4. Use the ceiling as part of the design
Extend the room’s palette or pattern overhead to connect the upper bunk with the rest of the space. Check the ceiling height and upper-bunk clearance before adding a feature that could make the top bed feel cramped.
5. Choose a quiet base with one bold accent
Let the bed, walls, and larger furnishings stay simple, then add color in a ladder, bedding, or a small area of paint. This approach is easy to adjust if the room’s use or occupants change.

6. Fit bunks into an underused landing
A stair landing or other dead space may suit a custom bunk arrangement if its dimensions, access, and circulation work. 7. Build bunks into an alcove
An alcove can give a built-in a natural boundary and help organize the room. Have the dimensions checked for mattress fit, usable headroom, access, and the clearances required by the chosen bed and mattress.
8. Add inset bookshelves
Recessed shelves near a bunk can keep books and small personal items close without relying on a bedside table. Place them where they do not reduce the sleeping space, create a head-strike hazard, or interfere with rails and access.
9. Incorporate a storage niche
A built-in niche can hold a few bedtime essentials and reduce clutter around the bed. Its position and depth should be planned around the mattress and the sleeper’s movement, rather than added where it compromises safe clearance.

10. Give each bunk its own reading light
Individual reading lights let occupants use their beds independently. Select and locate fixtures so wiring and hardware do not obstruct climbing, guardrails, or safe movement; follow the fixture and bunk manufacturer’s installation guidance.

11. Add drawers under the lower bunk
Drawers beneath a lower bunk can use otherwise overlooked floor area for bedding or clothing. Confirm there is enough room to open them fully and that they will not block a doorway or the route to the ladder or stairs.

Stair drawers can combine access and storage in a custom bunk arrangement. Storage must not compromise the steps’ dimensions, stability, or safe use; have the design checked as a complete stair-and-bed assembly.

13. Use integrated plaster stairs
In a built-in room, plastered stairs can make the access route feel like part of the architecture rather than a separate ladder. This is a custom construction choice, so plan the stair geometry, handholds or other access details, and clearances alongside the bed itself. Architectural Digest’s built-in examples include integrated stairs and other millwork details.
14. Choose a ladder for a simpler footprint
A ladder can take less room than stairs and keeps the bed’s access visually light. Compare where it lands, how occupants climb it, and whether it can be used without obstructing circulation. The right choice depends on the users and the room, not appearance alone.
15. Consider stairs when the room can spare the space
Stairs may offer a different approach to access and can sometimes incorporate storage. They take floor area, so map their footprint and the path around them before committing. Neither stairs nor ladders make a design automatically suitable for every age or user.

Privacy and room sharing
16. Add curtains for a more private bunk
Curtains can make an open bunk feel more personal and create a fort-like atmosphere. Choose a setup that can be opened easily and kept clear of guardrails, the ladder or stairs, and any other required safety features.
17. Screen one sleeping space, not the whole room
A curtain at one bunk can offer a sense of separation while leaving the rest of the room open. Consider how the screen affects airflow, light, access, and visibility, as well as whether it can be kept away from the bed’s safety components.
18. Give each sleeper a small zone of their own
Use distinct bedding, a reading light, or a nearby shelf to help each occupant personalize a shared room. Keep changes within the space allowed by the bed design, and do not attach accessories in ways that alter a guardrail or access point.
Choose a layout around the room and its users
19. Compare twin-over-twin with a larger lower bunk
A larger lower bunk can suit a guest room or accommodate a different mix of sleepers, while twin-over-twin keeps the sleeping surfaces more alike. Check the exact mattress sizes the bed accepts and how the wider lower bed affects circulation and furniture placement; do not assume that every bunk supports a larger lower mattress.
20. Make the design serve the room’s flow
Start with who will use the beds, how they will reach them, and how people move through the room. Then decide whether freestanding or built-in bunks, a ladder or stairs, open or curtained beds, and integrated storage make sense. A practical plan also leaves room to change sheets, clean, and use nearby doors and furnishings.
Safety and fit checks before styling
In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s bunk-bed business guidance describes federal requirements addressing entrapment hazards. For the rule, a bunk bed is one whose mattress foundation bottom is more than 30 inches above the floor. The CPSC says upper bunks need at least two guardrails, with at least one on each side, and that guardrail tops must be at least 5 inches above the top of the mattress. Mattress thickness, openings, testing, and required labels also matter. Consult the CPSC’s Bunk Beds Business Guidance and check current requirements for the relevant jurisdiction.
