Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A useful electronics starter kit is a small, well-chosen stock of parts you can reuse—not a box full of unfamiliar components. These ten categories cover common low-voltage projects on a breadboard, from LED indicators and button inputs to sensor experiments and switched loads. They are versatile starting points, not parts every project needs: check each component’s voltage, current, pinout and package against its datasheet before connecting it.
How to choose a starter inventory
Prioritize components that work across several project types, are available in breadboard-friendly through-hole packages, and help teach core circuit concepts. Buy a few common values in useful quantities rather than one of every obscure value. An assortment can reduce friction, but verify labels and ratings; a low price is not proof that every part is suitable or accurately identified.

1. Resistors
Resistors limit current, divide voltage, set bias conditions and establish defined logic states. They are among the most reusable parts in a prototype box. A practical through-hole assortment might include 100 Ω, 220 Ω, 330 Ω, 470 Ω, 1 kΩ, 2.2 kΩ, 4.7 kΩ, 10 kΩ, 22 kΩ, 47 kΩ, 100 kΩ, 220 kΩ and 1 MΩ, with several pieces of frequently used values.

- Electronics component kit: This is a great assortment of components for electronic professionals or enthusiasts
- Typical uses: limiting LED current, pull-up or pull-down inputs, voltage dividers, transistor drive networks, and resistor-capacitor timing or filters.
- Check: resistance, tolerance, power rating and package. A ¼ W part is common in small-signal breadboard work, but calculate resistor dissipation for the actual circuit rather than assuming that rating is always enough.
- Avoid: reading color bands by guesswork or treating a voltage divider as a precision supply. High-value dividers can be affected by input leakage and noise.
DigiKey’s component definitions describe fixed resistors as components used to regulate current. The useful value depends on the circuit: an LED resistor, for example, is chosen from supply voltage, LED forward voltage and desired current, not from a universal rule.
2. Capacitors
Capacitors store charge and help bypass supply noise, smooth voltage, couple or filter signals, and set timing. Keep both ceramic and electrolytic types: they serve overlapping but not identical roles.
Ceramic capacitors
Stock 100 pF, 1 nF, 10 nF, 100 nF (0.1 µF) and 1 µF values. A 100 nF ceramic is a common bypass choice close to an IC’s supply pins, subject to that IC’s datasheet. A marking such as “104” commonly decodes to 100 nF using a picofarad-based code; markings vary, so verify unfamiliar parts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsElectrolytic capacitors
Useful starter values include 10 µF, 47 µF, 100 µF, 220 µF and 470 µF for bulk smoothing or short-term energy storage. These capacitors are polarized: observe the marked negative lead and never exceed the voltage rating. Reverse installation can damage the component.
- Check: capacitance, voltage rating, polarity, lead spacing and, where relevant, equivalent series resistance and temperature behavior.
- Avoid: assuming ceramics and electrolytics can replace one another in every circuit, or placing a large capacitor across a supply without considering inrush current.
Adafruit’s passive-component listings and example parts list show the kinds of capacitors used in breadboard projects.
3. Diodes
A diode conducts preferentially in one direction. Diodes can rectify AC, steer signals, clamp voltage, protect against reverse polarity, or provide a path for current from an inductive load when a switch turns off.
- 1N4148-type small-signal diode: useful for low-current signal switching.
- 1N4001–1N4007-family rectifier: a general-purpose rectifier example, not a universal choice for fast switching.
- 1N5817- or 1N5819-type Schottky diode: an example where lower forward voltage or fast switching may matter; confirm its ratings.
- Zener diode: useful for learning simple voltage clamping, with voltage and power selected for the circuit.
Check forward current, reverse-voltage rating, forward voltage, reverse recovery and package limits. A diode’s forward drop is not a fixed 0.7 V under all conditions. For a relay or other inductive load, use suitable flyback protection unless the driver already provides it. Adafruit’s component category and SparkFun’s diode listings cover common diode types.

