There is no universally best data-center cooling method. Conventional room air cooling suits ordinary-density equipment; close-coupled cooling targets isolated high-density racks; and direct liquid cooling is designed for AI, HPC, and very high-density workloads. Economizers can reduce compressor energy when climate and equipment ratings permit, while chilled-water and DX systems often provide the mechanical plant behind several of these approaches.

There is no single best data-center cooling method. Conventional room air cooling is usually the most compatible and simplest option for ordinary-density, mixed equipment. Close-coupled cooling is often the practical answer for isolated high-density racks. Direct liquid cooling is the strongest fit for AI, HPC, and very high-density workloads. Economizers can reduce mechanical cooling energy when the climate and equipment ratings allow it, while chilled-water and DX systems commonly provide the mechanical plant behind several of these approaches.

For a construction or retrofit project, the decision should be based on more than the cooling unit’s efficiency. Rack power, future expansion, water availability, heat-rejection equipment, floor loading, piping, controls, maintenance access, equipment compatibility, and failure procedures all affect the result.

At a glance: the five methods

Method Where heat is removed Typical density fit Main advantage Main constraint
Room-based air cooling Room air, moved by server and room fans Low to moderate Broad equipment compatibility Airflow and fan requirements increase as rack density rises
Chilled-water or DX cooling Room air, supported by a refrigeration plant Moderate Centralized, predictable temperature control Compressors, pumps, heat exchangers, towers, controls, and maintenance add complexity
Economizer or free cooling Outdoor air or an ambient-assisted heat exchanger Depends on the paired cooling method Reduces compressor operation during favorable conditions Climate, humidity, contamination, water treatment, and equipment ratings limit operation
Close-coupled rack or row cooling Near the rack, row, or rack exhaust Moderate to high in targeted zones Supports dense racks without redesigning the entire room Requires localized piping, controls, doors, couplings, or CDUs
Direct liquid cooling At the component, server, or immersion tank High to very high Handles dense AI and HPC loads more effectively than air Requires liquid-compatible IT, facility loops, monitoring, leak management, and specialized service

This is a functional comparison, not a universal performance ranking. Most modern facilities combine methods rather than selecting only one.

1. Conventional room-based air cooling

How it works

Server fans pull air through the equipment from the cool-air side and discharge heated air into the room’s return-air path. CRAC units, CRAH units, or other air-handling equipment then remove heat from the room air.

The building layout is as important as the cooling equipment. Front-to-rear rack orientation, cold aisles, hot aisles, blanking panels, cable management, and sealed openings help prevent supply air from mixing prematurely with hot return air. Uncontrolled hot- and cold-aisle mixing wastes cooling capacity and can create localized hotspots even when the average room temperature appears acceptable.

Advantages

  • Works with a wide range of conventional servers, storage systems, and networking equipment.
  • Uses a familiar maintenance and service model.
  • Is straightforward for moderate rack densities when the room has adequate airflow capacity.
  • Can be improved with containment, variable-speed fans, temperature sensors, blanking panels, and automated cooling controls.

Limitations

Air has relatively low heat capacity per unit volume. As rack power rises, the facility must move more air, move it faster, reduce bypass airflow, or supplement room cooling with a more localized method. Simply installing larger room units may not solve a problem caused by poor rack layout or recirculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: mixed enterprise rooms, legacy equipment, ordinary-density racks, and projects where compatibility and service simplicity are more important than maximum rack density.

2. Mechanical chilled-water or direct-expansion cooling

How it works

Mechanical cooling conditions the room air through either direct expansion (DX) equipment or a chilled-water system. In a typical chilled-water arrangement, CRAH coils remove heat from room air and transfer it to chilled water. The water returns to chillers, where the heat is transferred again—often to condenser water—and ultimately rejected through cooling towers, dry coolers, or another heat-rejection system.

