11 Inexpensive Home Upgrades That Cost Less Than $100

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can improve comfort, reduce water or energy waste, and address basic household safety without starting a major renovation. The most useful upgrades under $100 are usually targeted fixes: replace the bulbs you use most, seal a measured draft, reduce unnecessary water flow, or update an expired alarm.

This is a shopping-and-project guide, not a promise that every improvement will pay for itself in every home. “Under $100” generally means materials for one location or a single device. Prices, sales, local rebates, labor, and the number of fixtures or rooms can change the total. Check current pricing before buying; ENERGY STAR notes that smart thermostats alone can range from about $50 to $300, although rebates and sales may bring a qualifying model below $100. Check ENERGY STAR’s current smart-thermostat guidance before treating price as the deciding factor.

Start with the upgrades most likely to help

If you only want to complete a few projects, begin with the items that match a visible problem or a frequently used fixture:

  1. Frequently used incandescent bulbs: replace them with LEDs.
  2. Drafty doors or operable windows: use weatherstripping, caulk, or a door sweep according to the location of the gap.
  3. Bathroom water use: install a compatible WaterSense aerator or showerhead.
  4. Older, compatible HVAC controls: consider a certified smart thermostat after checking the wiring and equipment.
  5. Missing or expired alarms: replace smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms even though this is a safety upgrade rather than an energy-saving project.

Before shopping, identify the exact problem, measure the opening or fixture, and check whether the product must meet a certification, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or local-code requirement.

1. Replace frequently used bulbs with ENERGY STAR LED bulbs

Replacing incandescent bulbs in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, exterior fixtures, and other frequently used locations is usually one of the simplest improvements. ENERGY STAR says LED products can use up to 90% less energy than incandescent lighting, and certified products are independently evaluated for performance and service life. Learn how ENERGY STAR evaluates LED lighting.

Do not assume that every LED package carries the current ENERGY STAR label. The EPA explains that the label has been phased out for many common light-bulb applications, while high-performing recessed downlights may continue to qualify. Use the label where it applies, but also compare the specifications on the package.

Check before buying

  • Base: Match the socket, such as a common screw base or a smaller decorative base.
  • Shape: Confirm that the bulb fits inside the fixture and is suitable for enclosed fixtures if required.
  • Brightness: Compare lumens rather than relying only on the old incandescent wattage comparison.
  • Color temperature: Warm white generally looks softer; cooler temperatures may suit task areas.
  • Dimming: Choose a dimmable bulb only if the fixture uses a compatible dimmer.

For the best value, start with bulbs that stay on for the most hours. Replacing every bulb at once is not necessary.

2. Add adhesive weatherstripping around drafty doors and windows

Weatherstripping is designed for moving components: the perimeter of a door or an operable window. It can reduce uncomfortable drafts when the leakage is actually coming through the moving joint. The U.S. Department of Energy distinguishes this from caulking, which is generally used at stationary joints. Review DOE’s air-sealing guidance.

Clean and dry the surface before applying adhesive material. Measure the gap instead of guessing, because weatherstripping that is too thin may not seal and material that is too thick can prevent the door or window from closing. Check the seal by looking for daylight, feeling for air movement on a windy day, or using a suitable smoke-pencil test safely away from flames and combustion appliances.

Do not cover required drainage or ventilation paths. On windows, preserve weep paths that allow water to escape. If the frame is rotten, loose, or badly out of square, a strip of adhesive foam is only a temporary measure; the underlying repair may need attention.

3. Seal stationary cracks with paintable caulk

Caulk is the right tool for many fixed gaps around trim, baseboards, window frames, door frames, and utility penetrations. DOE describes caulking as a straightforward air-sealing technique that can provide a quick return when applied to suitable stationary gaps. See DOE’s distinction between caulk and weatherstripping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect first, then buy the product that matches the location. Interior trim often calls for a paintable acrylic-latex product. Exterior joints may need a more weather-resistant formulation, while wet areas require a caulk labeled for that environment. A caulk gun, one or more tubes, a utility knife, and a way to smooth the bead can fit within a $100 materials budget.

