Many recent VIZIO TVs can do much more than the basic remote suggests: your phone can become a keyboard and remote, the TV may accept AirPlay or Chromecast, and accessibility and privacy controls are tucked into settings. Features and menu names vary by model, year, firmware, and whether the set uses SmartCast or VIZIO OS, so keep your model number handy and confirm unfamiliar paths in its manual.
Find the model number on the rear label or, on supported sets, under Menu > System > System Information. Also check your home screen and remote: a microphone, CC, or PIC button can determine which shortcuts are available.

1. Use your phone as a remote—and a keyboard
The official app is currently called VIZIO Mobile; older manuals and sets may refer to SmartCast Mobile. On compatible TVs, it can provide power, volume and mute, input switching, playback controls, voice search, casting, and access to some settings. Phone text entry is especially useful for passwords, email addresses, and long searches that are tedious to enter with arrow keys. Available controls vary by app version and TV.

- Install and open the VIZIO Mobile app, then open its device selector.
- Choose your TV and enter the four-digit code shown on the television.
- Use the touchscreen remote, keyboard, input selector, or voice controls.

If the TV does not appear, make sure both devices are on the same network—not an isolated guest network—update the app, check Wi-Fi stability, and try again. Temporarily disable a VPN, then restart the phone, TV, and router if discovery still fails. If the TV is offline and you have no working remote, the app may not be able to pair; use the TV’s onboard controls or a compatible replacement remote.

2. Cast or mirror from a phone, tablet, or computer
Casting sends supported app content to the TV; the phone often remains a playback controller. Screen mirroring duplicates what is on the device’s display. Opening an app directly on the TV is different again and does not require a phone after launch.
Chromecast built-in
- Connect the TV and casting device to the same local network.
- Open an app that supports Chromecast and tap its Cast icon.
- Select the VIZIO TV and start playback.
AirPlay 2
On compatible models, Apple devices can send supported photos, video, music, presentations, or app content to the TV using AirPlay. VIZIO manuals describe both AirPlay 2 and Chromecast built-in, but support is not universal: check your specific model’s manual or product page rather than assuming it has both. Some apps restrict casting, and AirPlay and Chromecast are separate technologies.
If a TV is missing from the device list, verify that both devices are on the same non-guest network, check whether the feature is enabled and supported, and restart the TV. VPNs, router isolation settings, or an app’s own restrictions can block discovery. If the TV’s built-in platform lacks an app or remains unreliable, an external streaming device is an alternative—not a prerequisite for features your set already supports. 3. Make WatchFree+ easier to browse
WatchFree+ is a free, ad-supported channel service, not a complete replacement for cable or paid streaming: its lineup does not guarantee every local, premium, or sports channel. VIZIO describes hundreds of channels on TV and advertises 300+ live channels in its mobile app; channel counts and availability can change.
VIZIO’s current app instructions offer a few useful controls:
- Tap the filter icon below the video and above the guide to open Category Jump, which lists 24 channel categories.
- To favorite a mobile channel, swipe right on its channel icon and tap the heart.
- Mobile favorites do not automatically transfer to the TV’s separate favorites list.
- Depending on availability, the app can launch WatchFree+ and show supported live content on mobile.
The app also lists age-based WatchFree+ controls: Family Friendly (G, PG, TV-Y, TV-Y7, TV-G, TV-PG), Teens (PG-13 and TV-14), and Adult (all content). These are the categories VIZIO documents for the app; they are not a substitute for parental controls in every other streaming service. Details are on the VIZIO Mobile page.
4. Choose the right kind of voice control
“Voice control” can mean several different things. A compatible remote or the VIZIO Mobile app may offer VIZIO Voice for search and supported TV commands. VIZIO’s mobile instructions also describe linking supported sets with Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home for functions such as power, volume, or input control. Compatibility and individual commands depend on the model, account setup, region, and software; support for voice control does not mean every command or app launch will work.

