15 Small Apartment Ideas to Maximize Decor and Storage

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make a small apartment work harder, plan the layout and storage before adding decor. Measure the space, decide what each area needs to do, then use flexible furniture, vertical storage, and clear surfaces to make room for daily life. Mirrors, light colors, layered lighting, and rugs can make a room feel brighter or more defined, but they do not add floor area.

Plan the layout before buying furniture

1. Measure and sketch the apartment

Record room dimensions, door swings, windows, and outlets. Sketch the floor plan and mark where you need to sleep, work, relax, and eat. This helps you assess whether furniture will fit and whether you can move around it before you shop. IKEA recommends starting with the room’s measurements and intended uses in its studio-apartment decorating guide.

2. Give different activities their own zones

A studio or open-plan apartment can feel more organized when sleeping, working, and lounging areas have clear boundaries. Arrange furniture to signal each use: for example, place a sofa with its back toward the bed, or tuck a desk into a corner rather than letting it take over the living area. The boundaries can be visual rather than permanent.

3. Use a rug to define an area

A rug can distinguish a sitting or dining area without a built partition. Choose a size that fits the furniture grouping and leaves a practical path through the room. Lowe’s includes rugs among its ideas for defining areas in a small apartment.

4. Try an open-backed bookcase as a divider

Where you need a stronger boundary, an open-backed bookcase can separate spaces while allowing light to pass through. Keep its height and placement in proportion to the room, and avoid putting it where it blocks a window, outlet, or main walkway. IKEA recommends an open bookshelf as one way to distinguish areas in a studio.

Use furniture to add storage and flexibility

5. Put vertical storage on an underused wall

Tall shelving or a bookcase makes use of wall height rather than taking up additional floor area. Secure furniture as appropriate for its design and the wall, and keep frequently used items at reachable heights. Interior designer Jennifer Hunter told Livingetc, “In a New York City apartment, I’m always looking for opportunities to add storage, especially vertical storage.”

6. Store occasional-use items inside furniture

A storage ottoman, bench, or bed with drawers can hold items that would otherwise occupy a separate bin or shelf. Before choosing one, compare its footprint, accessible storage volume, and how easily you can open it in the space available. Keep everyday essentials where they are easy to reach; use enclosed storage for things you need less often.

7. Consider a sofa bed or daybed

If the living area also needs to accommodate sleeping, a sofa bed or daybed can serve both purposes. Check the dimensions in both configurations, including the clearance needed to unfold it. A piece that technically fits as a sofa may not work if opening it blocks the room’s main route.

8. Fold away a desk when it is not in use

A fold-down or wall-mounted desk can be useful when a full-time desk would crowd circulation. Measure the open position as well as the closed position, and check that the wall and installation method are suitable. For renters, get permission before drilling or making permanent changes.

9. Choose an expandable dining table

An expandable table can stay compact for everyday use and provide more surface when needed. Measure for both sizes, including the space for chairs to move back. If expansion makes it difficult to pass through the room, a smaller fixed table may be the more practical choice.

Make the apartment feel brighter and more open

10. Place a mirror to reflect available light

A mirror can reflect daylight or a lamp and create an impression of depth. Position it where it reflects something useful—such as a window or a well-lit part of the room—rather than a cluttered corner. It changes how the space feels, not its actual size.

11. Layer different kinds of lighting

Combine overhead lighting with task lighting and a floor or table lamp where possible. A single ceiling fixture may leave work or reading areas dim; local light lets you illuminate the part of the room being used. Choose lamps that fit available surfaces and do not obstruct walkways.

12. Keep the palette cohesive, with room for an accent

A connected palette can help an open-plan room feel unified. Light hues are one option: Benjamin Moore color expert Hannah Yeo told Livingetc, “Light hues — such as soft whites and warm creams — help maximize available light, creating an open, airy atmosphere while maintaining a sense of sophistication.” You can still use a deliberate accent color; the aim is coordination, not an all-white rule.

Contain everyday clutter

13. Create an entry drop zone

Use hooks, a small shelf, or a freestanding hall tree to give coats, bags, and keys a designated place near the door. Pick a setup that fits the entry without narrowing the route in or out. If you rent, use a freestanding option or confirm that the lease permits wall fasteners.

14. Mix open and closed storage

Open shelves make selected objects easy to see and reach; closed cabinets, boxes, or organizers conceal the less display-worthy items. IKEA’s storage guide recommends combining open and closed storage and using organizers inside storage spaces. Reserve open shelves for things you want to access or display, and group smaller items in containers to keep them orderly.

15. Edit belongings and leave some surfaces clear

Storage helps, but filling every shelf and surface can make a compact room feel crowded. Keep the items you use or value, and leave some visible space around them. Interior designer Ariene Bethea told NBC Select, “You have to be a ruthless editor of your things.” IKEA likewise suggests choosing a few meaningful objects rather than filling every surface.

Check fit and rental rules before installation

Before committing to furniture or storage, compare its footprint with the usable space, check how it affects access and circulation, and consider whether its contents will stay visible or be concealed. For wall-mounted desks, shelving, hooks, paint changes, or other permanent alterations, check your lease and local requirements first. Lowe’s small-apartment guide also advises renters to review rental policies before making changes.