Caulking cautions

  • Remove loose, dirty, or failed material and follow the product’s surface-preparation instructions.
  • Use a continuous, appropriately sized bead rather than filling a large structural gap with caulk alone.
  • Do not seal intentional window weep holes.
  • Do not block combustion-air openings, required ventilation, or other openings that serve a safety purpose.
  • Allow the product to cure for the time stated on the label before painting or exposing it to water.

4. Install foam gaskets behind exterior-wall outlet and switch plates

Foam gaskets placed behind outlet and switch plates can reduce air movement through electrical boxes located on exterior walls. DOE includes these gaskets among basic air-sealing measures. Read the relevant DOE home-energy guidance.

This is a small comfort project, not a correction for unsafe electrical work. Turn off the circuit at the breaker before removing a plate and verify that power is off with an appropriate tester. If you find damaged insulation, loose connections, heat damage, an overcrowded box, or wiring you do not understand, reinstall the plate and have the issue evaluated by a qualified electrician.

Use gaskets only where they fit correctly. Do not force a plate against a box that is loose or improperly mounted, and do not use a gasket to hide a larger electrical or wall defect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Retrofit a bathroom faucet with a WaterSense aerator

A faucet aerator is one of the least expensive water-efficiency retrofits. EPA says WaterSense-labeled bathroom-faucet accessories use no more than 1.5 gallons per minute, at least 30% less than the 2.2-gpm standard, while meeting independently certified performance requirements. EPA estimates that replacing inefficient faucets and aerators can save an average family about 700 gallons of water per year, although actual results depend on use.

The WaterSense bathroom-faucet criteria discussed here apply to private lavatory and bar-sink contexts, not automatically to every kitchen or public faucet. Before ordering, remove or inspect the existing aerator and confirm its thread size. Some faucets have hidden or recessed aerators that require a small removal key; some are not readily replaceable.

After installation, check for leaks and make sure the stream is comfortable for the way the sink is used. Use EPA’s bathroom-faucet guidance and find WaterSense products rather than treating a generic low-flow claim as equivalent to certification.

6. Replace an old showerhead with a WaterSense-labeled model

EPA states that standard showerheads use 2.5 gallons per minute, while WaterSense models use no more than 2.0 gpm and must meet independent performance requirements for spray force, coverage, and pressure compensation. EPA estimates average household savings of about 2,700 gallons of water per year and more than $75 in annual water and energy costs. Those figures are averages, not a guarantee: household size, shower duration, water rates, water-heating fuel, and the old showerhead all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for the WaterSense label, then check the plumbing connection, available water pressure, handheld-hose arrangement, and any special requirements listed by the manufacturer. A replacement washer and plumber’s tape may also be useful, but tape should be applied correctly and should not be used to compensate for damaged threads.

A 2.0-gpm showerhead may feel different from the old fixture, especially in a low-pressure system. Performance requirements reduce that risk, but no product can guarantee an identical spray experience in every home. Review EPA’s showerhead requirements and savings information before shopping.

7. Upgrade to a compatible ENERGY STAR smart thermostat

A smart thermostat can be worthwhile when it is compatible with the HVAC system and the household will use its scheduling, setback, or learning features. ENERGY STAR says certified smart thermostats are evaluated with real-world field data and average approximately 8% heating-and-cooling savings, or about $50 per year. Savings vary with climate, equipment, occupancy, existing thermostat settings, and behavior. See the current ENERGY STAR smart-thermostat guidance.

The purchase price is only one part of the decision. A model under $100 may be available on sale or after a utility rebate, but not every certified model meets that budget. Check the ENERGY STAR Product Finder and the HVAC manufacturer’s compatibility checker before removing the existing thermostat.

Compatibility checklist

  • Photograph the existing wiring and identify the terminals before disconnecting anything.
  • Check whether the system has a C-wire or whether the thermostat requires an approved adapter.
  • Confirm compatibility with heat pumps, dual-fuel systems, multi-stage equipment, or proprietary controls.
  • Be especially cautious with millivolt systems and systems that do not use conventional low-voltage thermostat wiring.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and local electrical requirements.

