5 Refrigerator Brands to Avoid? What Consumer Reports’ 2026 Data Actually Says

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 findings do not support a definitive list of five refrigerator brands to avoid “at all costs.” Reliability varies by refrigerator style, and the available results point to specific concerns—not a blanket verdict on every model from a brand. CR flags poor ratings for Samsung French-door refrigerators and compressor concerns in some LG and Kenmore styles. For a purchase decision, compare the exact model and refrigerator type rather than relying on a brand-wide blacklist.

Why there is no reliable five-brand blacklist

Consumer Reports evaluates refrigerator reliability by style, including top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French-door, side-by-side, and built-in models. Its current brand-score analysis also says there is not one best brand across all styles. Breann Chai, who oversees refrigerator testing for CR, put it this way: “There isn’t one best brand of refrigerator because brands tend to focus on particular segments or styles or prices of the market.”

That distinction matters: a concern about a particular style or component does not establish that every refrigerator from the same manufacturer is a poor choice. The accessible 2026 findings do not substantiate five brands consumers should avoid across the board.

What Consumer Reports flags by brand and style

Samsung: French-door refrigerators

CR reports poor predicted reliability and owner satisfaction ratings for Samsung French-door refrigerators. This finding is specific to that style; it does not establish the same ratings for every Samsung refrigerator type or model.

LG: compressor concerns in three styles

CR says its survey results show LG French-door, side-by-side, and bottom-freezer models are more likely to have compressor problems than models from most other brands. That is a reported category-level concern, not a prediction that a particular LG refrigerator will fail.

How common are refrigerator problems?

In its September 22, 2026 reliability article, CR estimated that 30 percent of new refrigerators with icemakers would have a problem by the end of the fifth year of ownership. The estimate is based on three annual member surveys covering 85,290 refrigerators with icemakers bought new from 2016 through 2026. It is a prediction for the surveyed category, not a guarantee about an individual appliance.

Icemakers and water or ice dispensers were the most commonly reported trouble spots. Members reported major failures—such as a broken compressor or a refrigerator unable to maintain cool temperatures—less often.

CR’s testing page separately says nearly one-third (31 percent) of all refrigerators in the cited member surveys required repairs by the end of their fifth year. That statement uses different wording and a different population description from the 30 percent estimate for refrigerators with icemakers; the two figures should not be treated as interchangeable.

How to compare refrigerators before buying

Use brand-level reliability as a starting point, then evaluate the refrigerator type and specific model. Consumer Reports’ brand scores draw on lab and survey data and price, but scores reflect a lineup and do not replace checking an individual refrigerator’s performance, dimensions, features, and cost. CR currently scores French-door, side-by-side, and top-freezer brands; it says there is not enough current testing data to score bottom-freezer or built-in brands in that analysis.

  • Match the style to your needs. Reliability results vary by refrigerator type, so compare models within the style you plan to buy.
  • Check model-level results. Look for the specific unit’s lab performance and predicted reliability where available, not just its manufacturer’s name.
  • Measure the installation space. Confirm the refrigerator’s dimensions and that doors, drawers, and delivery access will work in your kitchen.
  • Weigh features against complexity. Since icemakers and dispensers are common reported trouble spots, decide whether those features are worth having in your household.
  • Compare price with performance. A brand score incorporates price, but your decision should account for the price and features of the exact models you are considering.

CR’s brand-score explanation describes its style-specific analysis. Its 2026 kitchen-brand announcement also discusses brand comparisons based on testing and survey data.