A V-Series manual gives this path when a compatible assistant cannot turn the TV on:
Menu > System > Power Mode > Quick Start
Quick Start keeps the TV in a more responsive standby state and may use more standby energy than an energy-saving mode. It is not available or labeled identically on every model. If voice power-on fails, also check TV pairing, the linked accounts, the remote’s microphone and pairing status, and whether your model supports that specific command. VIZIO’s mobile instructions and VIZIO Voice announcement describe the respective features; the announcement dates to 2021, so it is not proof of identical support on every current set.

5. Find accessibility tools and remote shortcuts
VIZIO lists accessibility options under Menu > Accessibility, though older interfaces may differ. Depending on the model and software, the menu can include closed captions, video description for selected content, Talk Back text-to-speech for settings changes, speech rate (Slow, Normal, or Fast), and Zoom Mode up to 200%.
- Press CC to toggle captions; on documented remotes, holding CC for five seconds opens the accessibility menu.
- On remotes with a PIC button, holding it for five seconds toggles Talk Back.
- On compatible microphone remotes, documented commands include “Enable Talk Back,” “Enable Zoom,” “Turn on Closed Captions,” and “Enable Subtitles.”
Shortcuts depend on the remote layout and model. Do not look for a PIC or microphone button if your remote does not have one. VIZIO’s accessibility information describes these options and shortcuts.
6. Review the Viewing Data setting
On a V-Series set documented by VIZIO, the path is Menu > Admin & Privacy > Viewing Data, where you can turn that feature on or off. Menu names may change with software updates. Turning off Viewing Data is a specific privacy choice, not a switch that necessarily stops all account, app, advertising, or network data collection. Streaming services have their own policies, too; review the privacy notice and controls for your model and region. The V-Series manual documents this menu path.
7. Check the actual signal, then choose a picture mode
When a show claims to be 4K or HDR, press INFO during playback on documented V-Series models to see the incoming resolution and video format. The display may identify Dolby Vision, HDR10, or HLG when applicable; some supported models also expose this information in the VIZIO Mobile app. The exact display varies. This tells you what signal the TV reports receiving—not whether the source has a high bitrate, good mastering, or pleasing picture quality.
For a quick picture adjustment, open Menu > Picture. VIZIO documents Calibrated as a starting preset on V-Series sets; other models may offer filmmaker-oriented modes or different labels. Bright Vivid or Sports presets can exaggerate color and edge enhancement. There is no universal best setting: room light, taste, and available controls matter. Settings may also be separate for SDR, HDR, Dolby Vision, or individual inputs, so make adjustments while using the source and format you want to change.
VIZIO’s V5-series product guidance says compatible sets can detect gameplay over HDMI and optimize input lag, response time, and frame rate. Treat this as a V5-series claim, not a feature guaranteed on every VIZIO. Check your own manual for a Game or Gaming mode. Reducing image processing can lower input lag, but may change the image; detection can also depend on the console signal, HDMI input, and firmware. See VIZIO’s V5-series guide and V-Series manual.
8. Try Volume Leveling—with realistic expectations
Volume Leveling can reduce abrupt changes between programs, ads, or scenes. It is not the same as a dedicated dialogue-enhancement mode, and it can make films or music sound flatter by reducing perceived dynamics. If sound seems flat or dialogue is difficult to hear, check whether it is enabled and compare with it off. If a soundbar or receiver is connected, that device may apply its own processing; check its settings as well. VIZIO’s V-Series manual specifically flags Volume Leveling as a setting to check for flat sound or hard-to-hear dialogue.
9. Scan for over-the-air channels
You can use a compatible TV tuner with an antenna: connect the antenna by coaxial cable, open the channel menu, and choose Find Channels to scan. In the VIZIO Mobile app, the documented path is Menu Tab > SmartCast Devices > Your TV/Device Name > Channels > Find Channels. Channel availability depends on local broadcast coverage and antenna placement, not the TV brand. The path may vary by model; consult the V-Series manual.