If you cannot identify the HVAC equipment or wiring confidently, the appropriate next step is an HVAC professional—not a guess based on the thermostat’s appearance.

8. Use an advanced power strip for a home-office or entertainment cluster

An advanced power strip is most useful when several devices share a predictable usage pattern: for example, a television, streaming box, speakers, and game console, or a computer with monitors and peripherals. Its value comes from disconnecting selected outlets when a control device is off, or when a timer or occupancy feature determines that the cluster is idle.

A power strip does not make every connected device efficient, and ordinary surge protection alone does not necessarily eliminate standby consumption. Read the outlet labels and preserve continuous power for equipment that must stay connected, such as a router, medical device, refrigerator, security system, or other device whose operation depends on uninterrupted power. ENERGY STAR discusses connected home-energy systems that include plug-load monitoring or control as part of a broader efficiency strategy. 9. Apply removable window-insulation film to visibly drafty windows

Clear shrink film can be a seasonal, low-commitment way to improve comfort around older windows. It is best viewed as a temporary interior air-barrier measure—not as a replacement for a properly selected and installed replacement window. DOE notes that operable-window air leakage depends substantially on the quality and condition of the weatherstripping and seals. Review DOE’s information on window types and air leakage.

Repair or replace damaged seals first when practical. Follow the kit’s instructions for cleaning, tape placement, heating, removal, and compatible surfaces. Do not cover an emergency-egress window in a way that prevents it from opening quickly, and be cautious on painted, delicate, or deteriorated frames where removal could damage the finish.

Film can improve perceived comfort without solving every source of heat loss. If the glass is cracked, the frame leaks water, or the sash cannot lock and close properly, address that defect rather than relying on film alone.

10. Add a door sweep to the bottom of an exterior door

A door sweep targets the gap beneath an exterior door. It pairs well with perimeter weatherstripping: the sweep handles the bottom edge while weatherstripping handles the sides and top. Choose an adjustable, screw-on, or other product suitable for the door and threshold rather than assuming a universal fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the door width and bottom clearance. The sweep should contact the threshold enough to limit drafts without dragging so heavily that the door will not close, latch, or seal. Check the result from inside and outside, and make sure the threshold itself is not loose or damaged.

Air sealing can improve comfort and reduce heating and cooling losses, but there is no fixed savings amount for one door without a home-specific assessment. DOE’s broader air-sealing guidance supports the rationale, while the actual result depends on the size of the gap, wind exposure, climate, and the condition of the rest of the enclosure. Read DOE’s overview of why air sealing matters.

11. Replace expired or missing smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms

This is the one recommendation on the list that should be treated primarily as a life-safety upgrade. Replace missing, expired, recalled, or unreliable alarms even if they do not reduce utility bills. CPSC recommends smoke alarms on every level, outside sleeping areas, and inside bedrooms. It recommends carbon-monoxide alarms on each level and outside sleeping areas. Always follow local code and the alarm manufacturer’s instructions, which may impose additional requirements.

CPSC recommends monthly testing and annual battery replacement unless the alarm has a sealed 10-year battery. Smoke alarms more than 10 years old should be replaced. Review CPSC’s current fire-safety guidance, check for recalls, and confirm whether your home requires interconnected, hardwired, battery-powered, or combination units.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not select a particular brand as universally best. The correct choice depends on the home’s existing wiring, required locations, local code, alarm type, and manufacturer instructions. Test every installed unit after installation.

How to choose the right project for your budget

Usually under $25

  • A single LED bulb or small bulb replacement.
  • A faucet aerator, if the faucet is compatible.
  • Basic weatherstripping for one small gap.
  • One tube of caulk when a caulk gun is already available.

Often $25–$75

  • A showerhead, installation supplies, or a small fixture retrofit.
  • Several outlet gaskets and a caulk gun.
  • A window-insulation film kit for one or more windows.
  • An advanced power strip for a defined equipment cluster.
  • A door sweep plus perimeter weatherstripping.

