Yes, you can adapt a conventional hot-glue gun to extrude PLA—but it is not a drop-in conversion. You need a sufficiently hot gun, a solid PLA stick that matches its feed path, and usually a notched surface so the drive mechanism can grip it. In a reported experiment, an approximately 80 W gun advertised at 208°C successfully extruded custom PLA sticks about 11 mm in diameter and 150 mm long, while a roughly 150°C craft gun produced only soft, putty-like PLA. The original experiment is a useful proof of concept, not a universal specification.
What this solves
Large FDM prints are often divided into printer-sized sections. Their curved or thin-walled pieces can be difficult to clamp, and a simple butt joint may be weak. Conventional hot glue is convenient for tacking, but it remains relatively flexible. A PLA bead applied to the hidden side of a seam can provide a harder, material-compatible reinforcement.

This method is most useful for decorative models and large assemblies where the bead can remain on the interior. It is less suitable for exposed cosmetic seams, precision repairs, flexible joints, or safety-critical structures.

Not reliably. The successful test used a high-temperature gun advertised at approximately 208°C. A lower-temperature gun, estimated at about 150°C, softened PLA without producing a useful flowing extrusion. Commercial glue guns vary widely: manufacturer listings cover approximately 140–230°C, with some full-size models offering adjustable settings. See the ranges from Novus and Powerhold.

These figures are guides, not guarantees. A published maximum may describe the heater or internal temperature rather than the temperature delivered uniformly at the melt chamber and nozzle. PLA formulations, pigments, additives, and moisture content also affect flow. Start with the lowest setting that produces a steady bead; more heat is not always better. Overheating can discolor or degrade PLA, create unpleasant fumes, and damage the tool.
Why loose 1.75 mm filament does not work well
A glue gun is designed for one solid cylindrical cartridge. Loose filament cannot reliably act as the plunger behind the melt chamber. A bundle may leave gaps, slip under the feed lever, or allow molten PLA to flow backward around it. A full-size stick fills the feed path and maintains pressure behind the softened material.
The PLA stick: dimensions and design
The reported setup used a PLA stick approximately:
- Diameter: 11 mm
- Length: at least 5 inches (about 127 mm); the test print was about 150 mm
- Infill: approximately 75%
These are historical test dimensions, not a universal standard. Many full-size guns accept sticks around 11–11.5 mm, while mini guns use smaller sticks. Measure an original glue stick or follow the gun’s manual. A stick that is slightly too large can jam; one that is too small can leak backward.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse a straight cylinder with high infill and multiple walls so it behaves as a solid pusher. Smooth PLA may slide past the feed teeth, so the successful design added repeated angled notches along the stick. The notch depth and spacing must match the particular gun’s lever travel. Do not assume a design made for one model will fit another.

How to print and fit the stick
- Measure the diameter of a compatible commercial stick with calipers.
- Model a cylinder to that measurement and make it long enough to remain engaged by the feed mechanism.
- Add high infill and multiple walls. Use a consistent, straight profile.
- Add angled notches where the drive arm contacts the stick. If the spacing is unknown, print a short sacrificial section first.
- Print a test piece and inspect it for bulges, voids, taper, layer separation, or a rough surface that could bind.
- With the gun unplugged and cool, check that the stick slides into the rear guide without force.
The supported test parameters are PLA, approximately 11 mm diameter, approximately 150 mm length, and approximately 75% infill. No particular nozzle temperature, layer height, wall count, speed, or infill pattern was established by that experiment; choose those settings according to your printer and filament, then measure the finished part.
Operating procedure
Before printing and loading
- Confirm whether the gun takes mini or full-size sticks.
- Check its temperature range and electrical rating.
- Use a high-temperature or adjustable-temperature model if possible.
- Use an inexpensive or expendable gun for the first trial; PLA can cause backflow, clogging, or feed wear.
Prepare the tool
- Unplug the gun and let it cool.
- Remove accessible old glue residue and inspect the inlet and nozzle.
- Place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface with the nozzle clear of cables and flammable materials.
- Keep skin away from both the nozzle and the molten bead. General handling guidance is available from Dremel.
Heat and test
- Load the correctly sized PLA stick.
- Allow extra warm-up time. The reported setup took approximately 10–15 minutes in a cool workshop, compared with about five minutes or less for ordinary glue.
- Begin at the lowest temperature that should produce flow and wait until the melt chamber is fully heated.
- Pull the trigger gently and watch the inlet for backward leakage.
- Stop if the trigger becomes unusually hard, the stick will not advance, the gun smokes, or the PLA becomes badly discolored or acrid-smelling.
Never force the trigger through a jam. Do not pull out a partially melted stick while the gun is hot; hot material can spill and cause burns. Disconnect power and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning procedure after the tool has cooled.

Joining PLA parts
For a hidden seam
- Dry-fit and align the parts before heating the gun.
- Apply small tacks at several points to hold the alignment.
- Run a continuous bead along the hidden side of the seam.
- Keep the parts restrained while the bead cools.
- Add a reinforcing rib, cross-brace, or backing plate where the geometry allows.
A bead is generally easier to control than a large blob. A blob under a part can provide a strong attachment, but it is bulky and transfers more heat to a concentrated area. Do not expect molten PLA to spread into a thin, neat cosmetic layer; it can begin cooling before it levels.

