The Xiaomi Pipi Lamp is a real, motorized desk lamp that uses a camera to recognize hand gestures, follow a hand with its moving head, and react with colored “mood” lighting. It is more compelling as an interactive desk gadget than as a proven work or reading lamp. Launched in China in 2023, it has no verified current global retail listing in the information available as of August 18, 2026, so importing one means accepting uncertainty about setup, privacy, warranty, and ongoing support.
Its “personality” is expressive behavior, not conversation or evidence of human-like understanding. If you want dependable task lighting, a conventional lamp is the safer choice. If you want an unusual Xiaomi-connected gadget and are comfortable with a camera-equipped device, the Pipi Lamp is more interesting—provided you can verify the seller and regional compatibility.
What is the Xiaomi Pipi Lamp?
The Xiaomi/Mijia Pipi Lamp (米家皮皮灯) is a smart desk lamp with a motorized head, an AI interaction camera, touch and gesture controls, and an indicator light Xiaomi describes as a mood light. It was introduced in China on April 18, 2023, through crowdfunding on Xiaomi YouPin at a launch price of 499 yuan. That is a historical China-market price, not a current US price or a reliable estimate of what an import costs today. Xiaomi’s launch coverage describes the camera, gesture recognition, hand-following movement, and emotional reactions; the product manual identifies the lamp’s physical components and mood-light function.
In practical terms, the camera detects a hand so the lamp can respond to gestures or move its head toward the hand. The device also uses movement and colored light to make those responses feel more animated. It is not simply a conventional lamp with a webcam attached, nor should it be mistaken for a general-purpose security camera.

What the camera does—and what is not established
Xiaomi’s launch description calls it an AI interaction camera and says it recognizes hand key points for low-latency gesture interaction. That recognition supports hand tracking: the lamp can detect a hand’s position and move its head to follow it. Xiaomi presented this as useful for activities such as drawing or model-building. The launch report supports those interaction functions.
That does not establish that the Pipi Lamp offers the features of a security camera. The available documentation does not verify remote live viewing, video recording, night vision, or two-way audio. Nor does the available evidence settle whether camera processing is local or cloud-based, whether images are stored, or whether the camera can be disabled independently of the lamp. Those are important questions to resolve for the specific hardware revision and app before putting one in a private room.
Xiaomi’s general privacy policy says data practices depend on the product, region, enabled features, and configuration. It describes possible categories of device, software, app-usage, diagnostic, and cloud-synchronization data across Xiaomi services, but it is not a Pipi Lamp-specific explanation of camera handling. Do not assume either that the lamp uploads video or that it never does.

The lamp’s personality is a set of visible reactions: the head moves, its mood light changes color, and it responds to touch or gestures. Xiaomi’s launch description lists states including calm, happy, sad, angry, surprised, disgusted, and fearful. The manual calls the indicator a mood light that uses different colors to express personality or emotional states during interaction.

That language describes an interface, not sentience. Xiaomi’s description says reactions are triggered by interaction and refers to an internal mood value crossing thresholds. It is reasonable to infer that this resembles preset responses or a rules-based state system, but the precise software architecture is not independently established. There is no basis to describe the lamp as conversational AI or as understanding a user’s feelings.
Whether the effect is charming or distracting will depend on how often the lamp reacts and whether those reactions can be limited. A launch-page demonstration can show novelty; it cannot establish whether the animations remain appealing after weeks on a desk. Buyers should check whether the app offers controls for movement and mood behavior, rather than assuming those settings exist or persist after a restart.
Gestures and hand tracking
A hands-on NextPit review reported app adjustment of brightness and color temperature, gesture control for brightness, gestures to switch the light on and off, hand tracking, and up to three automated smart-home tasks. That is useful evidence of the product’s intended operation, but it is not a guarantee that every gesture or app feature is available on every firmware, app version, or regional account. The gesture interface may be less convenient than a physical switch or dimmer: you need the camera to see your hand, and a gesture that works in one position may fail in another. Recognition can plausibly be affected by distance, hand angle, lighting, background clutter, movement speed, an obstructed camera, or multiple people in view. The available material does not provide a verified exhaustive gesture list, recognition range, or latency measurements, so treat any detailed gesture chart from a seller as something to confirm on the actual unit.

