An LG soundbar that is not working may have no power, no sound, a failed TV connection, a Bluetooth pairing problem, or a silent subwoofer—each calls for a different check. Start by confirming power, mute and volume, the selected input, and the TV’s audio output. Then test the connection you use. If the soundbar works over Bluetooth or optical but not HDMI ARC, focus on the HDMI connection and TV settings rather than assuming the soundbar is broken.
Do these checks first
- Turn on the TV and soundbar. Check that the soundbar’s display or indicator responds.
- Unmute both devices and raise the volume using the soundbar’s own buttons as well as the TV remote.
- On the soundbar, select the input that matches the connection: HDMI ARC/eARC, OPTICAL, or Bluetooth. Depending on the model, the control may be labeled Function, F, or an external-input button.
- Confirm the TV is set to send audio to that soundbar connection, not its internal speakers.
- Reseat both ends of the cable. If practical, unplug the TV and soundbar from power for about one minute, reconnect them, and test again.
- Play a different source. If you normally use a set-top box or console, try a built-in TV app to see whether the problem follows one device or affects everything.
These checks address the usual practical suspects—input selection, mute or volume, cabling, and TV output settings. LG’s no-sound troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the source, connection, and settings. Button names and indicator meanings differ between soundbar models.
Identify the symptom

If the soundbar has no power
- Plug the soundbar directly into a known-working wall outlet, bypassing a power strip or switched outlet temporarily.
- Check that the power cable is firmly connected at both ends and is not visibly damaged.
- Try the physical power button on the soundbar, not just the remote. Replace or check the remote batteries if the physical button works.
If there is still no response from a known-good outlet, the issue may be internal and require service. Stop using the unit if you notice a burning smell, abnormal heat, liquid exposure, or visible damage; do not open the enclosure.

Check mute and volume on both the TV and soundbar, then verify the soundbar is listening to the connected source. A bar set to Bluetooth will not play TV audio coming through HDMI, for example. Also confirm the program or device is actually playing. Test the TV’s built-in speakers: if those are silent too, investigate the TV, app, broadcast, or source before concluding the soundbar has failed.

When using a TV, find its audio output setting—often called Sound Out on LG TVs—and choose the connected soundbar path. Menu labels vary by model, region, language, and software version. If the TV speakers work but the soundbar does not, output selection and the physical connection are good places to focus.
Fix HDMI ARC or eARC
ARC/eARC uses a specific TV port and soundbar port. Connect the TV’s port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC to the soundbar’s port labeled HDMI OUT (TV ARC/eARC) or similar. Do not confuse that soundbar output with an ordinary HDMI input. Reseat both ends and, if possible, test with another known-good HDMI cable. Temporarily remove unusual intermediate devices from the connection path.
Choose HDMI ARC as the TV’s sound output
For the LG TV generations covered by LG’s published instructions, the menu paths are:

These paths are not guaranteed to match every TV. Check your television’s manual if the names or options differ. LG’s soundbar troubleshooting guide lists these generation-specific options.
Check Simplink (HDMI-CEC) and restart the connection
On compatible LG TVs, enable Simplink (HDMI-CEC) for configurations that rely on HDMI-CEC for ARC operation or device control. Also make sure the soundbar itself is set to HDMI ARC/eARC—not OPTICAL or another input. CEC is relevant to many ARC setups, but it cannot fix a faulty port, cable, incompatible device, or every handshake problem.
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Unplug both from power for about one minute.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable at the ARC/eARC ports and restore power.
- Turn on the TV first, then the soundbar. Recheck the TV’s Sound Out setting and the bar’s input.
Test a basic audio format
If the connection is detected but audio is absent, intermittent, or limited to particular content, temporarily set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM if that option is available. If PCM works but Auto, Pass Through, or a surround format does not, the issue may be an audio-format compatibility or negotiation problem rather than failed speakers. Support for eARC and Dolby or DTS formats depends on the exact TV, soundbar, source, and model year. Optical can be a useful test, but it does not necessarily carry every format or feature available through eARC.

