A Swann camera that appears not to record may actually be saving clips somewhere other than the Playback screen. The fault could also be motion settings, undetected storage, cloud access, a recorder schedule, or power and network trouble. Start by identifying what you can see: live video, motion alerts, local clips, and recorder footage point to different fixes.
Start with the symptom
| What you see | Check first |
|---|---|
| No live view | Power, Wi-Fi or network connection, pairing, and hardware. |
| Live view works, but no motion alerts | Motion mode, sensitivity, detection zone, camera placement, and power. |
| Alerts arrive, but no clips appear | Where the model saves footage, storage detection, cloud eligibility, and app filters. |
| Clips appear in Local Clips but not Playback | The camera may be recording locally but not uploading to cloud storage. |
| A DVR/NVR shows a camera image but no footage | Channel recording settings, schedule, and recorder storage. |
| Clips appear and then seem to disappear | Date or event filters and rolling retention limits. |
A motion alert means the camera detected an event; it does not by itself prove that a clip was saved or uploaded. A blank Playback tab likewise does not prove that recording failed.
1. Identify your camera and where it records
Find the model number on the device, packaging, or app before following model-specific steps. Swann products include standalone Wi-Fi cameras, battery-powered cameras, and cameras connected to DVRs or NVRs. They do not all use the same storage or menus.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Standalone camera: Depending on the model, footage may be stored in the cloud, on a microSD card, or in internal storage. Some models support more than one option.
- DVR/NVR system: Footage is generally saved by the recorder, subject to its channel settings, schedule, and available storage.
- Battery-powered camera: Many standalone and battery models are designed for event-triggered recording, not guaranteed continuous recording. Do not assume 24/7 recording is available; check the model’s manual and settings. Swann explains why some cameras do not offer continuous recording.
For model-specific storage details, consult Swann’s standalone-camera storage guidance and, for recorder systems, its camera and recorder compatibility reference.

2. Check Local Clips before assuming the camera failed
On some standalone models, the app’s Playback area is for cloud recordings while local footage is listed separately. In the Swann Security app, tap More → camera → Local Clips if that option is available. Check Playback separately for cloud clips. The exact options depend on the model, storage setup, account, and plan.
If Playback looks empty, clear date, camera, and event-type filters and confirm you are signed into the intended account. Swann’s guides cover Playback filters and missing cloud recordings. A local clip with no corresponding cloud clip points toward upload, plan, or app-sync issues—not necessarily failed recording.
3. Check motion detection and the camera’s view
If live view works but events are not triggering, confirm that the correct motion mode is active and sensitivity is not set to 0 or Off. Review the detection zone and ensure the area where movement occurs is included. In the app, Swann’s documented paths include Modes → edit mode → choose camera → Motion Detection and More → camera → Detection Zone; labels can vary by model and software version. See Swann’s motion and detection-zone instructions.
- Check that the lens and any PIR sensor are not blocked.
- Make sure the subject is within the camera’s effective detection range.
- Consider whether the camera is aimed at a busy street, moving branches, reflections, or shadows that produce repeated triggers.
- If clips are unusually short, review sensitivity, range, and how the model handles the start and end of an event. Swann discusses motion clips that end prematurely.
Motion-triggered cameras record in response to detected events; they may not capture every movement continuously. Movement outside a configured zone or effective range can produce a short clip or no clip.
4. Check microSD or internal storage
If your model uses microSD
Open Swann Security app → More → camera → Advanced Settings → Storage Management and check whether the card is detected. If the app reports No Storage Detected:

- Power down as directed for your model, then remove and reinsert the card. Check for poor seating or visibly dirty or damaged contacts.
- Reboot the camera. Swann’s documented app path is More → camera → Advanced Settings → Reboot → Confirm.
- Try another card confirmed as compatible with your exact model.
- If a card is detected but recordings still fail, consider formatting it in the app, then rebooting and testing again.
Important: Formatting may erase footage on the card. Export anything you need before formatting. Do not assume a universal supported capacity or card specification; check the camera’s model-specific documentation. Swann’s guides explain what to try when storage is not detected and storage management on supported standalone cameras.
If your model uses internal storage
Some Swann cameras have no microSD slot and use internal memory instead. Do not buy a card unless the model supports one. Try rebooting the camera and router or modem, then check again. If the problem continues, a reset and fresh setup may be appropriate after you have saved any accessible footage and recorded your settings.
5. Separate cloud problems from recording problems
A camera may save footage locally but fail to upload it, or its model may not provide the cloud feature you expect. Check that the model supports cloud recording, that you are using the right account and region, and that your plan includes the desired feature and retention. Older clips may also have expired under rolling retention.
Swann’s U.S. Secure+ page lists plan and retention information that varies by camera category. When reviewed in August 2026, its U.S. page showed free service with no cloud retention for EVO models and one day for other listed cameras; paid plans listed 60 days. Those details, prices, eligibility, and promotions can change and may not apply outside the United States. Check the current Swann Secure+ plans page for your product and region.
A subscription cannot fix a camera that is offline, fails to detect motion, or cannot save to its required local storage. First establish whether a test event is being recorded locally; then troubleshoot cloud upload or plan access if needed.