Potentially up to $100

  • A group of smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms.
  • A higher-quality or specialty smart thermostat on sale.
  • Several LED bulbs or a larger air-sealing materials bundle.

These are planning ranges, not guaranteed retail prices. Quantity, shipping, regional availability, required tools, hardwired installation, and rebates can change the total. A smart thermostat may exceed $100 without an incentive, while several of the other projects may cost much less.

Compatibility and safety checklist

  • Measure first: Check door width, gap size, window dimensions, faucet threads, shower connections, and fixture clearances.
  • Verify certifications: Look for WaterSense or ENERGY STAR where the recommendation calls for it; a generic “eco” claim is not the same thing.
  • Check the application: WaterSense bathroom-faucet guidance does not automatically apply to every kitchen or public faucet.
  • Check HVAC wiring: Confirm C-wire, adapter, heat-pump, dual-fuel, millivolt, and proprietary-system requirements before buying a thermostat.
  • Preserve safety openings: Do not seal combustion-air openings, required ventilation, window weep holes, or emergency egress.
  • Shut off power: Turn off the breaker before removing outlet or switch plates and stop when wiring appears damaged or unfamiliar.
  • Protect continuous loads: Keep routers, medical equipment, refrigerators, security devices, and other required loads off switched power-strip outlets.
  • Follow code and instructions: Alarm placement, hardwiring, interconnection, HVAC installation, and plumbing work may be governed by local requirements.
  • Check incentives: Search by ZIP code and confirm the current eligibility, deadline, product requirements, and whether the rebate applies at purchase or afterward.

What these upgrades cannot promise

Each project has a sensible use case, but none guarantees a specific bill reduction or payback period. LED savings depend on the old lamp and hours of use. Air-sealing materials help most where there is a real leakage path and are ineffective or harmful when they block a required opening. Water savings depend on fixture use and local rates. Smart-thermostat savings vary by climate, equipment, occupancy, and behavior. Window film performs differently depending on the window and installation. EPA and ENERGY STAR both caution that product and regional results vary. Read ENERGY STAR’s smart-thermostat FAQ for those limitations.

The practical approach is to fix the clearest problem first, buy only what matches the measured condition, and track comfort, water use, or energy use where possible. If a draft, wiring defect, plumbing leak, unsafe alarm layout, or HVAC compatibility issue is beyond a small DIY repair, have the underlying condition evaluated rather than layering a cheap product over it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every upgrade on this list cost less than $100?

No. The $100 figure is a working budget for materials for one location or a single device. Quantity, tools, installation, local pricing, rebates, and hardwired requirements can raise the total. Smart thermostats in particular have a broad price range, so confirm current pricing and incentives.

Which upgrade should I do first?

Start with the most frequently used or most obvious problem: high-use incandescent bulbs, a confirmed draft, an inefficient bathroom fixture, or missing or expired alarms. Safety issues take priority over energy or convenience improvements.

Can I install a smart thermostat myself?

Only if the thermostat and HVAC system are confirmed compatible and you can safely identify the low-voltage wiring. Check for C-wire or adapter requirements and special treatment for heat pumps, dual-fuel, millivolt, and proprietary systems. Use an HVAC professional when the equipment or wiring is uncertain.

Are low-flow showerheads uncomfortable?

They can feel different from an older high-flow model, and the result depends on water pressure and the product. WaterSense models must meet performance requirements for spray force, coverage, and pressure compensation, but no fixture will feel identical in every home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use caulk or weatherstripping for a draft?

Use weatherstripping around moving parts such as doors and operable windows. Use caulk around stationary joints such as trim, baseboards, window frames, and suitable penetrations. Do not seal weep holes, combustion-air openings, or required ventilation.

The Bottom Line

The best sub-$100 home upgrade is the one that addresses a real, measurable problem without creating a compatibility or safety issue. Replace the bulbs and fixtures you use most, seal verified drafts with the correct material, check HVAC compatibility before buying a thermostat, and treat smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms as a priority regardless of energy savings. Prices and rebates change, so verify current product details before purchase.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