Fix optical audio
- Connect the TV’s optical audio output to the soundbar’s optical input.
- Remove protective caps from the cable ends if present, and insert each plug fully in the correct orientation.
- Select OPTICAL on the soundbar and set the TV’s audio output to Optical, Optical Out, or the equivalent option.
- Test a built-in TV app or a simple stereo source. If there is still no sound, try another optical cable.
Optical is a useful fallback or diagnostic test, particularly if ARC is unreliable. It generally offers fewer control and audio-format capabilities than HDMI ARC/eARC, so check what your particular devices support before treating it as a full replacement.
Fix Bluetooth pairing or dropouts
- Select the soundbar’s Bluetooth input and enter pairing mode using the procedure in the manual for your exact model.
- On the TV, phone, or other source, forget or remove the old soundbar pairing, then search and pair again.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on at the source. Disconnect other nearby devices that may be reconnecting to the soundbar automatically.
- Bring the source close to the bar for initial pairing and test with a second phone or TV if possible.
If one source pairs and another does not, investigate the source device’s Bluetooth settings or compatibility. Supported features and Bluetooth behavior vary by model and device type; LG notes that surroundings can also affect wireless connections. If the subwoofer or rear speakers are silent
A silent wireless subwoofer does not necessarily mean the main soundbar is broken; the bar may still play through its own speakers. Check that the subwoofer is powered and consult the manual for what its status light means on that model. Move it away from major obstructions and, as a test, from nearby wireless equipment such as a router. Power-cycle both units, then use the exact model’s pairing or wireless-reset instructions. Test with content that has clear bass.
Do not rely on a button combination from another LG model: pairing steps and indicator meanings are not universal. LG treats a subwoofer that is disconnected while the soundbar speakers work as a separate troubleshooting issue in its external sound system guide.

- Check whether the problem affects every source or only one app, channel, console, or streaming device. If only one source is affected, check its output settings and connection first.
- Test the TV’s internal speakers and, if available, test the soundbar over optical or Bluetooth. This helps separate a source or HDMI-path problem from a broader soundbar fault.
- Reseat or replace the HDMI or optical cable. For ARC/eARC, repeat the power-cycle and port checks above.
- Temporarily select PCM on the TV to test for a format mismatch. If speech is out of sync, check the TV or soundbar’s lip-sync setting; menu labels vary.
- For wireless dropouts, reduce distance and obstructions as a test. Interference is one possibility, not a diagnosis by itself.
- If the trouble began after a software update, record the device, software version, and approximate date. Check the exact model’s support page for relevant updates or instructions.
Do not assume distorted or broken-up sound proves that the speaker itself has failed. A source, cable, format, or connection handshake can produce similar symptoms. Conversely, permanent distortion across several sources and connections deserves service attention.

Reset carefully; procedures differ by model
LG’s troubleshooting flow includes an A/V Reset step, but that does not establish one reset sequence for every LG soundbar. A TV A/V reset is also not necessarily the same as a soundbar factory reset. A factory reset may erase Bluetooth pairings, custom sound settings, network settings, or other preferences. Before using any button combination, identify the soundbar’s model number and follow its exact manual. Do not apply a reset instruction found for a different model.
Check firmware and software safely
- Use the official support page for the exact soundbar model and region; check the TV’s support page separately if the TV may be involved.
- Confirm which product an update applies to—the soundbar, TV, wireless receiver, or an accessory such as WOWCAST. Do not install firmware intended for another model or region.
- Do not interrupt power during an update.
- If the problem started after an update, note the version and date before contacting support. Testing optical or Bluetooth can help determine whether the issue is limited to the HDMI path.
When to contact service
Seek LG support or an authorized service provider if the soundbar will not power on from a known-good outlet, its physical controls do not respond, it has visible damage or abnormal heat, no input works after connection and setting checks, or distortion persists across multiple sources. A subwoofer that repeatedly fails to pair after the exact model procedure may also need service. If the soundbar still works by Bluetooth or optical but not HDMI, describe it as an HDMI/ARC problem rather than a total soundbar failure.
Before contacting support, gather the soundbar model and serial number, TV model, connection type, sources affected, whether the issue is constant or intermittent, software versions if known, and the steps already tried. Start with LG’s official support resources and the support page for your exact model. Repair versus replacement depends on warranty, age, repair quote, and the cost and features of a suitable replacement; do not replace the unit before isolating the TV, source, cable, and connection path.
