A Wi-Fi-enabled soil moisture sensor can help you see when soil is drying out, send an alert, or trigger irrigation—but the label does not tell you whether the probe itself connects to Wi-Fi, whether its percentage is scientifically calibrated, or whether it will work where you plan to install it. Choose by the complete system: probe, radio or gateway, power, app or automation, and calibration.

What a Wi-Fi soil moisture sensor measures

A sensor measures an electrical property that changes with water in the surrounding medium, then reports it as a number. That number may be a raw voltage or ADC count, dielectric permittivity, volumetric water content (VWC), or a normalized moisture index. These are not interchangeable.

A display reading of “62%” does not necessarily mean water occupies 62% of the soil volume. For example, the Ecowitt WH51 reports a 0–100% range with 1% resolution and allows adjustment of its 0% and 100% calibration points. Treat that as a calibrated range for the sensor and medium, not automatically as VWC. For a more quantitative measurement, choose hardware and firmware that explicitly provide VWC and calibrate it for the soil. ESPHome’s SMT100 component, for example, supports moisture as VWC as well as permittivity, raw counts, temperature, and voltage.

Moisture is also different from electrical conductivity (EC), which can indicate dissolved salts or nutrients. A sensor reporting moisture, temperature, and EC is providing separate measurements; one should not be mistaken for another.

How the reading reaches your phone

“Wi-Fi-enabled” can describe a whole system, not the buried probe. Check the signal path:

  • Direct Wi-Fi: Probe electronics or a controller join the home Wi-Fi network and send readings to an app, local API, or cloud service.
  • Gateway-based: The probe uses a lower-power link such as sub-GHz radio or Bluetooth; a separate gateway connects to Wi-Fi and forwards data.
  • Local smart-home: A controller such as an ESP32 publishes data through ESPHome or MQTT, potentially without a vendor cloud account.
  • Cloud-connected: The device or gateway sends data through a vendor service. This can provide convenient history and alerts but depends on an account, internet access, and the service remaining available.

For example, the Ecowitt WH51 is not a standalone Wi-Fi probe: it communicates over regional sub-GHz radio and needs a compatible GW1100 or GW2000 gateway for Wi-Fi and app access. A gateway-based sensor may still suit a garden better than direct Wi-Fi, especially when battery life or coverage matters. Describe it as part of a Wi-Fi-enabled system, not as a probe that joins Wi-Fi by itself.

Direct Wi-Fi is most convenient where coverage is reliable and USB or mains power is practical. Wi-Fi draws more energy than many low-power sensor radios, and an outdoor sensor may struggle behind masonry, in a detached greenhouse, or inside a metal grow tent. Test signal strength at the final location, not beside the router. Gateway systems add hardware and ecosystem dependence, but may let several battery-powered sensors report over a longer range.

Capacitive or resistive probe?

Capacitive probes are generally the safer choice for a sensor intended to stay in soil. Their sensing electrodes need not be directly exposed to current-carrying soil, so they are less prone to electrode corrosion than simple resistive probes. Sealing and construction still matter: “capacitive” does not guarantee accuracy, long life, or outdoor suitability. The Apollo PLT-1, for instance, uses a capacitive probe and is positioned as an indoor plant sensor.

Resistive probes are inexpensive and straightforward for a short experiment or a basic dry-versus-wet signal. But current through exposed electrodes can contribute to corrosion, and dissolved salts or fertilizer can affect readings. Continuous excitation may accelerate deterioration. For a permanent installation, prefer a sealed capacitive design; for a temporary low-cost test, a resistive sensor can be adequate if its limitations are acceptable.

