The Yale Smart Lock with Matter is a keypad deadbolt built for Google Home, using Matter over Thread rather than the older Nest Connect setup. Yale lists it at a $189.99 MSRP. It is not a phone-only lock: Google Home setup and remote control require a compatible Matter hub and Thread border router, plus working Wi-Fi and internet. If you already own a supported Google device, the lock may be a straightforward upgrade; if not, include that hardware in your total cost.
What the Yale Smart Lock with Matter is
Announced by Yale on March 28, 2025, this is a complete electronic deadbolt with an exterior keypad, interior thumb-turn assembly, physical key backup, adjustable deadbolt and DoorSense sensor that detects whether the door is ajar. Yale and Google position it as a next-generation lock designed for Google Home, not as a software update for the older Nest × Yale Lock. The new and old locks use different connectivity architectures; owning the older model does not mean it can be upgraded to Matter. Yale’s announcement and Google’s Nest × Yale support page describe the distinction.
Google gives this lock its “Preferred Product” positioning for Google Home. That is a more specific Google-oriented designation than basic “Works with Google Home” compatibility, but it does not mean every feature is exclusive to this lock or that other Matter platforms expose the same controls.
Matter over Thread: what you need at home
Matter is the smart-home control standard; Thread is the low-power wireless network this lock uses. In practical terms, the lock communicates over Thread rather than connecting directly to household Wi-Fi. A compatible device in the home acts as the Matter controller and Thread border router, linking the lock to Google Home:

Yale lock → Thread network → Google Matter hub/controller → Google Home app
Google identifies these compatible devices: Google TV Streamer (4K), Nest Hub Max, Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Wifi Pro. Do not assume an ordinary Google Home speaker or an older Nest speaker is sufficient simply because it has Google branding. Verify that your device is on Google’s compatible-device list.
Remote access also depends on a working internet connection and Wi-Fi, in addition to the compatible Matter hub and Thread border router. Matter does not make remote control independent of the home network. If you lack a compatible Google device, that may add to the $189.99 lock price. You do not use the Nest Connect architecture required by the older Nest × Yale Lock, but you do still need the appropriate Matter-and-Thread equipment for Google Home operation.

What you can do in Google Home
Google and Yale advertise remote locking and unlocking, guest passcode management, lock and unlock activity notifications and activity history, auto-lock settings, and Vacation Mode, which disables the keypad. The lock is also designed to work alongside Nest Doorbell products in Google Home; the doorbell is sold separately. Check the current product listing for feature details, and do not assume a particular doorbell-triggered automation or identical controls in every supported ecosystem.
The lock also supports the Yale app. Matter may allow use with other supported smart-home ecosystems, but platform support can differ: guest-code scheduling, DoorSense information, alerts and automations may not appear in the same way everywhere. Yale says Matter itself has no associated fees; that statement should not be read as a guarantee about every service or feature any platform may offer in the future. Entry, battery life and finishes
You can operate the lock with a keypad code, the Google Home app, the Yale app or the physical key. The key is a useful fallback if batteries run down or app access is unavailable. Google’s U.S. listing says the package includes four AA alkaline batteries, the keypad, interior lock, DoorSense sensor, strike plate, key, adjustable deadbolt and manual. Listed finishes are Snow, Matte Black and Ash; the Google Home feature page described Ash as coming soon, so check current regional availability rather than assuming every finish is in stock.

Yale and Google claim up to 12 months of battery life, not a guaranteed service interval. Usage, temperature, wireless conditions and a bolt that has to fight a misaligned door can all affect battery consumption. Monitor the battery status and keep the physical key somewhere accessible. Google lists the lock at 0.88 inches long, 2.56 inches wide and 5.38 inches high, and a weight of 3 pounds; confirm measurements and clearance against your door before purchase. Check the door before ordering
The lock includes an adjustable deadbolt, but that does not establish that it fits every door or existing bore. Door thickness, backset, bore and edge-bore dimensions, as well as interior and exterior clearance, must meet Yale’s current installation requirements. Review the current Yale installation manual and fit template before buying; the available product specifications alone are not a complete fit checklist. A retrofit lock that preserves existing exterior hardware may be a better category for someone who does not want to replace the deadbolt assembly.
Physical alignment matters as much as wireless setup. The deadbolt should extend and retract freely with the door both open and closed. If it rubs the strike plate or door frame, the motor may strain, the lock may fail to latch reliably, and battery life may suffer. Correct the door or strike-plate alignment rather than relying on stronger batteries or repeated app commands.

Installation and setup
- Check the door against Yale’s current fit guide and confirm the bolt moves freely before installing the electronics.
- Install the adjustable deadbolt, exterior keypad, interior assembly, strike plate and DoorSense sensor according to Yale’s instructions. Insert the four AA batteries.
- Use the Yale Home app to complete the lock’s initial setup and follow its prompts.
- Confirm that a compatible Google Matter hub and Thread border router are online, in the home where the lock will be used, and placed within reliable Thread range.
- Add the lock to Google Home using the Matter setup code supplied with the lock or provided during setup. Menu names can change with app updates, so follow the current in-app flow.
- Calibrate and test the lock. Check operation with the door open and closed, then test keypad access, the physical key, app control and remote control before relying on it.
- Create owner and guest codes and verify the access schedule you intend to use.
Yale’s Matter setup guidance emphasizes using a border router associated with the same ecosystem as the app—for example, a second-generation Nest Hub for Google Home. If Matter pairing stalls, check that you are using the right ecosystem and home/account, that the Thread border router is available, and that the setup code is valid. A lock already commissioned to another ecosystem may also need attention before it can be added as intended.
If the lock appears offline
Separate local access from network access before troubleshooting. First try the keypad and physical key. If local operation works, check battery condition and whether the bolt is binding. Then check that the Google hub and Thread border router are online and that Wi-Fi and internet are available for remote access. Reopen the Yale and Google Home apps and check their device status. Avoid factory-resetting until you have recorded necessary access codes and account or Matter setup information.

Is it worth buying?
This lock makes the most sense for a Google Home household that already has a compatible Thread border router and wants a full keypad deadbolt, physical-key fallback, guest codes and Google-managed activity features. It is also worth considering when replacing a conventional deadbolt and the door meets Yale’s fit requirements.
It is less compelling if you would need to buy the required hub solely for this lock, expect remote access to work with only a phone, need a retrofit installation that preserves existing exterior hardware, or rely on advanced features in Apple Home, Alexa or SmartThings without first confirming their support. For a Nest × Yale owner, it is a distinct new product—not an automatic replacement requirement—and the existing lock uses Nest Connect rather than this Matter-over-Thread design.
At $189.99 MSRP, the core decision is whether Google Home integration and the included keypad-and-key deadbolt justify the price plus any missing ecosystem hardware. Check current U.S. pricing and availability before ordering; regional stock, colors and supported services can vary.
