The chapel was completed in 1927 and dedicated in 1928 at the north end of the Quad. Those dates explain why 1926 can be used as a centennial-era frame in 2026 while a specific groundbreaking date should not be stated as settled fact.
What happened in the 1920s
The Memorial Chapel emerged as part of a major University of Redlands expansion that also created the Quad and added residence halls. The City of Redlands’ historic-resources report identifies these projects as the additions that formed the heart of the campus seen today. The university’s official history places the chapel’s dedication in 1928 and describes it as a focal point at the north end of the Quad.

A project history records completion in 1927. Taken together, the available records establish a construction campaign during the 1920s, completion in 1927 and dedication in 1928. They do not establish an exact groundbreaking day. The university’s historical overview is available at redlands.edu/about/history, while the project account is at Tilden-Coil’s University of Redlands Chapel project history.
Construction, completion and dedication
| Milestone | What the records support |
|---|---|
| Construction context | 1920s campus expansion, including the Quad and Memorial Chapel |
| 1926 frame | A reasonable “100 years ago” context for 2026, but not a documented exact start date |
| Completion | 1927 |
| Dedication | 1928, at the north end of the Quad |
| Seating capacity | 1,500 people |
This distinction matters because “built in 1926,” “completed in 1927” and “dedicated in 1928” describe different milestones. A centennial story can accurately place readers in the 1926 construction era without converting that context into a claim about a particular groundbreaking ceremony or day.

Who designed the chapel?
The surviving architectural descriptions point to a team and a broader campus plan rather than a single, unqualified designer attribution. The Pacific Coast Architecture Database says the chapel’s design was modeled on 18th-century Colonial American Baptist churches and credits Norman Foote Marsh with the campus master plan. The City of Redlands report identifies local architect Herbert J. Powell among the designers working on buildings from the era.
That evidence supports describing the chapel as a Colonial American Baptist-inspired building developed within Marsh’s campus planning and the period’s local architectural work. It does not support naming one person as the chapel’s sole architect without a more specific building record. Architectural background and the database record are available from the Pacific Coast Architecture Database; the municipal context appears in the City of Redlands historic-resources report.

Why the chapel mattered to the new campus
The building was planned as more than a sanctuary. Its project history describes it as a campus gathering space, a place of worship and a public face of the university. With room for 1,500 people, it could accommodate large university occasions as well as religious services. The university’s catalog describes major-event use alongside voluntary weekly worship, a combination that helps explain the chapel’s continuing central position in campus life.

What is inside the stained-glass windows?
The best-documented interior feature is the Christ Window. A Redlands Fortnightly Club presentation reports that the window contains 52 characters assembled from 3,500 individual pieces of glass. Those figures describe the documented composition of that window, not a total count for every pane in the chapel.
The stained glass is consequently part of the building’s historical significance as well as its visual appeal. Visitors looking at the window should understand it as a large narrative work whose many figures and thousands of glass pieces were designed to be read within a place used for worship and public ceremony. The presentation is documented at Redlands Fortnightly Club’s “Colors of Heaven” program.

How the Memorial Chapel is used today
The chapel remains a flexible university venue. Current descriptions associate it with major events and voluntary weekly worship services, preserving the dual purpose established when it was built: a religious setting and a common room for the university community. Its 1,500-seat scale also makes it suitable for ceremonies and other gatherings that require a substantial indoor audience.