Choosing a system

Need Suitable approach Check before buying
One or a few indoor plants, with Home Assistant A Home Assistant-oriented sensor such as Apollo PLT-1, or a DIY ESPHome node Whether it is indoor-only, what accessories or battery are extra, and whether data is local
Several garden or greenhouse locations A gateway-based radio system such as Ecowitt WH51 Gateway compatibility, regional radio frequency, gateway cost, and coverage at each probe
Local control and customization ESP32 with ESPHome or MQTT Board ADC behavior, probe calibration, enclosure, power strategy, and time for setup
Long range or a large property LoRaWAN or another dedicated long-range system Gateway and network setup; it is not a direct Wi-Fi solution
Research or irrigation decisions needing quantitative values A dedicated VWC-capable instrument, such as an SMT100- or PMWCS3-class sensor Calibration, controller/interface requirements, and the sensor’s stated measurement basis

Current examples illustrate the trade-offs, not a universal ranking. The WH51 listing showed a $17.99 sensor price on August 16, 2026, but the compatible gateway is additional. The Apollo PLT-1 listing showed a $27.99 base price; its battery version requires a separately sourced flat-top 18650, and the product is primarily aimed at indoor plants rather than outdoor garden deployment. Prices and configurations can change, so check the product pages before purchase. Apollo PLT-1 details.

For more measurement outputs, ESPHome supports the UART-based SMT100 at 9600 baud with a default 60-second polling interval. Its I²C PMWCS3 component supports VWC, EC, temperature, and permittivity; its documented default address is 0x63 and default update interval is 60 seconds. These are integration options for compatible hardware, not ready-to-use consumer products.

Home Assistant compatibility can mean very different things: native integration, ESPHome discovery, MQTT, local API, a community integration, or cloud polling. The Sensoterra integration is cloud-polling and requires vendor account credentials; its probes typically measure hourly while Home Assistant polls the service every 15 minutes. Those are different intervals, and neither means a direct Wi-Fi probe.

Install it where the watering decision matters

  • Place the probe at the depth of the plant’s active root zone, not just at the soil surface.
  • Keep it surrounded by soil. An air gap can produce a falsely dry or unstable reading; avoid pressing it against a pot wall.
  • Do not put it immediately beside a drip emitter, where a local wet spot may not represent the rest of the roots.
  • Use the same depth and orientation when comparing readings over time.
  • Do not force a rigid probe through stones or hard, compacted soil. Loosen the soil or make a pilot hole first.
  • For outdoor use, check which parts are protected: probe, cable, connector, battery compartment, and controller enclosure may have different water protection.

Ecowitt’s WH51 instructions specifically warn against forcing the probe into hard or rocky soil and recommend a pilot hole where needed; they also recommend allowing two to three minutes in soil for a reading. Follow the instructions for the specific sensor you install. An IP66 listing for a probe does not establish that every connected enclosure, battery compartment, or cable entry can be submerged.

Calibrate for your soil

A factory scale or adjustable endpoints do not remove the need to check the sensor in the medium where it will be used. A practical two-point calibration creates a useful local watering index:

  1. Insert the probe in the actual soil or growing mix at the planned depth and record the raw value or reading when it is dry enough to represent your intended low-water condition.
  2. Thoroughly wet the medium, let excess water drain, allow it to equilibrate, and record the wet reading.
  3. Map those points to a local scale such as “dry” and “wet,” or use them as endpoints for a normalized percentage.
  4. Repeat if necessary and verify that the reading changes consistently during drying.

This produces a practical index, not necessarily absolute VWC. For quantitative calibration, use a known soil and consistent bulk density, compare readings with gravimetric measurements (weighing a sample before and after drying), and calibrate across the expected moisture range. Do not assume a calibration transfers between potting mix, sandy soil, clay, coco coir, or a fertilized bed. Soil composition, density, salinity, temperature, and probe contact can all alter the response.

Building a direct Wi-Fi sensor with ESPHome

A common DIY system uses an ESP8266 or ESP32-family board, a capacitive analog probe, power, firmware, and a Home Assistant API or MQTT connection. The work is not just reading a voltage: ADC behavior varies by board, the sensor may need switched power, and an outdoor installation needs sound enclosure and cable sealing. Get stable readings while continuously powered before adding deep sleep.

