Xiaomi’s original single-camera Outdoor Camera CW500 was listed for pre-order on Xiaomi Mall in China on February 19, 2024, at 299 yuan, with sales scheduled to begin February 21. The roughly $42 figure was an approximate currency conversion, not a confirmed U.S. price. The announcement is historical: it does not establish the camera’s current price, stock, or availability outside China.
What the 299-yuan pre-order covered
The February 19, 2024 announcement concerned the Xiaomi Outdoor Camera CW500, a single-camera model for Xiaomi’s China market. Xiaomi Mall was reported to be taking reservations at 299 yuan, with sales planned for February 21. On February 28, IT Home subsequently reported the camera on sale through JD.com for the same 299 yuan. IT Home’s launch report and its later sale report document those dates and prices.
Gizmochina rendered 299 yuan as about $42, but that is an approximate conversion in its February 19, 2024 report, not an official U.S. retail price. The reports establish a China-market launch price; they do not establish U.S. distribution, international shipping, import charges, warranty coverage, or a current August 2026 price. Those dates should not be confused with a live pre-order. Xiaomi Mall pages for CW500-branded products are not, by themselves, proof of current stock or international fulfillment: see the CW500 shop page and the separate CW500 Dual shop page.

What the original CW500 offered
The launch coverage described a 5-megapixel sensor producing 3K video, an f/1.6 lens, and HDR intended to retain detail in bright and shadowed parts of a scene. It also listed horizontal and vertical pan-and-tilt control, app-based remote viewing and adjustment, automatic panoramic patrol, and two-way voice with noise reduction. - Night viewing: Xiaomi advertised four-light intelligent full-color night vision and said supplemental lighting could activate when a person was detected at night. Color footage is not guaranteed in every dark scene; it depends on available light and the camera’s supplemental lights.
- Detection and alerts: The camera was described as detecting people and vehicles, sending app alerts, and recording event video. Launch coverage also cited an audible alarm and flashing-light deterrence.
- Network: The listed connections were dual-band 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi 6 and wired networking. A Wi-Fi 6 specification does not guarantee a reliable outdoor connection through walls or over distance. Ethernet can be a more dependable option where a suitable cable run is practical.
- Storage: The launch report listed local, cloud, and NAS storage. Support for cloud storage does not mean it is free, and NAS support does not establish compatibility with every device or surveillance platform.
- Enclosure: The camera was listed as IP66 dust- and water-resistant. IP66 is not a submersion rating and does not make an outlet, cable joint, or power adapter waterproof.
What person and vehicle detection does—and does not—mean
The phrase sometimes translated as “humanoid detection” refers to human- or person-form detection; it does not mean the camera detects humanoid robots. Vehicle detection likewise means identifying a vehicle-like object in the camera view, not reading a license plate or identifying a vehicle’s make, model, driver, or owner. Neither feature establishes facial recognition or professional-grade analytics.

Detection and notification depend on more than the advertised feature. Lighting, rain, foliage, obstructions, camera angle, distance, motion blur, network stability, phone permissions, and app settings can affect results. Xiaomi’s current documentation for the CW500 Dual cautions that AI performance can vary with environmental conditions and that notification behavior can be affected by surveillance alarm intervals. Original CW500 and CW500 Dual are different cameras
The product names are similar, but the CW500 Dual is a separate, later design. Do not apply its camera count, resolution, or installation details to the original model.

The Dual’s fixed-plus-PTZ arrangement can keep one view stationary while the other moves; a single moving camera cannot watch every direction at once. Xiaomi also describes human and vehicle detection for the Dual, but its specifications should be checked separately rather than assumed for another CW500-branded product.

Installation and ownership checks before buying
For an outdoor installation, the camera’s enclosure rating is only one part of the setup. Xiaomi’s CW500 Dual documentation says that model’s power adapter is not waterproof and is intended for indoor use; it does not establish that the original CW500 has the same adapter. Check the exact model’s installation instructions and protect the power supply, outlet, cable entries, and joints appropriately. If mains electrical work or a permanent exterior run is involved, use suitable outdoor-rated components and qualified installation where required.

- Confirm the exact SKU and region. Ask the seller which model and regional version is being supplied. A China-market camera may have app-region, server, language, plug, voltage, or warranty implications; the available launch reporting does not establish compatibility for every country.
- Check the network path. Test Wi-Fi at the mounting point before fixing the camera in place. If signal is weak or variable, consider a supported wired connection and plan a weather-appropriate cable route. Xiaomi’s CW500 Dual documentation says a network cable is not included for that model; confirm package contents for the exact SKU.
- Budget for recording separately. Verify whether a microSD card is included and what capacity and card type the exact camera supports. Xiaomi says the CW500 Dual does not include a microSD card and recommends a certified 16GB–256GB card for that model; do not assume those package details apply to the original CW500. Cloud storage is paid on the Dual according to Xiaomi, and a current plan price was not established. NAS recording may require compatible equipment and setup.
- Price the complete installation. Depending on the model and site, additional costs may include storage, cloud service, Ethernet cable, mounting hardware, protected cable routing, international shipping, taxes, or import fees. Xiaomi says pole clamps may need to be purchased separately for the CW500 Dual; check the listing rather than assuming they come with the original.
- Choose the view deliberately. Pan-and-tilt helps cover a broader area, but a moving lens cannot show two critical directions simultaneously. If continuous views of two zones matter, a fixed-plus-PTZ design may suit that need better.
- Aim with privacy in mind. Frame the camera to monitor your property while limiting unnecessary capture of neighbors, public spaces, workers, or passing vehicles. Check the privacy rules applicable where the camera will be installed.
Who the original CW500 may suit
At its announced China price, the original CW500 combined a 3K pan-and-tilt camera, person and vehicle alerts, two-way audio, and several storage options. It may be a reasonable fit for a Xiaomi/Mijia user monitoring a gate, driveway, garden, exterior corridor, or small shopfront who can confirm the correct regional version and provide stable power and network service.

It is a weaker choice if you require confirmed local warranty and support, guaranteed operation with your country’s Xiaomi Home region, verified NVR/VMS compatibility, uninterrupted monitoring of multiple directions, or dependable plate and face identification. The launch reports do not establish those capabilities. For buyers comparing it with the CW500 Dual, compare the exact model, package, app-region support, and installed cost rather than relying on the shared CW500 name.