Is this really plastic welding?
Usually, that is too strong a description. The reported cutaway inspection found limited, superficial melting at the joined surfaces. The extruded PLA also flowed into surface irregularities, creating mechanical interlocking. The result is better described as PLA bonding, a PLA-filled seam, surface fusion, or weld-like reinforcement—not automatically a fully coalesced monolithic weld.
A tug test can show that a practical joint is useful, but it is not a standardized strength measurement. The original work did not provide controlled tensile testing, comparisons with epoxy or cyanoacrylate, fatigue or impact testing, heat cycling, long-term aging, or evidence for load-bearing or safety-critical use.
Material and joint limitations
Use PLA sticks primarily with PLA parts. PLA-to-ABS or PLA-to-PETG joints may rely mainly on mechanical adhesion rather than compatible melting. Different colors and formulations can flow differently. Filled or abrasive filaments may clog or wear the nozzle, and damp material can produce bubbles and inconsistent flow.

Paint, grease, dust, glossy skins, large gaps, and heavily textured surfaces can reduce adhesion. Parts with different softening temperatures may distort before the bead bonds. The joint should also have useful geometry: a fillet, overlap, keyed feature, or backing rib is more dependable than relying on a bead across a poorly fitted butt joint.

Common failure modes
The PLA only softens
The gun may be too cool, the chamber may not be fully heated, or the filament may need different processing conditions. Try a high-temperature or adjustable gun and allow more warm-up time. Do not increase heat indefinitely; smoke, discoloration, and degradation mean you should stop.
PLA backs up through the inlet
The stick may be undersized, porous, too short, or damaged. Check the diameter, increase wall count and infill, and use a straight solid stick. Never keep squeezing the trigger against rising back pressure.
The feed lever slips
Smooth PLA is harder than ordinary glue and may not give the teeth enough purchase. Add angled notches, then adjust their spacing to the actual lever travel. Inspect a sacrificial stick to see where the teeth contact it.
The gun jams
Possible causes include an incorrect diameter, degraded PLA, mixed adhesive residue, or a malformed stick. Disconnect power, allow the gun to cool safely, and use the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Retire the tool if its heater or feed path appears damaged.

The seam is weak
Improve the fit, clean the surfaces, apply the bead more quickly, and hold the parts still while cooling. Roughen hidden bonding surfaces modestly if appropriate. Add mechanical engagement or use the PLA bead as reinforcement rather than the sole structural element.
Safety
- Wear appropriate eye protection and work in good ventilation.
- Keep hands, clothing, cables, and flammable materials away from the hot nozzle and bead.
- Use a stable, heat-resistant work surface.
- Expect the modified tool to present normal glue-gun burn and electrical hazards, plus possible polymer-degradation fumes.
- Do not use the method for certified repairs, pressure-bearing parts, lifting equipment, guards, or other safety-critical applications.
- Do not force a jammed stick or remove molten material by hand.
Buying a suitable gun
Prioritize the stick diameter first, then temperature control, feed quality, cleanability, and replaceability. A high-wattage rating alone does not prove PLA compatibility.
- Surebonder PRO2-220HT is a full-size, 220 W high-temperature gun for approximately 11 mm sticks. Its official listing showed a $109.99 price signal, but it is marketed for hot-melt adhesive, not PLA.
- Novus K-311/K-511 range includes models spanning roughly 140–230°C, including two-stage or adjustable-temperature options.
- Powerhold HD220 is listed as a 300 W adjustable-temperature gun in approximately the 140–230°C range, using roughly 11–11.5 mm sticks.
- DEDRA DED7557 is listed at 11.2 mm, approximately 100–220°C, and about three minutes of warm-up. It is a European/230 V listing, so verify electrical compatibility before purchase.
Avoid mini 7 mm guns, low-temperature craft models, and products with no dependable temperature or stick-size specifications.
Alternatives
| Option | Best when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 3D pen | You need small, controlled PLA repairs using ordinary 1.75 mm filament | Lower output and less force than a glue gun |
| Conventional hot glue | You want flexible, temporary, or dissimilar-material tacking | Softens more readily and is less rigid |
| Cyanoacrylate or epoxy | You need a thin, precise adhesive joint or are joining different materials | Cyanoacrylate can be brittle; epoxy takes longer to cure |
| Friction welding | You want localized PLA fusion | Harder to control and can damage the surface |
| Mechanical joining | The assembly must be serviceable or carry substantial load | Requires design features, hardware, or extra preparation |
Verdict
Printing PLA sticks for a hot-glue gun is a worthwhile workshop experiment for hidden seams in large PLA prints, especially when clamping is awkward and a rigid reinforcement bead is useful. It depends on three variables you must tune for your particular tool: actual melt performance, stick diameter, and feed engagement.
Use a sacrificial high-temperature or adjustable gun, print a dense measured stick, add gun-specific feed notches, and test extrusion before committing to a finished part. Treat the result as a bonded or partially fused reinforcement—not a certified plastic weld—and choose adhesive, friction welding, or mechanical fastening when the joint must be thin, flexible, highly cosmetic, or structurally dependable.
