The wall depth only tells you how the header must fit the framing; the header member itself must be selected for the opening span, the loads above it, the lumber or engineered-product specifications, its bearing and connections, and the plans and requirements adopted where the project is located.
Tim Carter’s Ask the Builder article describes one way to make a flush header in a 2×6 wall: stand two pieces of framing lumber on edge and sandwich a flat 2×3 between them. That assembly is stated as 5.5 inches deep, matching the article’s nominal 2×6 wall depth. It is a wall-depth construction example, not a universal answer to “what size header do I need?”

What a 2×6 window header actually describes
A window header is the structural member spanning the rough opening. It transfers weight from the framing above the window to the king and jack studs at each side. “2×6 header” usually describes the wall in which the header sits, not a complete header design.
That distinction matters because two openings in identical 2×6 walls can require different headers. A short opening under a light roof load may have a different design from a wider opening supporting a floor, roof, upper story, or concentrated point load. The same nominal lumber size can also have different capacity depending on species, grade, defects, moisture condition, and whether the members act together as intended.

“The biggest issue you’re facing is the size lumber to use.”
The wall depth and the structural span are separate design questions. First establish the member required for the actual loads and opening. Then detail that member so it fills the 2×6 wall and leaves the intended interior and exterior surfaces flush.
The flush 2×6 assembly described by Tim Carter
Two framing members on edge
Carter’s example uses two pieces of framing lumber stood on edge. Their orientation creates the principal depth of the built-up header and allows the assembly to carry load as a combined member when it is properly specified, fastened, supported, and accepted by the project plans.

A flat 2×3 fills the wall depth
A flat 2×3 is placed between the larger pieces. Carter states that the resulting assembly totals 5.5 inches, matching the wall depth he is addressing. This is a method for filling the depth of a nominal 2×6 wall; it is not a statement that every 2×6 window should receive two particular boards and a 2×3.

Closed-cell foam in the cavity
The article also recommends adding closed-cell foam in the cavity during assembly. Treat that as the author’s insulation or air-sealing recommendation, not as a structural requirement. Foam does not establish the header’s load capacity, replace required fastening, or make an undersized member acceptable.
Why wall depth cannot select the header size
The correct member cannot be selected from “2×6” alone. Before any lumber is cut, the design needs the information below.
- Rough-opening span: the clear width between the supports, including the exact opening shown on the plans.
- Loads above: roof, ceiling, floor, upper-story, snow, wind, and any concentrated loads that bear over the opening.
- Material properties: species, grade, allowable values, dimensions, or the published properties of an engineered product.
- Bearing and supports: the length of header bearing at each end, the jack-stud arrangement, and the ability of the supporting wall or post to carry the reaction.
- Connections: fastening between built-up members, attachment to the surrounding framing, and any required straps, hangers, or hold-down details.
- Jurisdictional requirements: the locally adopted code, approved drawings, permits, and any engineering review required for the project.
If one of those inputs is unknown, a board count or nominal size is only a guess. The available project examples reinforce this point: member selection is tied to a particular building, geometry, code basis, and set of loads.

| Opening width described in the article | Bearing at each end | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 6 feet | 1.5 inches | Use only as the article’s recommendation; verify the approved plans and local requirements. |
| Wider than 6 feet | 3 inches | Use only as the article’s recommendation; verify the approved plans and local requirements. |
These dimensions are not established here as current, universal code provisions. Bearing must be checked together with the reaction at each end, the capacity of the jack studs and supporting wall, and the actual material selected. A header with enough bending capacity can still fail if its bearing or support is inadequate.
What project-specific reports demonstrate
A conceptual six-foot residential header
A public Puyallup project report describes a conceptual six-foot window header designed from specified residential project inputs and a named code basis. Its value is illustrative: a six-foot opening can be designed only after the building loads, geometry, materials, and governing requirements are defined. The report is not a sizing table for another house, climate, wall layout, or lumber grade.
An engineered rim-board product used as a header
A federal laboratory report describes an engineered rim-board product used as a header in a particular building assembly. That example shows that a header does not have to use the same built-up solid-sawn arrangement described by Carter. It does not establish that the product, thickness, fastening pattern, or capacity is suitable for an unrelated opening. Any engineered product must be used within its published design values and the project’s approved details.

- Locate the approved opening. Confirm the rough-opening width, height, wall line, and whether the window is in a bearing wall. Do not size from the window unit’s nominal marketing dimension.
- Trace the load path. Determine what sits above the opening. Follow joists, rafters, trusses, beams, posts, and upper-story walls to see whether a concentrated reaction lands near the window.
- Identify the design basis. Use the project’s approved drawings and locally applicable requirements. If plans do not specify the header, obtain the needed design from the responsible designer or engineer rather than copying a generic detail.
- Select the member for the span and loads. The choice may be a built-up solid-sawn assembly, an engineered wood product, or another approved solution. Confirm species or product grade, allowable design values, and any limits on holes, notches, or cuts.
- Check end reactions and bearing. Verify the specified bearing length, jack-stud count, king-stud arrangement, and the capacity of the supporting framing. Use Carter’s 1.5-inch and 3-inch figures only as points to verify, not as automatic code compliance.
- Detail the wall-depth fit. If the selected design is the flush assembly described by Carter, place the larger members on edge and the flat 2×3 between them to reach the stated 5.5-inch depth. Confirm that the actual specified stock and any sheathing, drywall, siding, or insulation layers align with the wall design.
- Install the connections exactly as detailed. A built-up header is not one structural unit merely because boards touch. Use the fastening schedule, adhesive limitations, straps, or hardware shown on the approved detail. Do not substitute fasteners without approval.
- Inspect before closing the wall. Check member grade or product stamp, orientation, bearing, support studs, opening dimensions, and connection pattern. Photograph the work and resolve discrepancies before insulation and finishes conceal it.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling the header “a 2×6”
A nominal wall size is not a structural design. Correct it by separating the wall-depth detail from the header member calculation.
Copying the two-board-and-2×3 example for every opening
The assembly describes how to fill the wall depth, not how to establish capacity. Correct it by obtaining the member size and fastening detail for the actual span and loads.
Ignoring loads that do not align with the opening
Joists, rafters, trusses, posts, and upper walls can create concentrated reactions. Correct it by tracing the load path instead of judging the opening by width alone.

Mixing unspecified lumber
Generic boards from a lumber pile do not prove the grade or structural properties required by the design. Correct it by buying the specified species and grade, or the specified engineered product, and retaining its identification.
Using foam as a structural fix
Closed-cell foam may help fill or seal a cavity, but it does not increase header capacity or replace the required framing. Correct it by treating insulation and structure as separate decisions.
Buying material for the specified design
The useful category-level search phrase is 2x6 framing lumber, but that phrase does not identify a structural grade, length, species, or header capacity. A generic 2×6 board should never be presented as automatically sufficient for a window header.
Recommended Free Tools
Take the written specification to a local lumberyard or building-material supplier. Match every piece to the approved species, grade, dimensions, and length; for engineered products, match the exact product and installation requirements. If the supplier proposes a substitution, have the designer or engineer approve it before installation.
Bottom line
For a 2×6 wall, Carter’s flush-wall example uses two edge-set framing members with a flat 2×3 between them, producing a stated 5.5-inch assembly. That answers how one header can fill the wall depth. It does not answer which structural member your window needs. Final sizing depends on the opening, loads, material properties, bearing, connections, approved plans, and locally applicable requirements.
