Verdict: The XGIMI HORIZON Ultra is a capable, unusually convenient projector for a big-screen living room: it combines bright 4K XPR imaging, Dolby Vision, automatic setup, and built-in speakers. Its main compromise is picture contrast—dark scenes look gray beside a good dark-room projector—and its 60Hz limit rules out high-refresh gaming. It makes most sense at a substantial discount, not at its original launch price.
On XGIMI’s US site, the new projector was listed at $1,179, down from $1,699.99, and an official refurbished unit at $999 when prices were checked in August 2026. Those are promotional prices, not guarantees of current availability. This review explains what you get, what the 4K and Dolby Vision claims mean in practice, and which rooms and viewers suit it.

The HORIZON Ultra’s strengths are apparent in everyday viewing: it can produce a large, colorful picture with convincing fine detail, and its light output helps when the room is not completely dark. Independent testing by RTINGS likewise describes it as bright and color-accurate, with good brightness uniformity and suitability for a room with some ambient light. That does not make it a television substitute in direct sunlight; a projector’s lumen rating is not directly comparable to the perceived brightness of a TV, and a larger projected image spreads the light across more area.

It is 4K XPR, not native 4K
The projector accepts and displays a 3840 × 2160 image, but its DLP chip is not a native 3840 × 2160 panel. XPR pixel shifting rapidly moves the projected image to create the perception of 4K detail from a lower-resolution DMD. RTINGS identifies it as a 4K XPR DLP projector; TechRadar’s review also explains the pixel-shifting approach and found the resulting detail convincing. For most movie and TV viewing, the practical question is whether the picture looks sharp from your seat—not whether each displayed pixel comes from a separate native 4K mirror.
Dolby Vision helps with format support, not impossible blacks
Dolby Vision support is a useful distinction for a projector in this category. The Ultra also supports HDR10 and HLG, so it can handle common HDR formats. A compatible Dolby Vision source can guide how compatible content is mapped for the display, helping present highlights and tonal detail. But format support cannot overcome the projector’s underlying contrast: bright highlights may look lively while dark parts of the same scene remain visibly gray.
XGIMI says an over-the-air update simplified picture-mode settings and improved Dolby Vision performance; see its firmware update notes. Actual behavior still depends on the source device, app, HDMI path, firmware, and selected picture mode. If Dolby Vision looks unexpectedly dim, flat, or tinted, first try connecting the streaming device directly to the projector, check that the device and app are outputting Dolby Vision, and review the picture mode and firmware.

For movie viewers, contrast is the most important qualification. RTINGS identifies subpar contrast and raised, grayish blacks as the Ultra’s principal image-quality weakness. XGIMI itself cited an average contrast-ratio range of 350:1 to 950:1 in its update clarification; that is the manufacturer’s published range, not an independent measurement. In a dark room, shadowy scenes can therefore look washed out compared with a projector chosen specifically for contrast. HDR can still give bright effects and color more impact, but it does not make the black bars or night scenes OLED-black.
This is a living-room compromise: the Ultra prioritizes brightness, color, and convenience over deep blacks. If you watch mostly with the lights down and care more about dark-scene depth than all-in-one features, compare dark-room-focused models before buying.
Wall or screen?
A flat, neutral-colored wall can be enough to try the projector or for a temporary setup. A dedicated screen generally gives more consistent color, surface texture, geometry, and repeatable results. A gray or ambient-light-rejecting screen may improve perceived contrast in some rooms, but it is not a cure for the projector’s native black-level limitation and can bring viewing-angle or hotspotting trade-offs. For a permanent installation, include a suitable screen in the budget rather than assuming a wall is equivalent.
Setup and placement: unusually forgiving, with a sharpness trade-off
The compact 5.2kg chassis is portable enough to move between a shelf, stand, or coffee table, though it is not a pocket-sized device. XGIMI’s ISA 3.0 features include autofocus, auto-keystone correction, screen alignment, obstacle avoidance, eye protection, wall-color adaptation, and optical zoom. Together they make initial setup less fussy, particularly in a multipurpose room where the projector may be repositioned.

Automation is not the same as ideal placement. Keystone correction digitally reshapes the image; an image can look square while losing some effective detail or edge sharpness. For best results, physically center the projector toward the screen, keep it level, use optical zoom for framing, and minimize or disable digital correction once it is installed. Then run autofocus and check that automatic screen alignment has not cropped the picture. If the image seems softer than expected, these corrections are among the first settings to inspect.
Wall-color adaptation can help compensate for a non-white surface, but it is not a substitute for a neutral screen. XGIMI says the feature must be enabled in system settings, covers a stated wall color-temperature range of 3000K–15000K, and is best used in dim lighting.
The 1.2–1.5:1 throw ratio means placement distance changes with image width and zoom. XGIMI lists a supported 40–200-inch image and recommends approximately 60–120 inches for best use. Before buying a mount or planning a permanent installation, check the manufacturer’s placement information for your target screen size; ceiling height, screen position, zoom, and furniture all matter. The projector supports front, rear, front-ceiling, and rear-ceiling projection modes.
Smart TV, ports, and everyday use
The built-in platform is Android TV 11 with Chromecast built in; the projector also supports AirScreen, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.2. XGIMI lists 2GB RAM and 32GB storage, although not all storage is available for user files. App availability and behavior can vary with region, certification, and software version, so do not assume every streaming service will work identically on every unit. Check the current app situation for the specific market and model you plan to buy. If you prefer a familiar interface or need an app that is unavailable or unreliable, connect a separate streaming device.
There are two HDMI inputs, with eARC on one of them, plus two USB ports, Ethernet/LAN, optical audio output, and a 3.5mm headphone output. That covers a sensible living-room setup: a streamer and console can each connect directly, while Ethernet is an option where wired networking is more reliable. With more HDMI sources, use a compatible receiver or switch; USB playback depends on file and codec compatibility.
A straightforward soundbar connection is:

