The most reliable way to deter burglars is to layer several modest protections rather than depend on one lock, alarm, or camera. Lock every exterior door, strengthen weak frames, secure accessible windows and sliding doors, improve visibility, make vacancy less obvious, reduce visible rewards, and keep records that help recover stolen property.
A safer home is not created by one expensive gadget. The most effective approach is a layered system that makes entry harder, increases the chance of detection, reduces the reward, and improves the odds of recovery. Start with the weakest accessible point: usually an unlocked door, a poorly anchored strike plate, an exposed patio door, an accessible window, or a garage that connects directly to the house.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Check every exterior door: Can it be locked from inside and outside? Does the deadbolt fully extend? Does the door flex or move in its frame?
- Inspect the door frame: Look for short screws, split wood, a loose strike plate, exposed hinges, or glass close enough to the lock to be a concern.
- Check accessible windows: Include basement windows, garage windows, ground-floor windows, and openings concealed by fences or shrubs.
- Test the patio door: Make sure a sliding door cannot be lifted from its track and that its secondary lock or track barrier actually fits.
- Look at the garage and sheds: Secure the overhead door, the door connecting the garage to the home, gates, tools, ladders, and outbuildings.
- Stand across the street after dark: Can you see entrances, paths, and side approaches? Is lighting creating glare or deep shadows?
- Look for vacancy signals: Accumulated mail, packages, flyers, dark interiors, and an empty driveway can reveal that nobody is home.
Fix the easiest weakness first. A reinforced front door does little for a ground-floor window hidden behind dense landscaping, and a camera does not compensate for a door that is routinely left unlocked.

11 practical tips to deter burglars
1. Lock every exterior door every time
Consistency is the cheapest security upgrade. Lock the front, side, rear, basement, garage, and patio doors whenever you leave, even for a short trip. Lock them while you are home if the door is not being actively used, particularly at night.
Exterior doors should be solid, fit their frames properly, and use a quality deadbolt. Older U.S. Department of Justice home-security checklists commonly identify a deadbolt with at least a one-inch throw as a useful benchmark, but the door, frame, strike plate, and installation all matter. The deadbolt should extend fully into a strike plate that is firmly anchored to the structure rather than held by a few short screws in superficial trim.
Do not rely on a locked handle alone, and do not leave spare keys under a mat, in a planter, or in another obvious hiding place. Renters should ask the landlord or property manager before changing locks or hardware. If a household member needs accessible entry, choose a solution that supports that need rather than creating a lock that people bypass.

2. Reinforce the door, frame, hinges, and sliding-door track
A lock is only one part of a door assembly. Forced entry often attacks the surrounding wood, the strike area, the hinges, or the door itself. Inspect for a hollow or weak door, a loose frame, a strike plate that moves, missing hinge screws, and screws that are too short to reach solid framing.
A door reinforcement kit can strengthen the jamb and strike area when it is compatible with the door construction and installed into substantial framing. In some situations, replacing short fasteners with appropriately sized structural screws and a stronger strike plate is the more relevant repair. Do not simply use the longest screw available: wiring, plumbing, framing layout, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions still matter.
Sliding glass doors need a separate inspection. Use a properly fitted secondary lock, track barrier, pin, dowel, or other manufacturer-approved device to prevent forced operation. Also check whether the panel can be lifted out of its track. A sliding glass door security bar can add delay, but it must fit the door and be removable quickly when the opening is part of an emergency escape route.
For an inward-opening exterior door, a door security bar may be useful as an additional delay layer. It is not a substitute for a sound frame and deadbolt, and it will not suit every door, floor surface, threshold, outward-opening door, or accessibility need. Confirm the fit before buying and make sure everyone in the home can release it without a key or complicated steps during an emergency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Secure accessible windows, not just the front door
Give extra attention to ground-floor, basement, garage, secluded, and otherwise reachable windows. A burglar may choose the opening that is least visible rather than the one that looks most inviting from the street.
Depending on the window type, useful layers can include window locks, sash stops, opening restrictors, laminated glass, security film, and vibration alarms. A window opening restrictor can limit how far a window opens, while a window vibration alarm can create an alert when the glass or frame is disturbed. These products are not interchangeable: a restrictor, lock, alarm, and protective glazing address different problems.
Check local fire-safety requirements before adding locks, bars, restrictors, or other devices to bedroom windows or any required escape route. Occupants must be able to open an emergency exit from inside without unreasonable delay. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and consider children, older adults, and anyone who may need assistance evacuating.
4. Improve visibility around entrances
Trim shrubs, branches, vines, and other growth that conceals doors, windows, gates, and walkways. Keep the area immediately beside likely access points visible from the street, neighboring homes, or occupied rooms where practical.
This does not mean removing all landscaping. The aim is to avoid dense concealment next to an entry. A low planting bed may be compatible with visibility; tall, dense growth beside a side door can provide privacy for someone working at the lock. Keep fences and gates maintained, and make sure address numbers are visible so emergency responders can find the property quickly.
5. Use exterior and interior lighting strategically
Light entrances, paths, side passages, and vulnerable rear approaches, but avoid creating glare that makes observation harder. A bright fixture aimed directly into an occupant’s eyes can leave the surrounding area in deeper contrast. Aim lights downward or across the approach, and avoid shining them into neighbors’ windows.