To assess tracking before relying on it, try slow horizontal and vertical movement, then move a hand toward and away from the lamp. Check whether the head follows smoothly, overshoots, or stops when the hand leaves view. Repeat with an object partly blocking the hand and with more than one hand in frame. These are practical checks, not published test results; the documentation available here does not quantify operating range, motor noise, recovery behavior, or tracking accuracy.
Is it a good desk lamp?
That is the biggest unanswered practical question. Existing coverage emphasizes the camera, movement, and expressive behavior, not standardized measurements of desk illumination. The available sources do not establish illuminance at a stated distance, color-rendering performance, flicker, glare, coverage, heat, or long-session comfort. Do not infer those specifications from another Xiaomi lamp: measurements and claims for different models do not transfer to the Pipi Lamp.
For work or study, evaluate it as a lamp first: does it light the whole task area evenly, can you position it without glare, does the moving head cast changing shadows, and can you keep it still when you need consistent light? A moving, hand-following light may be fun for drawing or tinkering but could be distracting during reading or screen work. Without measured lighting results, it is not possible to recommend the Pipi as a high-performance task lamp.
Its better-supported appeal is the interactive desk-companion role. If you want an expressive object that responds to your hand and ties into Xiaomi Home, the feature set is unusual. If you mainly need comfortable, predictable light, compare it with conventional desk lamps whose optical performance and regional support are documented.

Xiaomi Home and regional compatibility
The hands-on review reports Xiaomi app control and up to three automated smart-home tasks. It does not establish current support for Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, Matter, or Home Assistant. Compatibility advertised for other Xiaomi bulbs and lamps should not be assumed to apply to this crowdfunding-era product.
Before importing, confirm with the seller which Xiaomi Home app region is required, whether the device appears under that region, which languages are available in its plug-in, whether firmware updates still work, and whether automations require an account or cloud connection. Regional mismatches can leave a device undiscoverable or with an unavailable plug-in; changing the phone’s app region may also affect other Xiaomi devices. The available sources do not establish a universally supported setup path for international owners.
If gesture recognition or tracking fails, first test with one hand against a plain background and make sure the camera is unobstructed. Then check that the phone and lamp are using the required app region and that the lamp is connected to the network. App control or any physical controls may provide a fallback, but the available documentation does not confirm every control or a current reset sequence. Avoid following an unverified reset procedure for a different Xiaomi lamp.

Privacy and household considerations
A camera built into a friendly-looking desk lamp may not be obvious to visitors. Consider that before placing it in a bedroom, child’s room, home office, or shared space. Tell household members what the camera is intended to do, avoid aiming it at private areas, and check the product-specific privacy notice and app permissions before regular use.

The available sources do not confirm whether the Pipi Lamp has a physical shutter, whether tracking can be disabled without turning off other functions, or whether its camera operates when the lamp is idle. If you cannot verify that tracking is off when you want privacy, covering the lens or unplugging the lamp is a more reliable precaution than assuming an app toggle stops all camera activity. Parents should also consider whether children understand that the device contains a camera; the product’s playful reactions are not evidence that it is safe or appropriate for every child’s room.
Availability and import risks in 2026
The Pipi Lamp launched in China through YouPin crowdfunding in April 2023. As of August 18, 2026, the available research did not verify a current Xiaomi global product listing or US retail listing. This is not proof that it cannot be found internationally; it means international retail and support are unverified. An individual marketplace listing may be an import, an old unit, or a seller-held product rather than evidence of an official global launch.
Before buying, ask for the exact model and hardware revision, clear photos of the actual unit, proof the camera and motors work, a return policy, and written warranty terms. Confirm that the power adapter accepts your local voltage and that you can obtain a suitable plug or replacement supply. Check whether the required Xiaomi Home region is usable for you, whether setup instructions are available in a language you understand, and who pays return shipping if pairing or tracking fails. The manual notes that hardware, accessories, and interface illustrations may vary after updates, so verify that the supplied instructions match the unit.
Do not treat 499 yuan as a fair current import price. Shipping, taxes, scarcity, seller markup, condition, and support can change the total substantially. For a camera-and-motor device, after-sales help and a practical return route matter more than a low listing price.