4. LEDs
Discrete LEDs provide visible status or illumination and make circuit changes easy to observe. Start with a few red, green and yellow 3 mm or 5 mm LEDs; blue and white LEDs, an RGB device, or addressable LEDs can follow when a project calls for them. The LED’s longer lead is often the anode, but check the package markings or datasheet rather than relying on lead length alone.
Use a current-limiting resistor unless the LED module explicitly includes current regulation. For a basic series circuit:
R = (V_supply − V_LED) / I_LED
For an illustrative 5 V supply, a red LED with an approximately 2 V forward voltage, and a 10 mA target, the calculation gives 300 Ω; 330 Ω is a nearby standard value. This example does not establish a safe current for every LED or microcontroller output. Check the LED’s datasheet and the board’s pin-current limits. Different colors and devices have different forward voltages.
Adafruit describes LEDs among its component categories, and DigiKey provides a component definition. Addressable LEDs simplify animations but do not replace ordinary LEDs for learning polarity, current limiting and basic switching.
5. Transistors and MOSFETs
Transistors can switch a load or amplify a signal. They are useful when a control pin cannot safely supply the current a motor, relay, solenoid, buzzer or LED load needs.
Bipolar junction transistors
A small NPN device such as a PN2222A or 2N2222-type part is a common switching example; a PNP part such as a 2N3906 can introduce opposite-polarity arrangements. A BJT’s operation depends on base current. Check its pinout, current and voltage ratings, and power dissipation—similar-looking packages may have different lead arrangements.
MOSFETs
An N-channel MOSFET is often useful as a low-side switch. Choose one with on-resistance specified at the gate voltage your controller actually supplies, such as 3.3 V or 5 V. Gate-threshold voltage alone does not show that a MOSFET will be fully on at that voltage. A gate pull-down can keep it off during startup; a gate resistor may be appropriate depending on the circuit.

Do not drive a motor directly from a microcontroller pin. Use a suitable transistor or motor-driver circuit, share ground between the controller and load supply where the circuit requires it, and provide flyback protection for inductive loads. Check the transistor’s thermal limits and the load’s startup or stall current. Adafruit’s transistor and MOSFET category includes examples used in maker projects.

A potentiometer is a manually adjustable resistor with a movable wiper. Wired across supply and ground, its wiper can provide an adjustable voltage-divider output for a microcontroller input, threshold experiment or analog control. Wired as a variable resistor, connect the wiper appropriately for the circuit; leaving it without a reliable connection can make the adjustment intermittent.
A 10 kΩ linear potentiometer is a versatile starting point. A 100 kΩ part is useful in some higher-impedance timing or signal circuits; lower values may suit circuits that need a lower source impedance. Check taper (linear or logarithmic), power rating, mounting style and breadboard lead spacing. A trim potentiometer is useful for calibration inside a project; a panel potentiometer is better for frequent user adjustment. Adafruit lists trim components and general components.
7. Pushbuttons and switches
Momentary tactile buttons are useful for reset, trigger and menu inputs; slide, toggle and other switches can select modes or control power when their ratings suit the job. A digital input should not be left floating. Give it a defined default state with a pull-up or pull-down resistor, or use a microcontroller’s internal pull-up when supported and appropriate.
Many four-pin tactile switches have two pairs of pins internally connected. The two sides connect to each other only while the button is pressed. Check the part’s drawing or use a multimeter’s continuity mode to identify the pairs before wiring it across a breadboard gap. Button contacts can bounce, producing several rapid transitions from one press; debounce in software or hardware when the application needs one clean event. A small tactile button is not a substitute for a load-rated power switch. Adafruit’s example parts list includes a tactile switch, and SparkFun lists buttons and switches.
8. Integrated circuits
An integrated circuit (IC) packages a particular function; “IC” does not mean interchangeable. A useful starter choice depends on the project: a timer for pulses, logic gates for digital operations, an op amp for analog signals, or a motor driver for a load. Select a few functions you expect to use rather than buying unidentified chips by package shape.
A timer as a learning example
A 555 timer can be configured for monostable or astable operation, with resistor-capacitor networks setting timing. Variants differ: Texas Instruments specifies the LM555 for 4.5–16 V, while the TLC555 and LMC555 have their own supply and electrical characteristics. For the LMC555 monostable circuit, TI gives t = 1.1 × R × C. Use the exact device’s datasheet and circuit, not a generic assumption about all “555” parts. See TI’s pages for the LM555, TLC555 and LMC555, along with the LMC555 datasheet.

