation. It is common on slate and similar materials; thickness variation and edge behavior must be planned.
  6. Split-face: A deliberately fractured face exposes geological texture and irregular highlights. It is often used for cladding and walls rather than surfaces requiring a flat, wipeable plane.
  7. Riven: A naturally broken or cleft-like surface with pronounced variation in height and direction. Check projecting points, grout joints and furniture contact before specifying it indoors.
  8. Tumbled: Pieces are mechanically aged so edges soften and the face gains a weathered character. Tumbled edges change joint appearance and can increase grout exposure.
  9. Antiqued: A combination of distressing, edge softening and surface treatment creates an aged appearance. Define exactly which aging operations are included because suppliers use the term differently.
  10. Brushed-and-tumbled: Brushing adds surface relief while tumbling rounds and distresses edges. It suits rustic schemes, but the irregular perimeter requires careful layout and grout planning.

Polished, honed or leathered: the practical difference

Polished

Progressive grinding with increasingly fine abrasives produces a smooth, reflective face. Polishing usually deepens color and sharpens veins, making it effective on walls, vanity tops and worktops. The trade-off is visual sensitivity: scratches, dull spots and acid etching are easy to see. A wet polished surface can be slippery, so it is rarely the default for wet floors or pool surrounds.

Honed

Honing stops the grinding sequence before high gloss, yielding a flat matte-to-satin face. It softens contrast and generally disguises etch marks better than gloss. Depending on the stone, a honed surface may be more open or absorbent and can show grease, fingerprints or dark spills. Sealing and prompt cleanup matter on light-colored or porous stones.

Leathered and brushed

Brushing works abrasives across the face to create relief. “Leathered” is a broad trade term covering several brushed or honed-and-brushed outcomes. Texture can hide minor marks and add tactile depth, but crumbs, dust and grease may lodge in the relief. A leathered counter therefore needs a cleaning method that follows the texture rather than relying on one quick swipe.

Choosing by room and risk

Kitchen countertops and islands

Choose the sheen you can maintain under strong task lighting. Polished granite, marble or quartzite gives maximum color depth and a fast-wiping surface, but acids and scratches show readily. Honed or leathered options reduce glare and can disguise etches; test whether the actual stone darkens with oil or water. Deeply brushed or hammered faces are harder to wipe around food-preparation zones. Confirm the edge profile, sink cutout, cooktop opening and how the finish will be carried across exposed edges.

Vanities and interior walls

Polished and low-polish finishes are common where reflection and easy wipe-down are priorities. Honed, brushed or sawn surfaces can create a calmer feature wall, provided ledges and grout lines do not collect dust. In a bathroom, distinguish a wall finish from a floor finish: a surface acceptable vertically may be too slick under standing water.

Dry floors and stairs

Low-sheen honed, brushed, sawn or lightly textured finishes are generally easier to consider than mirror polish, but the installed slope, contamination and footwear still govern traction. For stairs, specify nosing geometry, edge visibility and any project-required slip test rather than relying on the finish name.

Patios, pool surrounds and other wet exteriors

Flamed, lightly flamed, brushed, sandblasted, bush-hammered and other textured finishes are often selected for exterior use because they provide a less reflective, more tactile surface. Roughness alone is not a guarantee of safety. Require the applicable project slip-test report for the actual stone and finish, and consider drainage, algae, freeze-thaw exposure, barefoot comfort and cleaning access.

Facades, fireplaces and feature cladding

Split-face, riven, natural cleft, sawn, waterjet-relieved and hammered finishes can emphasize geological character. Confirm anchoring, panel weight, edge returns, shadow lines and how replacement pieces will match. A porous or deeply relieved face may need a compatible breathable treatment rather than a film-forming product.

How stone type changes the decision

Marble

Marble’s calcite content is vulnerable to acid etching, which is more visually obvious on polished faces. Honed finishes can make etches less conspicuous, but they do not prevent them and may still absorb oils or colored liquids. Approve a sample with the cleaning products and foods expected in the room.

Granite

Granite varies in mineral composition, grain and porosity. Many granites take a high polish well, while some respond attractively to leathering, brushing or thermal treatment. Do not assume every granite can receive every process; confirm the fabricator’s equipment, edge result and sealing recommendation for the selected slab.

Quartzite

Quartzite can show dramatic veining and may be chosen polished, honed or leathered. The trade name does not by itself establish hardness or absorption, so verify the actual slab’s mineralogy and care requirements. Thermal or aggressive texturing should be approved on a sample before committing to a large order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limestone

Limestone is generally more porous and acid-sensitive than many granites. Honed, brushed, tumbled and antiqued finishes are common aesthetic choices, but open textures can increase staining and cleaning effort. Specify sealer type, reapplication interval and spill-response instructions in writing.

Sealing, cleaning and maintenance planning

Sealer chemistry must match the stone, porosity and finish. A product suitable for a polished interior counter may be inappropriate for a textured exterior or a breathable facade. Ask for the exact product data sheet, preparation method, cure time, expected service interval and instructions for removing cooking oils, soap residue, algae or de-icing contamination.

  • Test the cleaner and sealer on an offcut or hidden area before treating the installed surface.
  • Use soft tools on polished and honed faces; avoid abrasive pads unless the stone-care specification permits them.
  • For brushed, blasted, hammered and grooved finishes, use a brush or vacuum method that reaches recesses without eroding edges.
  • Record the installation date, stone batch, finish name, sealer and maintenance products for future repairs.
  • Address spills promptly, especially on light, honed or porous stones where darkening can develop before cleanup.

Questions to put in the fabricator’s quotation

  1. What exact finish name, process and abrasive or tool sequence will you use?
  2. Is the quoted finish available on this stone, slab size, thickness and edge profile?
  3. Can you provide a representative sample from the actual slab or batch, not a different stone?
  4. How will the finish continue over edges, sink cutouts, returns, miters and repaired areas?
  5. What changes in color, porosity, crystal pop or vein contrast should be expected?
  6. What cleaner and sealer are compatible, and who is responsible for initial sealing?
  7. For wet or exterior areas, what test method and report apply to this actual stone and finish?
  8. What are the cleaning intervals, resealing conditions and likely lead time for replacement pieces?

A six-step selection workflow

  1. Define the use zone. Identify whether the surface is a countertop, vanity, wall, dry floor, wet floor, stair, patio, pool surround, driveway or facade.
  2. Shortlist by sheen and texture. Remove finishes whose reflection, roughness or cleaning burden conflicts with the zone.
  3. Check the stone itself. Review hardness, porosity, mineralogy and known response to polishing, heat, brushing, blasting or cutting.
  4. Clarify the terminology. Have the fabricator describe the named finish and process in the quotation; labels are not universal.
  5. Approve a representative sample. View the actual stone or batch in the intended daylight and artificial lighting, and test likely spills and cleaners.
  6. Write down performance and logistics. Confirm cleaning, sealing, edge, slip-test and installation requirements, then recheck size, thickness, availability and lead time before release.

Bottom-line decision rules

  • Choose polished when reflection, color depth and fast wipe-down outweigh the visibility of scratches and etching.
  • Choose honed when you want a quieter look and less conspicuous etching, while accepting possible absorbency and fingerprint visibility.
  • Choose leathered or brushed when tactile character and mark concealment matter, provided you can clean the relief thoroughly.
  • Choose flamed, blasted, hammered or other textured finishes for a specific traction and visual requirement, then verify the installed system with the applicable test.
  • Choose sawn, cleft, split-face, riven or tumbled treatments when the cutting or geological character is the design feature, and plan edges, joints and maintenance around the irregularity.
