12 Common Perennials to Plant in July for Late-Summer Blooms

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For reliable August and September color, plant healthy nursery transplants or established plugs in July. Purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, yarrow, blanket flower, threadleaf coreopsis, bee balm, blazing star, garden phlox, stonecrop, balloon flower, goldenrod and cardinal flower all offer late-summer interest, provided each plant is matched to the right light and soil moisture. Water new plants deeply and consistently through hot weather; July-sown seed may not produce a full first-season display.

The best perennials to plant in July

The bloom windows below are typical ranges from Iowa State University Extension, Cornell University, Colorado State University Extension and University of Illinois Extension references. Actual timing varies with cultivar, climate and establishment.

Perennial Typical bloom window Best site Why plant it in July Important considerations
Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) July–September Full sun Sturdy, naturalized look with a long summer display Keep evenly watered while roots establish
Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida) July–October Full sun; moist, well-drained soil Dependable daisy-like flowers; useful for birds and butterflies University of Illinois Extension lists this species for USDA Zones 3–9; verify the cultivar and your local climate
Yarrow (Achillea) June–October Full sun Long season, drought-tolerant reputation and flat flower heads that dry well Drainage matters, especially in humid or wet sites
Blanket flower (Gaillardia) June–September Full sun Red, gold or bicolor daisies keep color going through summer Do not leave crowns in saturated soil
Threadleaf coreopsis (Coreopsis verticillata) Summer, often two months or more Full sun Lemon-yellow flowers and an extended bloom period Give new plants regular water until established
Bee balm (Monarda didyma) July–August Sun to part shade, with reliable moisture A strong pollinator choice for midsummer It can spread quickly and may develop powdery mildew; provide air circulation
Blazing star (Liatris spicata) July–September Full sun; well-drained soil Upright bottle-brush spikes add height and structure Avoid standing water around the roots
Garden phlox (Phlox paniculata) July–September Sun with good air movement Tall clusters create a strong late-summer focal point Monitor for powdery mildew and avoid crowded planting
Stonecrop (Sedum hybrids) August–September Full sun; dry, well-drained beds Succulent foliage handles lean, dry conditions once established Wet winter or summer soil can cause failure
Balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) July–September Full sun to part shade; well-drained soil Distinctive balloon-shaped buds and blue, pink or white flowers Choose a stable location; established roots dislike repeated disturbance
Goldenrod (Solidago spp.) July–September, with some species later Full sun; well-drained soil for the listed species Extends nectar and pollen availability late in the season Species differ in height, spread and bloom timing; check the plant label
Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) July–August Moist to wet soil; sun to part shade Bright mid- to late-summer color where dry-site plants struggle Do not let the root zone dry out during establishment

How to choose among the 12 plants

Match sunlight first

Most of the list performs best in full sun: coneflower, black-eyed Susan, yarrow, blanket flower, threadleaf coreopsis, blazing star, stonecrop and many goldenrods. Balloon flower tolerates part shade, while cardinal flower is suited to sun or part shade in moist ground. Bee balm and garden phlox also need enough light and airflow to reduce mildew pressure.

Match soil moisture and drainage

Cardinal flower is the specialist for consistently moist soil. Black-eyed Susan prefers moisture that drains rather than stagnant water. Stonecrop, yarrow, blanket flower and blazing star are better choices for dry or sharply drained beds. Improve drainage before planting rather than trying to correct persistently wet soil afterward.

Plan for height, spread and structure

Blazing star and garden phlox provide vertical accents; stonecrop forms a lower, substantial mass; and the daisy-shaped flowers of coneflower, black-eyed Susan, blanket flower and coreopsis knit a planting together. Bee balm can spread quickly, so allow room or divide it when it outgrows its position. Heights and mature spread vary by cultivar, so use the nursery label for spacing.

Will a perennial planted in July bloom this year?

A flowering transplant or established plug can contribute color this summer, especially when it already has buds. There is no dependable general percentage for July plantings that bloom in the same season. Bloom windows describe when established plants typically flower, not a guaranteed first-year result.

Seed is a valid and often economical route, but many perennial species need time to germinate, build roots and experience seasonal cues. A July sowing may produce foliage only, a few flowers or a fuller display in a later year. Treat first-season results as variable rather than promised.

How to plant perennials during July heat

  1. Select a healthy plant. Choose a transplant or plug with firm stems, healthy foliage and roots that are not circling heavily or drying out.
  2. Prepare the site. Match the plant to its required sun and drainage. Remove competing weeds and loosen the planting area without creating a water-holding pocket.
  3. Water the container first. A hydrated root ball is less likely to collapse during planting.
  4. Dig at the right depth. Set the crown at the same level it occupied in the container; do not bury stems or leave the root ball raised above surrounding soil.
  5. Backfill and firm gently. Eliminate large air pockets without compacting the soil around the roots.
  6. Water deeply. Soak the entire root zone immediately after planting so moisture reaches beyond the original container shape.
  7. Maintain consistent moisture. Check soil frequently during hot, windy weather and water deeply when the root zone begins to dry. Avoid alternating severe drought with flooding.
  8. Mulch carefully. A modest organic mulch layer helps reduce evaporation, but keep it away from crowns and stems.
  9. Remove damaged flowers or foliage. This reduces stress and keeps the plant focused on establishment; retain healthy buds if you want to see first-season color.

Building a late-summer pollinator sequence

Cornell’s succession list places bee balm, blazing star, purple coneflower, hyssop and yarrow among July–August resources, with goldenrod extending into August–October. Black-eyed Susan can continue into September and October in that list. Combining several bloom periods is more useful than planting a single mass that finishes at once.

University of Maryland Extension notes that native plants blooming in summer support native bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Choose regionally appropriate species and cultivars where possible, and avoid treating every insect visit as a pest problem. Plant labels and local extension guidance are the best checks for native status in your area.

Common July-planting problems

Leaves wilt soon after planting

Heat, transplant shock or a dry root ball is usually responsible. Shade a newly planted container temporarily during the hottest afternoon if practical, then water the root zone deeply and consistently.

The plant remains wet and declines

Overwatering, heavy soil or a poorly drained site can suffocate roots. Move future plantings toward raised or better-drained ground and reserve cardinal flower for areas that naturally stay moist.

Powdery mildew appears

Bee balm and garden phlox are the main watch points in this list. Improve spacing and air movement, water at the soil line and remove badly affected foliage. Select resistant cultivars when available locally.

A seed packet produces no flowers

That outcome is common for a midsummer sowing and does not prove the seed failed. Protect seedlings from drying out, thin as directed and expect flowering to be stronger after the plants have had more time to establish.

A practical July planting plan

  • Sunny, average bed: combine purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, threadleaf coreopsis and blazing star.
  • Dry, sharply drained bed: use yarrow, blanket flower and stonecrop.
  • Moist border: try cardinal flower with bee balm, while providing enough airflow for both.
  • Tall late-season display: group garden phlox, goldenrod and blazing star toward the back, with lower stonecrop or coreopsis at the edge.