Dusk-to-dawn fixtures can maintain visibility at key entrances. motion-activated security lights can draw attention to movement, especially around side doors, garages, and rear approaches. They should be positioned so normal activity does not trigger them constantly and so their activation does not create nuisance complaints.
For interior occupancy cues, use an indoor light timer or a smart plug configured to vary lights in rooms that would ordinarily be used. Constant illumination can look unnatural; varied schedules are more credible. Test timers before leaving and keep connected devices on a secure, updated network.
6. Make the home look occupied when you are away
Burglars may look for signs that a property is unattended. Before leaving, arrange for mail, newspapers, flyers, and packages to be collected or held. In the United States, USPS Hold Mail can pause delivery for an eligible address for 3 to 30 days. Confirm current eligibility and service details with USPS before relying on it.
Ask a trusted person to check the property, move bins when appropriate, collect deliveries, and report anything unusual. Keep ordinary exterior routines going when practical, but do not give a temporary house-sitter more access or information than necessary.
Avoid announcing an empty home publicly in real time. Review social-media privacy and location-sharing settings, and consider posting travel photographs after returning rather than broadcasting that the house is vacant. This is only one part of security, not a replacement for locks, lighting, and a reliable person checking the property.
7. Use alarms as a detection and response layer, not a guarantee
An alarm can create a useful detection signal and may cause an intruder to leave sooner. It does not make a home burglar-proof. The value depends on sensible sensor placement, reliable communications, correct arming, occupants who know how to use it, and a response plan.

False alarms can create costs and may burden police resources. Before signing a monitored-security contract, check installation charges, equipment ownership, recurring monitoring fees, contract length, renewal terms, warranty coverage, cancellation rights, backup communications, and what happens when the internet or power fails. Also check local alarm registration, permit, response, and false-alarm rules. The Federal Trade Commission specifically recommends reviewing these terms before committing.
A monitored home alarm can make sense for someone who wants professional notification, but compare the service terms with a well-configured unmonitored system and a dependable personal contact. Do not assume that an alarm company’s call automatically means police will arrive immediately; response policies vary by location and provider.
8. Add cameras or a video doorbell carefully
Cameras and video doorbells can improve awareness, document activity, and provide evidence after an incident. They do not replace physical security. A camera pointed at an unreinforced door records a problem; it does not strengthen the door.

Use privacy zones where available. Decide who needs remote access and remove access for people who no longer need it.
For a video doorbell or outdoor security camera, use a strong, unique password; enable two-factor authentication and available encryption; update firmware, applications, and the camera’s base station; secure the home router; and consider a separate network for internet-connected cameras. Review cloud-storage, retention, sharing, microphone, and subscription settings. A camera with poor account security can create a new privacy and cybersecurity problem.
Also plan for outages. Know whether the camera records locally, what happens during an internet interruption, how long batteries last, and whether important footage can be exported. Test night vision and the field of view rather than assuming the marketing description matches the property.

9. Reduce visible rewards and secure garages, sheds, and tools
Keep expensive electronics, tools, bicycles, firearms, collectibles, and other desirable property out of sight from windows. Close curtains or blinds when appropriate, but do not create concealment around every entry. Lock garage doors and the interior door from the garage to the home. Secure gates, sheds, workshops, and other outbuildings separately.
Recommended Free Tools
Put away ladders, pry bars, axes, and loose tools that could assist forced entry. Do not leave a garage remote in an unlocked vehicle parked outside. Check that the garage emergency-release mechanism cannot be manipulated from outside through an unprotected window or gap.
A safe can reduce casual access to documents and valuables, but a conspicuous safe is not automatically a complete security solution. Match the safe to the threat, anchor it where the construction and manufacturer’s instructions permit, and understand the difference between a burglary-resistant security safe and a fire-resistant document safe. A fire-resistant box may protect papers from heat while offering little resistance to theft.
10. Mark, photograph, and inventory valuables
Recovery becomes easier when you can give investigators precise information. Record each item’s make, model, serial number, distinctive marks, purchase information, approximate value, and photographs. Include tools, bicycles, electronics, appliances, collectibles, and other property that is difficult to describe from memory.
Store the inventory somewhere accessible if the house is unavailable, such as secure cloud storage or an off-site location. Protect the inventory itself because it may reveal what you own. Update it after major purchases and keep receipts when practical.
Operation Identification programs promoted by police departments commonly recommend marking eligible property, keeping an inventory, and displaying a notice or decal where appropriate. Follow local law-enforcement guidance about acceptable owner-applied identifiers. Never use a Social Security number as a marking, and never remove or alter a manufacturer’s serial number.
A property-engraving pen or other property-engraving tool may be appropriate for items that can safely be marked. For items that should not be altered, photographs and a serial number inventory log are safer alternatives. Marking and documentation may improve identification and recovery; do not treat them as a guaranteed deterrent.
11. Build a trusted neighborhood response plan
Know which neighbors are trustworthy and exchange contact information voluntarily. Agree on what someone should do if they see a broken window, an unfamiliar person at a door, repeated activity near a vacant home, or a package accumulating at an address.
A good plan is specific and lawful: observe from a safe location, contact the resident or an agreed emergency contact, and call emergency services when there is an immediate threat. Do not confront a suspected burglar, enter a neighbor’s property, or ask untrained people to investigate.