- Warm tips: This is a 4K AHD camera. If you plan to use it with your existing DVR setup, please ensure that your DVR is preferably a Swann brand one and that its resolution is 4K or even higher. Otherwise, it won't be compatible, and you won't get any video output.
- Ultra-Impressive 4K: Video in pro-quality Ultra HD to see everything that’s happening live or in playback mode, plus you can zoom in close to see car license plates, faces & so much more.
- Reliable Wired Connection&DIY Installation: Everything that you need is in the pack, including a 60ft (18m) cables, screws & wall plugs, power adapter & splitter and security stickers. Mount the cameras outdoors as their weatherproof design is IP66 rated, meaning they are built to withstand rain, snow & heat, all year round.
- See Colour at Night: Get colour video at night up to 32ft (10m) with the lights on & even longer, up to 130ft (40m), in black & white during total darkness.
- More Reliable Security: With Swann's True Detect, warm objects like people & cars can trigger the lights, siren, push notifications & recording with fewer false alarms to worry about.
6. Check the network and app
Remote Playback depends on both the phone’s internet connection and a stable connection from the camera or recorder. A phone that can browse the internet does not prove the camera has reliable upstream connectivity.

- Confirm the camera or recorder is online and test live view.
- Reboot the camera, then restart the router or modem.
- Force-close and reopen the Swann Security app.
- Try Playback while the phone is on a different internet connection.
- Check for app updates and, where the model offers it, firmware updates.
- Create a new test event and check the correct storage location.
These steps follow Swann’s guidance for missing recordings and network and Playback issues. If local clips work but cloud Playback does not, focus on connectivity, account, plan, filters, and synchronization.
7. For DVR/NVR systems, check channel settings, schedule, and storage
A visible camera image only confirms that video reaches the recorder; it does not confirm that the recorder is saving footage. On supported Swann recorders:
- Open the recorder’s Menu → Record → Record.
- Confirm Record Enable is checked for the affected channel, then select Apply.
- Open Record Schedule and select the channel.
- Choose Normal for continuous recording or Detection for motion recording, if those options are available on your model.
- Set the days and times. Use Copy if appropriate, then select Apply. Check each channel rather than assuming one setting applies to all.
Menu names and schedule labels vary by recorder. A schedule cannot save footage if the recorder cannot detect usable storage. Treat a hard-drive or storage error as a storage fault, not a motion-sensor problem. Follow Swann’s recorder recording and schedule guide for your model.
8. Run a controlled recording test
A short, repeatable test can show where the failure occurs:

- Confirm the camera is online and identify whether it should save to microSD, internal storage, cloud, or a recorder.
- Confirm storage is detected and motion recording is enabled, if applicable.
- Stand inside the configured detection zone, then walk across the scene rather than directly toward the lens.
- Wait for the event to finish.
- Check whether an alert arrived, then check Local Clips, cloud Playback, or recorder Playback as appropriate.
If there is no alert, revisit motion settings, range, power, and placement. If there is an alert but no local clip, investigate storage or the model’s recording behavior. If a local clip exists but cloud Playback is empty, investigate upload, account, filters, and plan. If a recorder image is visible but footage is absent, check the channel, schedule, and storage.

For a camera that goes offline or misses events intermittently, inspect its power source, charging status, adapter, cable, and connection. For a solar-powered camera, check that the panel receives suitable light and that its connection is secure. Also consider Wi-Fi obstruction, a blocked sensor, or a camera position that puts people outside the detection range. Battery behavior and indicator lights vary by model, so use its manual for exact meanings rather than relying on a generic LED interpretation.
10. Reset only after simpler checks
A factory reset can remove settings and require the camera to be added again. Before resetting, export any footage you can access, note your account and Wi-Fi details, and use the reset procedure for the exact model. Afterward, set up the camera again, restore its motion mode, zone, schedule, and storage settings, then run a test before relying on it. Swann recommends reset and setup again in some persistent storage-detection cases, after card and reboot checks.
When to contact Swann Support
Escalate if multiple known-compatible cards remain undetected, storage stays unavailable after troubleshooting and reset, a recorder repeatedly reports no hard drive, or the camera will not stay powered or online. Contact support if the problem persists after a clean setup and the controlled test, or if one camera or channel fails while the others work normally.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I get Swann motion alerts but no recordings?
An alert shows that motion was detected, but not necessarily that a clip was saved or uploaded. Check Local Clips and confirm storage is detected; if a local clip exists, investigate cloud access, account, filters, or plan.
Does every Swann camera need a microSD card?
No. Storage varies by model: some cameras use microSD, some internal storage, some cloud recording, and recorder systems use the DVR/NVR. Check the exact model before buying a card.
Can a battery-powered Swann camera record continuously?
Not necessarily. Many battery-powered and standalone models are designed for event-triggered recording. Confirm continuous-recording support in the documentation for your model.
Will formatting the microSD card delete footage?
It may erase locally stored footage. Export anything important before formatting.
Will a Secure+ subscription fix recording problems?
Not if the camera is offline, motion is not triggering, or required local storage is unavailable. A plan concerns cloud features and retention, which vary by model and region.