What to verify for any IC
- Supply range, logic thresholds and output-current limits.
- Pinout and pin-1 orientation, package and whether it fits the breadboard or requires a breakout.
- Required bypass capacitors and whether unused inputs need defined logic levels.
- For an op amp, input and output range, load capability and whether the circuit needs dual or negative rails.
Do not assume a 5 V IC works reliably at 3.3 V, or that a 5 V-powered IC can safely receive a 3.3 V or 5 V signal without checking its thresholds and absolute maximum ratings. TI notes that unused TLC555 inputs should be tied to an appropriate logic level to avoid false triggering.
9. Sensors
Sensors turn a physical condition into an electrical signal. There is no single sensor every maker needs: choose by project. A photoresistor or phototransistor suits a light experiment; a thermistor or temperature sensor suits temperature measurement; robotics projects may use distance, reflectance, inertial or magnetic sensors. A digital breakout may communicate over I²C or SPI, while a simple sensor may provide an analog voltage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before wiring a sensor or module, check its supply voltage, output range, analog or digital behavior, interface, pull-up needs and calibration requirements. A breakout board may include a regulator, pull-ups or level shifting, but do not assume it does. In particular, verify whether its output is safe for a 5 V input and whether a 3.3 V sensor can tolerate a 5 V pull-up. Adafruit notes the relevance of 3.3 V logic across many maker components in its component listings. For project ideas and compatible parts, use the relevant manufacturer documentation and the sensor’s datasheet.
10. Power-management and protection components
Power problems can make a sound signal circuit unreliable or damage parts. Stock power components according to the board and loads you plan to use: regulated 5 V or 3.3 V supplies, a regulator or buck converter, suitable connectors, decoupling capacitors, and protection such as a fuse or resettable fuse. A boost or buck-boost converter is useful only when the input and output requirements call for it.
- Check input and output voltage, continuous current, polarity and connector type. Confirm the supply can handle the load, including motor or other startup current.
- For linear regulators, consider dropout voltage and heat from the voltage drop at the expected current.
- For switching converters, consider efficiency, heat, noise and the module’s actual current limits.
- For protection, check fuse ratings, reverse-polarity arrangements and any voltage or current limits imposed by the board.
Use isolated, professionally enclosed, certified supplies for mains-to-low-voltage power. Do not prototype directly from mains electricity. A USB source is convenient but should not be treated as a precision or unlimited-current bench supply. SparkFun’s catalog, DigiKey’s beginner guide and Adafruit’s power-supply parts list show common power and prototyping components.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What you need besides components
These items are essential to prototyping, but they are tools or infrastructure rather than electronic components.
- Solderless breadboard: convenient for temporary, low-voltage circuits. Contacts can be intermittent, and breadboards are poor choices for high current, high frequency, high voltage or mechanical stress.
- Jumper wires: stock male-to-male, male-to-female and female-to-female leads as needed, plus solid-core wire for custom lengths.
- Multimeter: at minimum, continuity, resistance and DC-voltage functions are useful. Follow the meter’s instructions for current measurement; an ammeter connected across a supply can cause a short.
- Suitable power source: prefer a regulated, current-limited low-voltage supply when available. Match an adapter’s voltage, polarity, connector and current capability to the circuit.
- For a more permanent build: use perfboard or stripboard for a soldered prototype and a PCB for a finished design. Breakout boards can make fine-pitch ICs and sensors easier to use.
Power rails on breadboards may be split or interrupted, so check continuity before relying on a rail to carry power end to end.

Buy assortments or select parts individually?
Assortments make experimentation easier and often cover common resistor or ceramic-capacitor values. Their trade-off is that they may include parts you will not use, unclear labeling or components with unsuitable ratings. Start with a resistor assortment, a ceramic capacitor assortment and a curated set of electrolytics; buy active parts with traceable part numbers and datasheets when their exact performance matters. A very large kit is useful only if you can identify, label and store its contents.
Through-hole parts, surface-mount parts and modules
Through-hole components
Through-hole parts are generally easier to handle, identify, breadboard and hand-solder. Their advantage for early prototypes is convenience, not electrical superiority.
Surface-mount components
Surface-mount parts are often smaller and may be the only package available for a particular device. They can suit compact or production-like designs but are less convenient for direct breadboard experiments; use an appropriate breakout board when needed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Raw components and breakout modules
Raw components teach how a circuit works and provide design flexibility. Modules can speed up a prototype and may include supporting circuitry, but check whether they include regulation, level shifting, pull-ups or protection. A module is not automatically plug-and-play or suitable for a final compact design.
Check compatibility before powering up
Modern maker boards and sensors often use 3.3 V logic, while many familiar hobby circuits use 5 V. Similar-looking signal names do not guarantee electrical compatibility. Check each device’s input-high and input-low thresholds, absolute maximum input voltage and 5 V tolerance. Confirm where pull-ups connect and use a suitable level shifter when required. A 3.3 V output may not meet a 5 V input’s high-level threshold, and a 5 V output may exceed a 3.3 V device’s input limit.
Before applying power, confirm the supply voltage and polarity, component pinouts, current path, common ground where required, and the ratings of the load and driver. In particular, do not rely on visual appearance to identify a transistor, diode or IC pinout. Keep motors, relays and other inductive loads off microcontroller pins; size the driver and its protection for the load.
