Xiaomi’s Smart Camera C700 is an indoor pan-and-tilt security camera with an 8MP sensor and 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) video. Announced in China in May 2024, it combines HDR, local AI detection, a retractable physical privacy shield, Wi-Fi 6 and microSD/NAS storage. Its headline specifications are substantial, but availability, app support and features can vary by region—and the camera is not an outdoor model.

Specifications are from Xiaomi’s product page and its C700 FAQ. They describe listed capabilities, not independent performance tests.
Does 8MP mean the C700 records 4K?
Yes: Xiaomi lists a maximum resolution of 3840 × 2160, the standard 4K UHD frame size. An 8MP pixel count is in the range needed for that resolution. Xiaomi also describes a five-element optical lens and an F1.6 aperture.

Resolution alone does not determine how clear or useful security footage will be. Lens and sensor performance, lighting, compression, frame rate and image processing all matter; the reviewed specifications do not provide independent measurements of these factors, a video bitrate or detection accuracy. Treat “4K” as the camera’s stated output resolution, not a guarantee of lossless or cinema-quality footage.

HDR: useful in backlight, but not at night
HDR is designed to retain detail in both bright and shadowed parts of a high-contrast scene—for example, when a bright window is behind someone in the room. Xiaomi notes that ordinary mode may look brighter, so HDR is most useful when strong backlighting is a problem rather than as an always-on improvement.
To enable it, Xiaomi’s stated path is Xiaomi Home/Mi Home app → select the C700 → three-dot menu → Camera settings → Image settings → HDR. HDR does not work during night vision or other black-and-white modes. See Xiaomi’s HDR instructions for the stated controls and limitation.
What the local AI does—and does not mean
Xiaomi lists local human detection and motion tracking, cat and dog detection and tracking, crying-baby detection, loud-noise detection (with examples such as a baby crying or an object shattering), and gesture recognition for initiating a call. After following movement, the camera can return to its original position. Xiaomi says local processing is intended to improve responsiveness and reduce false alarms, but no independent accuracy results are available in the cited material.

“Local AI” is not the same as “nothing leaves the camera.” Remote viewing, notifications, account functions and any cloud services can involve network communication. Buyers who need a fully offline system should not infer that capability from the local detection features alone.
Privacy: a physical shield, plus network protections
The C700’s lens retracts into the body when shielding is activated. That is a physical barrier, rather than only a software control that disables the image feed. Xiaomi also describes manual or app control and timed shielding options. The camera includes an MJA1 security chipset; Xiaomi says transmissions are encrypted and cloud data uses AES-128 encryption. Details are in the company’s security and privacy FAQ.
These measures address different risks: the retracting shield conceals the lens, local processing handles certain detection tasks on the device, and encryption protects data in transit or cloud storage as described by Xiaomi. They do not establish that every feature is cloud-free, nor do manufacturer specifications amount to an independent security audit.

Pan, tilt and night vision
The motorized head can pan 360° horizontally and tilt 110° vertically. Xiaomi describes panoramic, timed and fixed-point monitoring as options, alongside tracking. Movement broadens the area one camera can inspect, but it cannot see in every direction simultaneously. While it is facing one part of a room, an event elsewhere may be outside its view. If continuous coverage of multiple directions is important, consider a second fixed camera rather than assuming pan-and-tilt eliminates blind spots.
For darkness, Xiaomi specifies ten 940nm infrared illuminators and a night-vision distance of up to 10m—a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured result. The company also advertises full-color night vision in some low-light conditions. Color depends on ambient light; in darker conditions the camera can switch to black-and-white infrared mode, when HDR is unavailable.
Storage: microSD, NAS and cloud
The camera supports microSD cards from 8GB to 256GB, and Xiaomi lists NAS-related storage or transfer functions. Cards and NAS hardware are separate purchases. Xiaomi’s FAQ describes a microSD card as necessary for transferring historical recordings in the NAS workflow, so NAS support should not be mistaken for a guaranteed standalone network-video-recorder setup. The exact process can depend on firmware, app and network configuration; check the regional FAQ and model instructions before buying a NAS for this purpose.

Xiaomi cloud storage is another option, but the company says it must be paid for and activated. The cited material does not establish current plan prices or retention periods. Nor does it give a bitrate from which to estimate how long a card will hold 4K video, so a specific retention promise would be unreliable. Xiaomi says downloads from microSD or cloud are MP4 files; on Android it identifies the folder as Android/DCIM/device ID.
Formatting a card erases its stored videos. Xiaomi’s stated route is app → camera → three-dot menu → Manage storage → SD card status → Format SD card. Back up anything you need before formatting. Firmware updates are listed under app → camera → three-dot menu → Firmware update; menu names may differ by app version or region.
Setup and connectivity
Xiaomi lists dual-band Wi-Fi 6 on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Its claims about speed or lower latency versus older Wi-Fi are based on internal laboratory comparisons, not a guaranteed result in a particular home. The camera uses the Xiaomi Home/Mi Home app. In its setup instructions, Xiaomi specifies app version 9.4 or later: in the app, tap +, choose Scan, then hold the camera’s reset button for about seven seconds, until the indicator blinks orange. Before importing a camera, check its regional model, Xiaomi Home server region, app and firmware support, power-adapter compatibility, warranty and return terms, and availability of cloud services where you live. A product page on Xiaomi’s global site does not guarantee local retail stock or region-independent pairing.
Audio and calls
The C700 supports two-way voice calls and has a noise-canceling microphone. Xiaomi lists microphone pickup at up to 5m. Its gesture feature recognizes an “OK” gesture toward the camera to initiate a call to a phone. These are listed functions; the cited material does not provide independent tests of audio clarity or recognition reliability.
Announcement, price and availability
The C700 was announced for China in May 2024. Launch coverage reported a price of 349 yuan and sales beginning May 10, 2024; that is historical Chinese launch pricing, not a current U.S. price. Xiaomi now has a global product page, but that alone does not verify current availability, warranty coverage or feature parity in any particular country. Check Xiaomi’s local store or support site before purchasing.

Launch coverage also associated the camera with HyperOS Connect and Xiaomi smart-home automations. Xiaomi’s current global product information emphasizes Xiaomi Home/Mi Home and does not document every HyperOS integration for every region. Treat ecosystem automation support as market-, app- and firmware-dependent, not a universal feature guarantee. The launch report’s description of it as Xiaomi’s first 8MP indoor camera is a product-line claim, not evidence that it was the first such camera industry-wide.
Who is the C700 for?
It is most relevant to buyers seeking a feature-rich indoor camera, especially existing Xiaomi Home users who want 4K-class resolution, motorized viewing, a physical lens shield and local microSD or NAS options. Local detections may also appeal to people who want some AI functions processed on the camera.
It is a poor fit for outdoor entrances, yards or exposed porches: Xiaomi explicitly says outdoor installation is not recommended. It may also disappoint buyers who require a confirmed local warranty, guaranteed regional app compatibility, a wholly offline system, or simultaneous views of several areas. For any of those needs, verify the exact local model and service terms—or choose a camera system designed for the required installation and recording setup.