This distinction matters: chilled-water and DX cooling are often the mechanical plant supporting room-air cooling, not completely separate IT-side cooling methods. A data hall can use conventional air cooling supplied by a chilled-water plant, a DX plant, or a combination of plant types.

Advantages

  • Provides mature and predictable temperature control.
  • Can serve multiple rooms or zones from a centralized plant.
  • Can be integrated with cooling towers, dry coolers, thermal storage, heat exchangers, and economizers.
  • Supports established redundancy and maintenance strategies in large facilities.

Limitations and construction implications

The plant adds compressors, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, controls, water treatment, and heat-rejection equipment. Each item introduces installation, commissioning, maintenance, and failure-mode considerations. A tower-based plant can consume significant water through evaporation and blowdown. A dry-cooling arrangement can reduce water use but may require more equipment, larger heat-rejection surfaces, or additional energy in some conditions.

  • Compact design mounts to any 19" inch cabinet and takes up only 1 unit of space
  • Simple and easy to use LCD display allows user to control temperature
  • Air pumped through to the top exhaust system of the fan

Large chilled-water systems also require careful coordination of pipe routing, insulation, drainage, access, vibration control, equipment pads, structural loads, electrical service, and controls integration. These requirements should be resolved during design rather than treated as late-stage mechanical-room details.

Best fit: large, established facilities that need centralized cooling and tightly controlled conditions while retaining an air-based IT environment.

3. Economizer or free cooling

How it works

Economization reduces or bypasses compressor work when outdoor conditions are favorable. An air-side economizer introduces suitable outdoor air or uses an air-to-air heat exchanger. An indirect air-side economizer keeps indoor and outdoor air separate while transferring heat through a heat exchanger. A water-side economizer uses cool outdoor conditions and a heat exchanger to provide chilled-water cooling with reduced or bypassed chiller operation.

Advantages

  • Can significantly reduce compressor energy during cool outdoor conditions.
  • Can be paired with air-cooled or liquid-cooled IT systems.
  • Can reduce operating cost and improve efficiency without changing the IT load.
  • Warmer liquid-cooling loops can increase the number of hours when ambient-assisted cooling is practical.

Limitations

Free cooling is climate- and design-dependent. Air-side systems must address humidity, particulates, smoke, corrosive contaminants, filtration, and the environmental limits of the IT equipment. Water-side systems require heat exchangers, water treatment, sensors, control sequences, and protection against freezing or unsuitable temperatures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Economizers also do not necessarily eliminate mechanical cooling. Most critical facilities need a mechanical backup for hot weather, poor outdoor-air quality, abnormal humidity, maintenance, or a control-system failure. The design should specify exactly when the economizer is enabled, when it is disabled, and how the transition occurs without destabilizing supply temperature or humidity.

Equipment specified for a wider allowable environmental envelope can reduce compressor-based cooling in many locations, but the manufacturer’s rated operating limits must be respected. “Free cooling” is therefore best treated as a source-efficiency strategy that works alongside another cooling method, not as a standalone answer.

Best fit: facilities with many suitable outdoor hours, robust environmental controls, and IT equipment rated for the intended operating range.

4. Close-coupled rack or row cooling

How it works

Close-coupled cooling places heat removal near the source instead of relying entirely on room-wide airflow. Examples include in-row coolers, rack-level heat exchangers, and passive or active rear-door heat exchangers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A rear-door heat exchanger captures hot exhaust air as it leaves the rack and transfers that heat to a liquid loop. The room receives less hot-air discharge, reducing the volume of heat that must be transported through the data hall. In-row units perform a similar function beside or between racks.

Advantages

  • Targets high-density racks without requiring every rack to be converted.
  • Reduces the distance and amount of hot air managed by the room system.
  • Works well in hybrid rooms where ordinary racks remain air-cooled.
  • Can provide an incremental path for expansion or retrofit projects.