In the example, lower voltage maps to a higher displayed index; the direction depends on the specific probe. Keep raw voltage or counts visible while commissioning so a bad percentage does not hide a wiring or ADC problem. A locally calibrated percentage remains a local index unless the sensor is specifically calibrated to report VWC.

Only after readings are reliable should you test a sleep cycle such as:

deep_sleep:
  run_duration: 10s
  sleep_duration: 15min

Ten seconds may not be enough for a particular board to wake, stabilize the reading, associate with Wi-Fi, connect, and transmit. Test actual wake cycles and verify that sleep really occurs. Battery life depends on reporting interval, radio retries, signal strength, battery chemistry and temperature, probe power, and firmware—not just on the battery’s nominal capacity. Apollo’s stated six-month estimate applies to the PLT-1 under its stated default settings and a quality rechargeable 18650; it is not a general estimate for Wi-Fi sensors.

Automate irrigation with safeguards

Use a sensor as one input to a watering decision, not as an infallible command. Soil readings can lag watering and vary by position. Add hysteresis so the system does not switch repeatedly near one threshold, a minimum interval between watering events, a delay after watering, a manual override, and a safe response if the sensor goes offline.

Start watering when moisture < 28%
Stop watering when moisture > 42%
Do not start again for 6 hours
After watering, wait 20 minutes before evaluating moisture

These are example values only; they are not horticultural thresholds for every plant or soil. A practical control can also check rain, tank level, valve state, or a maximum daily watering limit. If the sensor stops reporting, avoid treating a stale value as current moisture.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely causes and checks
Reading never changes Check soil contact and air gaps, probe power, wiring, ADC pin, entity selection, and calibration direction. Compare raw output in air, dry medium, and wet medium; temporarily remove filters.
Voltage is stuck Check the selected pin, probe damage, ADC attenuation/reference behavior, supply stability, ground, and the board’s ADC restrictions. Diagnose raw voltage or counts before the percentage.
Reading shifts when Wi-Fi starts Suspect board-specific ADC limitations, supply sag, radio noise, or poor grounding. Verify the exact controller documentation and test raw readings with Wi-Fi both off and on.
Battery drains quickly Check weak signal and repeated connection attempts, excessive logging, probe power left on, reporting frequency, battery type and temperature, and whether deep sleep is actually entered.
Reading looks wet after rain, but roots seem dry Probe may be too shallow, in a rainwater pocket, or in a different soil layer from the roots. Reposition it and recalibrate for the installed soil.
Readings change after fertilizing Dissolved salts can affect readings, especially with resistive probes and some inexpensive circuits. Verify soil condition manually before acting on an abrupt sensor change.
Wi-Fi sensor drops offline outdoors Test signal at the installed location, then consider a better access point or a gateway-based, long-range, or low-power radio architecture.

Alternatives to direct Wi-Fi

  • Bluetooth Low Energy: Often suitable for indoor plants where a phone or Bluetooth proxy is nearby; range and smart-home integration depend on the receiver.
  • Proprietary sub-GHz radio: Can suit multiple battery-powered garden sensors, but requires a compatible gateway. The WH51 is one example.
  • LoRaWAN: Consider for long distances or larger agricultural sites; it requires gateway and network/application configuration.
  • Thread or Matter: Check support for the exact device, ecosystem, and software. An 802.15.4 radio alone does not mean a product supports Thread or Matter.
  • Manual meter: Useful as a reference check against the actual soil condition, even when an automated sensor is installed.

For one houseplant, a compact indoor sensor may be simpler than a gateway system. For multiple outdoor points, a gateway-based radio often makes more sense than putting every probe on Wi-Fi. If you want local Home Assistant control and are comfortable maintaining hardware, ESPHome is flexible. For high-value crops or decisions requiring absolute water content, choose a measurement-grade probe and budget for calibration and integration.
