There is no single best fertilizer for every potato bed. Choose a formulation and rate from a soil test and your local extension guidance; 5-10-10 and 10-10-10 are common examples, not proven winners in a head-to-head product trial. These five options compare useful fertilizer types and use cases—not five tested brands.
How to choose fertilizer for potatoes
Start with a soil test. It indicates whether fertilizer is needed and which nutrients the soil lacks; follow its recommendations rather than applying a familiar formula automatically. Maine Extension explains the role of nitrogen in potatoes and the limits of applying a commercial-crop figure to a garden in Nitrogen: An Essential Element for Potatoes. Home-garden guidance from Iowa State Extension and Maine Extension also emphasizes testing.

On a fertilizer label, N-P-K gives the percentages of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P₂O₅), and potash (K₂O). For example, 10-10-10 is a balanced analysis, not a special potato formula. What fertilizer is best for potatoes depends on which nutrients the test says are needed, as well as local soil and growing conditions.
Five fertilizer types and when they fit
1. A soil-test-directed fertilizer
This is the best starting choice because it matches the bed’s actual nutrient needs. Select a fertilizer whose analysis supplies the nutrients recommended by your soil test, then use the rate and timing specified by your local extension service. Recommendations can differ because soils, climates, and production practices differ.

- Supports Root Development & Yield – Helps encourage strong roots and productive harvests.
- Balanced Nutrition for Garden Crops – Provides nutrients suited for steady growth and tuber development.
- Ideal for Garden Beds & Rows – Suitable for backyard gardens, raised beds, and field planting.

2. 5-10-10 as a preplant example
Virginia Tech Extension’s home-garden guidance recommends, when no soil test is available, 2½ pounds of 5-10-10 per 50-foot row before planting. It then describes one or two later sidedressings of 1 pound of 10-10-10 per 50-foot row, after tubers begin forming. This is a Virginia example, not a universal rate; see Virginia Tech’s potato, pepper, and eggplant guidance (revised February 2026).
3. 10-10-10 as a balanced garden fertilizer
When a soil test is unavailable, extension services offer different fallback examples. Iowa State says 1 to 2 pounds of 10-10-10 per 100 square feet should be adequate for most home gardens. Maine gives a separate home-garden example of about 30 pounds of 10-10-10 per 1,000 square feet, or roughly one pound per 10 feet of row. These rates are not interchangeable; use the recommendation for your location and bed, and see Iowa State’s home-garden potato guide and Maine’s Potato Facts.

4. Region-specific nitrogen-and-potassium blends
Some local recommendations focus on particular nutrients rather than a balanced N-P-K blend. Under Florida conditions, UF/IFAS describes a split nitrogen-and-potassium program and gives an example equivalent to 7.5 pounds of 10-0-10 per application: 0.75 pound of nitrogen and 0.5 pound of potassium per 100 feet of row at planting, with the remainder applied 3–4 weeks after planting. This is Florida-specific guidance, not a general-purpose rate for other soils or climates. Consult UF/IFAS’s Florida home-garden potato guidance for the full program.

5. Compost and other organic amendments
Compost is an organic option named alongside manufactured fertilizer analyses in University of Idaho Extension’s home-garden guidance. Its nutrient contribution should be considered in light of soil-test results and any other amendments already added; do not assume that an organic source eliminates the need to account for nutrients. Idaho also describes splitting fertilizer applications, with some applied before planting and some later. See University of Idaho’s Potato Production in the Home Garden.

Apply fertilizer carefully
- Keep it off seed pieces. Do not let fertilizer touch potato seed pieces directly. Alaska Extension specifies that fertilizer bands should be at least two inches from the seed piece; follow the placement instructions from your own local guidance. See Alaska Extension’s potato fertilizer recommendations.
- Use the recommended timing. Some guidance calls for preplant fertilizer and a later sidedress, but timing and quantities vary by region and formulation. Follow one local program rather than combining rates from different states.
- Avoid overapplication. Maine Extension cautions that over-fertilized potatoes can make abundant foliage while producing tubers that do not keep well. Iowa State warns that large manure additions can increase potato scab occurrence. More fertilizer is not automatically better.
Why rates from different regions should not be combined
Extension rates are tied to local soils and growing conditions. Virginia’s row-based 5-10-10 and 10-10-10 schedule, Iowa’s area-based 10-10-10 example, Maine’s separate home-garden rate, and Florida’s split nitrogen-and-potassium program are distinct recommendations—not pieces of one universal recipe. California guidance likewise describes local preplant and nitrogen-sidedress practices, with mixed fertilizer examples including 5-10-10 and 12-12-12; see UC IPM’s potato growing tips.
Commercial production figures should not be used to calculate a home-garden application. Maine’s estimate of around 200 pounds of nitrogen refers to a commercial crop producing 300 hundredweight of tubers and associated vines, not a backyard bed. For field production, recommendations are crop- and soil-test-specific; consult the South Dakota State University 2026 Fertilizer Recommendations Guide and Virginia Tech’s field-crop potato recommendations rather than adapting home-garden examples.

- HIGH P AND K 8-16-16 FORMULA — 16% phosphorus and 16% potassium — double the nitrogen — feed root and tuber development directly for larger, more uniform potatoes with better storage quality
- MADE FOR POTATOES — The 1-2-2 tuber ratio keeps the leafy canopy in proportion while sending the feeding underground where the harvest forms; suitable for all potato varieties from seed
- THREE-STAGE SCHEDULE — Mix 2 to 3 lbs per 100 sq ft into the top 6 inches at planting, then side-dress 1 to 2 lbs per 100 sq ft along the rows after emergence and again at midseason as tubers form
- CONTAINERS AND GROW BAGS — Add 1 tablespoon per gallon of soil when planting and reapply every 4 to 6 weeks during the season; a 5 lb bag covers approximately 160 container plantings
- MEASURED RATES MATTER — At 40% total analysis this is a concentrated feed: apply evenly along rows, avoid direct contact with plants, and water thoroughly after every application