Testing of passive rear-door heat exchangers has shown that their energy performance depends on the configuration, including whether a cooling distribution unit (CDU) is used, which heat-transfer fluid is selected, and how server heat load compares with cooling capacity. The equipment should therefore be evaluated as part of a complete rack and facility loop rather than by nameplate capacity alone.

Limitations and retrofit checks

  • Rack-specific piping, hoses, quick couplings, doors, controls, or CDUs may be required.
  • Rack geometry, door swing, service clearances, cable pathways, and equipment weight must be checked.
  • Leak detection, water quality, fluid compatibility, isolation valves, and maintenance procedures become part of the rack design.
  • Localized cooling does not remove the need for facility-level heat rejection, redundancy, or adequate room conditions.

Best fit: dense racks in an otherwise air-cooled room, especially where a phased retrofit is more realistic than a full liquid-cooling conversion.

5. Direct liquid cooling: cold plates and immersion

Cold-plate or direct-to-chip cooling

Cold-plate systems circulate liquid through plates attached to high-power components such as CPUs, GPUs, and accelerators. Heat moves directly from the component into the liquid rather than first being transferred to the entire room air stream.

Most cold-plate deployments remain hybrid. High-power components may be liquid-cooled while memory, power supplies, storage devices, and other lower-power parts still rely on server fans and room air. That means the facility must design for both liquid heat removal and the residual air load.

Immersion cooling

In immersion cooling, IT equipment is placed in a dielectric fluid. In single-phase systems, the fluid remains liquid and is circulated through a heat exchanger. In two-phase systems, the fluid boils at the equipment, the vapor rises and condenses, and the liquid returns to the tank.

Advantages

  • Provides substantially greater heat-transfer capability for dense compute than room air alone.
  • Is particularly suitable for HPC, AI, and other high-power rack designs.
  • Can support warmer facility-water temperatures, improving economizer opportunities.
  • May reduce server-fan energy and can support heat reuse when return temperatures and building demand make it practical.

Limitations

Direct liquid cooling is an infrastructure project, not a plug-in accessory. The design may require compatible servers, cold plates or tanks, CDUs, pumps, facility-water loops, heat exchangers, sensors, controls, leak detection, fluid management, and specialized commissioning.

Condensation prevention is essential when liquid temperatures could fall below the room dew point. Designers must also address coolant chemistry, material compatibility, filtration, connection reliability, isolation, spill response, component replacement, and safe service procedures. Immersion changes how technicians access and handle equipment; cold plates preserve a more familiar server format but still introduce liquid connections and service constraints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direct liquid cooling is not automatically more reliable or cheaper. Its value is strongest when air cooling would require excessive airflow, fan power, room redesign, or an impractical rack-density limit.

Best fit: new HPC and AI facilities, very high-density deployments, and operators prepared to manage liquid infrastructure and specialized maintenance.

How to choose the right approach

  1. Calculate current and future rack density. Record actual and projected kW per rack, peak rather than average demand, and the number of high-density cabinets. A room average can hide a small number of racks that exceed the air system’s practical limit.
  2. Separate the IT-side method from the cooling plant. Decide whether heat is removed from room air, rack exhaust, components, or immersion fluid. Then select DX, chilled water, dry cooling, towers, or another heat-rejection arrangement to support it.
  3. Confirm equipment compatibility. Check airflow direction, manufacturer temperature and humidity limits, liquid-ready server configurations, dielectric-fluid compatibility, service clearances, warranties, and the residual air load from components that remain air-cooled.
  4. Model the local climate. Evaluate outdoor temperature, humidity, smoke, dust, corrosive contaminants, freeze conditions, and the number of hours when an economizer can operate. Confirm the intended IT environmental class rather than assuming warmer operation is acceptable.
  5. Compare water and energy trade-offs. Consider tower evaporation and blowdown, treatment, wastewater, dry-cooler energy, pump power, fan power, compressor energy, and the possibility of heat reuse. Reducing water use may increase electrical demand, and reducing compressor work may increase filtration or controls requirements.
  6. Design for failure and maintenance. Define redundant pumps, chillers, CDUs, controls, isolation valves, bypasses, leak detection, emergency cooling, and safe service sequences. A cooling method is only suitable for a critical facility if technicians can inspect, isolate, repair, and restart it without creating an unacceptable thermal event.
  7. Check the building work. Include structural loads, equipment pads, plant-room space, pipe routes, drainage, floor penetrations, electrical capacity, generator and UPS implications, fire protection coordination, access paths, and construction phasing.
  8. Measure more than efficiency. PUE—total facility energy divided by IT-equipment energy—is useful for facility energy efficiency. WUE helps assess water consumption. Neither metric replaces reliability analysis, maintainability review, capacity planning, or lifecycle cost analysis.

