Indoor pools can feel like a glass garden room, a quiet lap lane, a family recreation space, or a compact wellness suite. The strongest design starts with the intended use and the building that must contain it: pool water creates a high-dew-point environment, so architecture, glazing, materials, ventilation, and water treatment need to be planned together.

Glass garden room
Use broad glazing to connect the pool visually with planting or a landscape. Specify the glass, frames, and air delivery with condensation in mind; glazing is viable only when the enclosure and mechanical design work together.

Conservatory-inspired pool hall
Borrow a greenhouse-like rhythm of roof framing and glass for a light, airy character. Before settling on the look, have the team assess dew point, thermal bridges, and condensation at roof members and frames.
-
Skylit pool room
Bring daylight in from above with skylights or a glazed roof section. Roof glazing and its surrounding assembly need the same condensation analysis as windows, with suitable detailing for the project’s climate.
-
Indoor-outdoor view corridor
Orient the pool and glazing toward a garden or courtyard to make the landscape part of the room. Keep the pool hall’s controlled environment intact: openings, doors, frames, and transitions need deliberate detailing.
-
Long lap lane
Make a clear swimming route the organizing feature, with restrained poolside circulation and storage kept out of the lane. Dimensions and water conditions should follow the intended users and type of swimming rather than a generic template.

Compact plunge pool
A smaller pool can fit into a dedicated room without giving up a considered architectural setting. Its water surface, temperature, and activity still affect evaporation and the mechanical load, so compact does not mean exempt from proper system design.
-
Pool plus spa zone
Visually distinguish a calmer swimming area from a warmer spa zone through placement, lighting, or materials. Warm and agitated water can increase evaporation concerns, so the pool and spa should be assessed as part of the same mechanical plan.

Aquatic Technology All Weather CPO Pool Log Book- Complete 4 month log book for commercial pool and spa water conditions
- Easy to track pH, FAC, Bather Load, Pressure, Flow Rate, Backwashing, and more
- Two-days per page or two pools per page
- Heavy duty plastic cover - pages feature a plastic core that are tear, water, and grease resistant
- Designed to use poolside with little to no-risk
-
Wellness suite
Compose the pool with adjacent relaxation or treatment spaces for a retreat-like feel. Plan doorways and circulation so pool air and moisture do not migrate unchecked into rooms with different temperature and humidity conditions.
-
Dedicated pool pavilion
Give the pool its own enclosure and architectural identity, whether it is attached to the house or set apart. The pavilion still needs a correctly designed vapor retarder, envelope, and mechanical system; separation alone does not solve moisture management.

Minimalist mineral palette
Use a restrained palette of stone-like surfaces, muted colors, and clean lines to make water the visual focus. Select actual finishes for the humid, chlorinated environment with the project team rather than choosing on appearance alone.
-
Warm wood-look accents
Introduce warmth through carefully specified wood or wood-look details at selected locations. High humidity and condensation can damage unsuitable components, so material selection and detailing matter as much as the visual effect.
-
Stone and tile contrast
Use shifts in tone or texture to define the waterline, deck, and circulation zones. Ask the pool and construction team to review wet-area slip performance and local requirements; the cited technical guidance does not set a universal finish specification.

Reflective water ceiling
Let ripples cast changing reflections onto a calm ceiling or wall, using controlled lighting to shape the effect. Treat this as an aesthetic choice, not a promised performance benefit.

Layered ambient lighting
Combine general illumination with task lighting for circulation, steps, and seating. Coordinate fixture locations and specifications with the applicable pool-area electrical rules, which vary by jurisdiction and are not covered by the HVAC guidance cited here.
-
Pool with lounge seating
Create a dry relaxation zone with comfortable seating and a clear transition from wet to dry circulation. Avoid uncontrolled openings between the natatorium and adjacent rooms, where temperature and moisture conditions may differ.
-
Spectator-friendly layout
For a larger pool, give spectators a distinct place to sit without blocking swimmers or service routes. Depending on the layout, the spectator area may need separate microclimate treatment rather than being treated as part of the pool’s occupied zone.
-
Family recreation room
Use playful colors, storage, and family-friendly circulation to make the room inviting. Account for the additional activity and any water features: both can change evaporation and therefore the load the design team must assess.

Quiet, uncluttered lap room
Keep the room simple, with a clear lane and minimal visual distractions. A calmer water surface can also avoid unnecessary agitation; air movement over the water is one of the variables that affects evaporation.
-
Waterfall or spray feature
A waterfall or spray feature can be a dramatic focal point, but it is not merely a decorative add-on for the mechanical plan. Its evaporation load needs to be assessed individually along with the pool’s area, temperature, and activity.
-
Future-flexible pool room
Plan the pool room in relation to the wider building program, including access, service space, and how its enclosure meets adjacent areas. Do not assume the room will be easy or inexpensive to convert later; feasibility and cost depend on the actual building and are not established by the design guidance cited here.
How do you keep an indoor pool from causing condensation?
Condensation prevention starts with the building envelope and mechanical design working as one system. ASHRAE’s 2023 Handbook—HVAC Applications, Chapter 6, “Indoor Swimming Pools”, describes 40–60% relative humidity as a typical year-round range for natatoriums. It is a general design reference, not a universal target or code requirement: the appropriate conditions depend on the project, climate, use, and applicable regulations.

ASHRAE also says glass and window-frame surfaces should be kept 2–3 K above the pool-room dew point, recommends thermally broken frames, and calls for supply air to reach exterior windows and doors. These details help address cold surfaces where condensation can form. Roofs, walls, frames, and glazing all need to be considered in the enclosure design; a humidity-control unit cannot compensate for a faulty envelope.
Best Value
Air movement and humidity control must be designed for the room and its surfaces, not selected in isolation. The HVAC system also cannot correct poor pool-water chemistry, which can contribute to bad air quality. More ventilation alone may be expensive and ineffective when water chemistry is the underlying issue.

ASHRAE’s 2023 handbook gives 40–60% relative humidity as a typical year-round natatorium range. Its listed design conditions for recreational, therapeutic, competition, diving, hotel, and whirlpool or spa pools commonly fall at 50–60%. These figures are design guidance, not a universal setpoint: a qualified designer must account for the specific pool, occupancy, climate, enclosure, and operating conditions.
Relative humidity is only part of the picture. Dew point helps determine whether a surface—especially glass, frames, roof assemblies, or other cold areas—will collect moisture. The design team should consider air and water temperatures, surface temperatures, ventilation, and air distribution together.

Begin with how the pool will be used, then develop the architecture and mechanical design together. ASHRAE identifies pool surface area, water temperature, water features, activity, and air velocity over the water as factors affecting evaporation. It reports that peak evaporation rates for private and active public pools of comparable size may differ by more than 100%, illustrating why pool size alone is not enough to select a system.
ASHRAE lists a residential-pool activity factor of 0.5 and a minimum of 1.5 for wave pools and water slides. These are factors used to estimate evaporation, not ratings of a pool or its equipment. Feature-driven loads should be evaluated for the actual design rather than inferred from a generic pool type.
For system planning, compare the project’s climate, occupancy, humidity and dew-point control, envelope and glazing, ventilation and air distribution, water treatment, energy use, operating schedule, and maintenance needs. ASHRAE discusses compressorized, chilled-water-coil, and ventilation approaches to humidity control, but does not identify one as best for every project. ACCA’s 2023 Manual SPS covers HVAC design for enclosed swimming pools and spas; the full manual is a design reference, not a substitute for project-specific engineering or local code review.