If Dolby Vision, audio passthrough, or device handshaking is unreliable, test a source connected directly to the projector as well as the receiver-centered arrangement. eARC is useful, but the result depends on the source, projector settings, receiver or soundbar, and supported audio formats.
Gaming: fine for casual play, not high-refresh competition
XGIMI advertises latency of 18ms or lower in game mode with auto-keystone turned off. That can be suitable for casual console gaming, party games, racing, and many single-player titles. Treat it as a manufacturer’s game-mode claim, not proof that the projector is a competitive gaming display. Independent coverage reports a 60Hz ceiling; it does not offer the 4K/120Hz or 1080p/240Hz modes sought by serious competitive players. RTINGS lists the two HDMI inputs as supporting 4K at 60Hz.

For the lowest-latency setup, select game mode and disable auto-keystone, then physically align the projector as well as you can. The image may look different from the projector’s most accurate movie modes. If high refresh rates, VRR, or competitive response are priorities, choose another display.

Two 12W Harman/Kardon speakers provide 24W total and support formats including Dolby Audio, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD, and DTS Virtual:X. They are useful for temporary viewing and ordinary TV or movie watching without extra equipment. A soundbar or AV receiver is a worthwhile addition for a permanent movie room, especially if you want more bass, wider sound, or a more immersive setup. The projector’s eARC and optical outputs provide connection options, subject to the format support of the full audio chain.
How it compares with other projector choices
The right alternative depends on which trade-off you want to fix, not on a universal “best” ranking. RTINGS’ comparison testing provides context for the following options:
- For more contrast: RTINGS reports better contrast and wider color gamut from the Hisense C2 Ultra and Valerion VisionMaster Pro 2. The XGIMI remains smaller and lighter than the Valerion and is more accurate out of the box, according to RTINGS. Check prices and feature sets in your market before treating either as a direct-value replacement.
- For dark-room image quality: RTINGS identifies the Epson Home Cinema 3800 as a stronger choice for pure image quality and dark-room viewing at a similar price. The XGIMI counters with a more integrated package, including smart features, Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Vision, and automatic adaptation.
- For a newer XGIMI platform: Compare the HORIZON 20 Pro and HORIZON 20 Max in XGIMI’s current lineup. Newer models may bring updated processing and features and, under the US warranty policy, two years of coverage versus one year for the HORIZON Ultra. The Ultra may still be the better deal when heavily discounted.
The HORIZON Ultra launched in August 2023, so age matters when its price approaches the original $1,699.99. Compare the total package—contrast, refresh rate, software, warranty, and price—not just resolution or Dolby Vision badges.
Price, warranty, and value in 2026
When checked in August 2026, XGIMI’s US product page listed the Ultra for $1,179, reduced from $1,699.99; its official refurbished page listed units at $999. Prices, stock, return terms, and refurbished condition can change. Confirm the offer and warranty language before checkout. XGIMI’s US warranty page lists one year for the HORIZON Ultra for eligible purchases through its official site or official Amazon Store. The light source has a manufacturer-rated life of 25,000 hours; that is an expected rating, not a guarantee of unchanged brightness throughout that period.
At around $1,000–$1,200, it is compelling for someone who values easy setup, a large bright image, Dolby Vision, and integrated sound more than deep blacks or high-refresh gaming. Near $1,700, newer alternatives deserve much closer comparison. Also account for the screen, stand or mount, HDMI accessories, possible streaming device, and any audio upgrade; those can change the real cost of a permanent setup.
Who should buy the HORIZON Ultra?
- You want a large, bright picture for movies and TV in a living room with some ambient light.
- You value Dolby Vision, automatic setup, and integrated audio more than reference-level contrast.
- You need flexible placement or expect to move the projector between locations.
- Your gaming is casual and 60Hz is enough.
- You can buy it at a meaningful discount and have checked newer competitors.
Who should skip it?
- You mostly watch in a fully dark room and prioritize deep blacks and shadow detail.
- You want 4K/120Hz, 1080p/240Hz, VRR, or a projector for competitive gaming.
- You need short-throw placement for a small room.
- You expect projector HDR to match an OLED television’s contrast.
- You are paying close to the original price without comparing newer models, warranties, and features.
Final verdict
The XGIMI HORIZON Ultra earns its appeal through the whole living-room experience rather than any single specification: convincing pixel-shifted 4K detail, useful brightness, Dolby Vision, flexible setup, smart features, and speakers in one compact unit. Its raised blacks are a real limitation, not a settings problem that Dolby Vision or a screen will erase, and 60Hz defines its gaming ceiling. Buy it on a strong discount if convenience and a big, bright shared-room picture are your priorities. For dark-room cinema or high-refresh play, choose a projector built around those needs instead.