Which method should you use?

For an existing mixed-density data hall: start with airflow management. Correct rack orientation, install blanking panels, seal bypass openings, improve containment, verify sensors, and tune variable-speed controls before adding major mechanical capacity. Then use close-coupled cooling for racks that exceed the room’s practical air-cooling limit.

For a large centralized facility: chilled water or DX may provide the mechanical backbone, with economization and localized cooling layered into the design. The choice between tower-based and dry heat rejection should reflect local water policy, climate, energy pricing, and resilience requirements.

For AI or HPC: evaluate direct-to-chip cold plates or immersion early. Waiting until construction is complete can make liquid cooling much more expensive because piping, CDUs, structural work, electrical systems, controls, and service areas may all need modification.

For phased growth: a hybrid design is often the least disruptive. Keep ordinary racks on room air, use rear-door or in-row cooling for concentrated loads, and reserve direct liquid cooling for the highest-density equipment.

Bottom line

Room-based air cooling remains the sensible default for compatible, moderate-density equipment. Chilled-water and DX systems are established mechanical plants that can support room cooling and other strategies. Economizers reduce compressor work when climate and equipment ratings permit. Close-coupled cooling is an effective bridge for localized high-density racks. Direct liquid cooling is the strongest option when AI, HPC, or future rack power exceeds practical air-cooling limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most resilient design is often a combination: optimized air cooling for ordinary racks, close-coupled heat removal for dense zones, economization wherever dependable, and direct liquid cooling where the compute load demands it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which data-center cooling method is best for ordinary enterprise racks?

Room-based air cooling is usually best for mixed enterprise rooms, legacy equipment, and moderate rack densities because it offers broad compatibility and a familiar maintenance model. It may need containment, better controls, or supplemental close-coupled cooling as rack power increases.

Is liquid cooling better for AI and HPC data centers?

Direct liquid cooling is generally the strongest fit for AI, HPC, and very high-density racks because liquid transfers heat more effectively near the components. It requires compatible hardware, facility loops, CDUs, controls, leak management, and specialized service procedures.

Are chilled-water and DX cooling separate from air cooling?

No. Chilled-water and DX systems commonly provide the mechanical plant that cools room air. A facility can combine that plant with conventional air cooling, economizers, rear-door heat exchangers, or direct liquid cooling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best cooling option for a few high-density racks in an existing room?

Close-coupled cooling places heat removal near the rack or row. Rear-door heat exchangers and in-row coolers can support dense racks while the rest of the room remains air-cooled, making them useful for phased retrofits.

What should be measured when comparing data-center cooling systems?

PUE measures total facility energy divided by IT-equipment energy, while WUE addresses water consumption. Both are useful indicators, but neither measures reliability, maintainability, capacity margin, or total lifecycle cost by itself.

The Bottom Line

Choose by rack density and project constraints, not by cooling technology alone. Optimize room airflow first, use close-coupled cooling for localized density, apply economization when climate and equipment ratings support it, and specify direct liquid cooling for genuinely high-density AI or HPC loads. Chilled-water or DX equipment may serve as the mechanical backbone behind several of these approaches.
