No houseplant is maintenance-free, and these 20 options are a practical shortlist—not a universal ranking. Some tolerate dry spells or dimmer rooms; others need brighter light or steadier moisture. Match the plant to its spot, then water according to the soil and the plant rather than a fixed calendar.
Choose by light, watering habits, and space
Start with the location, not the plant name. Light changes with window direction, season, and distance from the glass; a room that feels bright to a person may still be dim for a plant. A very dark corner is not the same as low light. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends choosing plants to suit their location, taking room light, humidity, and temperature into account: RHS houseplant selection advice.

- Dimmer locations: Cast iron plant, snake plant, pothos, and peace lily are among the options identified for low-light settings. Low light does not mean no light.
- Medium or indirect light: Heartleaf philodendron, spider plant, ZZ plant, Chinese evergreen, and dragon tree are candidates to consider, while checking the specific plant’s needs.
- Sunny windows: Aloe and ponytail palm are better candidates for sunnier spaces. Avoid assuming every plant tolerates direct sun.
- Drying out between waterings: Snake plant and ponytail palm are noted for drought tolerance or water storage. Pothos is described as forgiving, but that does not mean it should be left dry indefinitely.
- More regular moisture: Peace lily, parlor palm, and English ivy need more attention to soil moisture than the most drought-tolerant choices.
- Room for trailing growth: Pothos and English ivy can trail. Snake plant and dragon tree grow upright; ZZ plant and parlor palm are relatively compact or slow-growing options.
These are broad comparisons, not a substitute for the care guidance for the particular species or cultivar you buy. Iowa State University Extension’s guide includes many of these plants among low-maintenance or beginner options, but their needs are not identical: Iowa State University Extension houseplant guide.
20 low-maintenance houseplants to consider
For a dimmer room or a forgiving routine
- Pothos (Epipremnum aureum). A trailing plant Iowa State Extension describes as forgiving. UF/IFAS includes pothos among plants for dimmer rooms; UNH Extension describes it as suited to medium light and moderately moist soil. Let its needs guide watering rather than treating it as indestructible.
- Snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata, also classified as Dracaena trifasciata). An upright choice with strong drought tolerance. UNH Extension says it tolerates bright through low light and recommends allowing the soil to dry between waterings.
- Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum). A frequently recommended easy-care option, named by both Iowa State Extension and UF/IFAS. It is a useful shortlist candidate if you want a leafy plant without a complicated care routine.
- ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). A slow-growing plant that does not need frequent repotting, according to UNH Extension. Keep its soil slightly moist rather than soggy; “low maintenance” does not mean keeping it wet.
- Peperomia. Iowa State Extension includes peperomia among low-maintenance choices. The name covers different species, so check the care requirements of the exact plant before buying.
- Heartleaf philodendron. Iowa State Extension names it as a low-maintenance choice, and UF/IFAS identifies philodendrons among low-light options. Confirm the needs of the particular philodendron being sold.
- Cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior). A strong candidate for a dimmer spot: Iowa State Extension says it endures low light and lack of water better than most houseplants, and UF/IFAS also recommends it for dim locations.
- Peace lily (Spathiphyllum). It tolerates low light, though Iowa State Extension notes that it flowers best in indirect light. It wilts when dry and can revive after watering, but using wilting as the routine watering signal is less dependable than checking the soil.
- Parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans). UNH Extension says it tolerates medium to low light and prefers moderately moist soil. Consider it if you can check moisture more consistently than a drought-tolerant plant requires.
For brighter rooms and other locations
- Ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata). Its water-storing base helps it tolerate dry conditions, according to Iowa State Extension. UF/IFAS recommends it for sunny spaces, making it a better fit for a bright location than a dark corner.
- Dragon tree (Dracaena marginata). Iowa State Extension says moderate to indirect light is best; in low light, the plant may stretch excessively. Choose it for a spot with useful natural light rather than expecting it to thrive in a dark room.
- Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema). Listed by Iowa State Extension as a beginner option. UNH Extension recommends avoiding direct sun and letting the soil dry slightly before watering.
- Aloe (Aloe vera). An Iowa State Extension beginner option that UF/IFAS places among plants for sunnier spaces. Consider it where natural light is abundant.
- Jade plant (Crassula ovata). Iowa State Extension lists it as a beginner option, and the RHS identifies jade as its best easy-care succulent in its quick facts. Give it a suitably bright location.
- Rubber plant (Ficus elastica). Included in Iowa State Extension’s additional beginner options. Check the profile for the plant you select before deciding whether your room and routine suit it.
- Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa). Another Iowa State Extension beginner option. Its inclusion on a shortlist does not establish that it will suit a dim location or every household.
- English ivy (Hedera helix). A trailing option named by Iowa State Extension, but not a plant to neglect for long dry spells. UNH Extension says it prefers moist soil and may drop leaves if it dries out completely.
- Money tree (Pachira aquatica). Listed by Iowa State Extension as an additional beginner option. Confirm care requirements for the particular plant before purchase.
- Lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana). Named by Iowa State Extension as a beginner option. Check the seller’s care information for the form and growing setup you are buying.
- Holiday cactus (Schlumbergera). Included in Iowa State Extension’s beginner options; UF/IFAS suggests Christmas cactus for sunnier spaces. Check the specific plant’s requirements rather than applying care advice for desert cacti.
The plants in this list are not equally tolerant, and the available guidance is more detailed for some than for others. For a plant whose needs are only broadly established here, use a reliable profile for the exact species or cultivar rather than assuming all beginner plants share one care routine.

Water based on the soil, not the date
Watering frequency depends on the plant and its container. UF/IFAS offers a general starting point for most houseplants: let the upper inch of soil dry, then water thoroughly, and do not leave the pot standing in water. This is general advice, not a rule for every species; plants with different moisture preferences need different checks. See UF/IFAS houseplant care guidance.
- Check the soil before watering instead of following a weekly schedule.
- Use a container with good drainage and a suitable soilless potting mix; UNH Extension advises against letting plants sit in standing water.
- Adjust for the plant, pot, and room. A small pot, a warm room, and a moisture-loving plant will not behave like a slow-growing, drought-tolerant one.
These basics are not permission to water every plant the same way. When you bring a plant home, use care instructions for its species and observe how quickly its soil dries in your space.

When natural light is limited
Use available natural daylight first. If a plant needs more brightness than its location provides, the RHS says a purpose-made grow lamp can add light; ordinary domestic lighting is not suitable for plant growth. A grow light is an optional aid, not a substitute for choosing a plant that fits the room.

Before bringing a plant home
- Check household safety. Toxicity has not been established here for all 20 plants. If pets or children could chew leaves, verify the exact species with an authoritative, current safety source before choosing it.
- Check the plant label. Common names can cover multiple species or cultivars with different requirements. Confirm the botanical identity and care needs of the plant being sold.
- Choose sound stock and suitable compost. The RHS recommends buying reputable, nursery-propagated plants and using peat-free compost.
- Be realistic about the room. Match the plant to its available light, temperature, humidity, and the amount of attention you can give it. No shortlist can make a mismatched location work.
