Yes: common purslane, dandelion, lamb’s quarters, blackberry, and muscadine are all listed as having edible leaves in Mississippi State University Extension’s guide to wild edible plants. That does not make every similar-looking plant safe, or every part of these plants edible. Identify the species and edible part with certainty, check any harvest-stage or preparation limits, and avoid plants from contaminated or treated areas.
Five plants whose leaves are listed as edible
The examples below come from Mississippi State University Extension’s Forgotten Foods: Introduction to Wild Edible Plants. Its table records edible parts and uses, but it is not a field-identification guide. The list also reflects a Mississippi Extension source; local plant availability and guidance can differ by region.

| Plant | Edible part and uses listed | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Common purslane (Portulaca oleracea) | Leaves and stems; salads, greens, pickles, and bread. | UF/IFAS describes the leaves and stems as mildly tangy or lemony. Not all Portulaca species are edible; positively identify the species and use plants from pesticide-free sites. |
| Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) | Leaves; salads, greens, fritters, and teas. | The Extension table marks these leaves for young, tender growth. The listed uses do not identify the plant for you. |
| Lamb’s quarters (Chenopodium album) | Leaves; salads, greens, and cooking. | The Extension table limits the leaves to young, tender growth. |
| Blackberry (Rubus spp.) | Leaves and fruits are listed. The table names fresh use, pies, jams, jellies, and drinks. | The source does not clearly assign those uses to leaves versus fruit; do not treat the fruit preparations as leaf recipes. |
| Muscadine (Vitis rotundifolia) | Fruit and leaves are listed. The table names jams, jellies, and drinks. | The source does not specify which uses apply to leaves, so it does not establish a leaf-specific recipe. |
For purslane, UF/IFAS describes a low-growing, spreading plant with stems that root at nodes, thick succulent leaves and stems, and small yellow flowers in leaf axils. These are characteristics to consider together—not a single-trait test for deciding whether a plant is safe. Read the full UF/IFAS purslane guide and confirm the species with reliable regional references.
How can you tell whether a leaf is safe to eat?
You cannot establish safety from a general list or a resemblance alone. Mississippi State University Extension advises being 100 percent certain of identification, consulting at least three plant-resource guides, learning which parts are edible and how they must be prepared, and watching for poisonous lookalikes. It specifically warns that common purslane can grow near poisonous prostrate spurge. UF/IFAS likewise cautions that some plants have only one edible portion and that other parts may be extremely toxic.

- Confirm the species. Use multiple dependable references that cover your region, and consult a county Extension expert if identification is uncertain.
- Confirm the part and harvest stage. A plant’s leaves being listed as edible does not mean its roots, fruit, stems, or every stage of growth are safe. The Extension table marks some leaves and stems for young, tender growth.
- Check preparation requirements. Do not assume a leaf is safe raw or that ordinary cooking is enough. If reliable local guidance does not specify safe preparation, do not eat it.
- Check the site. Avoid plants from places that may have herbicide or pesticide exposure, heavy-metal contamination, or industrial runoff.
- Respect access and harvest limits. Rules vary by land, and Extension advises harvesting sustainably.
UF/IFAS notes that poison ivy typically has three leaflets and Virginia creeper five, while also cautioning that leaf forms vary. That comparison can prompt careful checking, but it is not a stand-alone identification test. Mississippi State University Extension’s advice is apt: “When in doubt, leave it out!”
Why some familiar wild greens need extra caution
Pokeweed is not a beginner green. Mississippi State Extension says its leaves and stalks should be collected only when young in spring and boiled in at least three changes of water; roots and berries are highly toxic. UC Statewide IPM warns that all parts are poisonous and that eating pokeweed raw or after improper preparation can be fatal. Because these sources underscore the risk and preparation sensitivity, do not improvise a method from a short article; follow authoritative local guidance or avoid it.

Nettles also require specific handling. UF/IFAS says boiling breaks down stinging compounds and notes that Urtica greens are used like spinach, but that information alone is not a complete harvesting or cooking protocol. Do not use it as one.

Use regional guidance before harvesting
Mississippi State University Extension recommends detailed plant guides with descriptions, photographs, habitat information, and food uses. A regional guide can help narrow an identification, but it does not replace positive confirmation of the plant in front of you or local advice about safe harvest and preparation.