If the door, frame, window, or sliding-door problem involves structural repair or uncertain compatibility, a professional home security assessment can be more useful than guessing at a generic product. A qualified locksmith or door-and-window security installer can evaluate anchoring, clearances, hardware, and escape requirements. Verify licensing, insurance, scope of work, and local availability before hiring.
Do not create new risks while securing the home
- Do not block emergency egress. Bedroom windows and other required exits must remain usable from inside. Everyone in the household should know how to release any added bar, lock, or restrictor.
- Do not assume compatibility. Door security products differ for inward- and outward-opening doors, thresholds, frames, floor materials, sliding panels, and rental hardware.
- Do not ignore fire and building requirements. Check local codes, landlord rules, homeowners-association restrictions, and insurance requirements before modifying openings.
- Do not buy an alarm without reading the contract. Include equipment ownership, fees, cancellation, renewal, permits, false-alarm penalties, and outage procedures in the comparison.
- Do not treat a camera as automatically private. Secure the account, router, applications, recordings, microphones, and sharing permissions.
- Do not rely on a safe without understanding its rating. Theft resistance and fire resistance are different functions.
- Do not use landscaping or lighting that creates concealment. Dense shrubs and poorly aimed glare can make observation more difficult.
Leaving-home checklist
- Lock every exterior door, including the garage-to-house door.
- Confirm deadbolts are fully extended and the door is seated in the frame.
- Close and secure accessible windows and sliding doors.
- Close the garage door and remove or secure remotes in vehicles outside.
- Put away ladders, tools, bicycles, and other useful or valuable items.
- Set the alarm and confirm that the household knows the disarm procedure.
- Check cameras, batteries, recording settings, and remote-access accounts.
- Set varied interior lights and exterior lighting where appropriate.
- Hold or collect mail, packages, newspapers, flyers, and circulars.
- Ask a trusted person to check the property and provide an emergency contact method.
- Avoid real-time public posts that reveal the home is empty.
If you think someone has broken in
Do not enter or search the property. If you are outside, move to a safe location and call law enforcement. If you are inside and can leave safely, do so without confronting anyone; if you cannot, secure yourself in a safe location and call emergency services when it is safe.
Do not touch doors, windows, drawers, tools, surfaces, or missing-item locations unless necessary for immediate safety. Preserving the scene can help investigators collect evidence. Prepare your property inventory, serial numbers, photographs, and descriptions for law enforcement and your insurer. Follow local police instructions about reporting, scene access, and replacing compromised locks.
Basis for this guidance: The physical-security recommendations reflect U.S. Department of Justice home-security guidance and National Institute of Justice research on accessibility, occupancy, surveillance, and expected gain. Window measures are also consistent with Police.uk guidance. Alarm-contract cautions reflect Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance; camera-security cautions reflect FTC guidance on connected devices. USPS Hold Mail details should be confirmed with USPS, and property-marking and break-in response procedures vary by local police department.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first thing I should do to deter burglars?
Start with the easiest accessible point, not necessarily the front door. Check exterior doors and frames, patio doors, basement and ground-floor windows, garage access, lighting, landscaping, and vacancy signals. For many homes, repairing a weak strike area or adding a compatible door security bar provides more value than buying a camera before physical weaknesses are addressed.
Do alarms and cameras really deter burglars?
Yes, but only as one layer. An alarm can create a detection signal and may cause an intruder to leave sooner, while a camera can provide awareness or evidence. Neither replaces locked and reinforced doors, secured windows, good visibility, or a response plan. False alarms, monitoring contracts, privacy, cybersecurity, and power or internet outages also need to be considered.
How can I secure windows without creating a fire-safety problem?
Use window locks, sash stops, opening restrictors, laminated glass, security film, or vibration alarms according to the window and the risk. Never install a device that prevents occupants from using a required emergency escape route. Check local fire-safety requirements and make sure everyone can release the device from inside.
What can renters do to improve home security?
Ask the landlord or property manager before changing locks, adding reinforcement, installing window hardware, or mounting cameras. Choose reversible or approved improvements where required, and confirm that any device does not obstruct emergency egress or violate building rules.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Begin with behavior and the weakest entry point: lock consistently, reinforce the door and frame, secure accessible windows and sliding doors, improve visibility, and remove easy rewards. Then add alarms, cameras, occupancy cues, and property records as layers—with emergency egress, privacy, contracts, and local rules checked before installation.
