Haier’s IFA 2025 showcase offered a more convincing vision of the smart home than the usual promise of controlling appliances from a phone. Its most interesting ideas were quieter: washing machines that interpret a load, refrigerators designed to help preserve and track food, ovens that respond to humidity, and appliances that share information through the hOn platform.
That does not mean Haier has proved that its AI appliances perform better, save significant money, or will remain useful for years without cloud services. The IFA presentation demonstrated a promising direction—not a finished verdict on the best connected-appliance ecosystem.
The real product was the ecosystem, not one smart appliance
Haier Europe’s “Naturally Connected” presentation centred on a more than 3,000-square-metre exhibition at IFA in Berlin. The public event ran from September 5 to 9, 2025, following Haier’s press conference on September 4. The showcase brought together products from Haier, Candy, Hoover and Care+Protect, with the hOn platform acting as the software layer.
That matters because “Haier home tech” at IFA did not mean only appliances carrying the Haier badge. Candy contributed laundry, cooking and small appliances; Hoover represented floorcare; Care+Protect covered accessories and services; and Haier also presented televisions, air treatment and energy-management ideas.

Haier says hOn covers more than 30 product families and that more than 70% of Haier Europe products are compatible with it. Those are company figures, and compatibility still depends on the exact model and country. Haier later reported more than 10 million registered European hOn users. That indicates reach, but it is not the same as 10 million active users, successful automations or satisfied customers.
Why this felt different from ordinary “smart” appliances
There is a useful distinction between four levels of connected-home technology:
- Remote control: starting a cycle or checking a notification in an app.
- Automation: coordinating appliances or scheduling an operation.
- Adaptive operation: changing settings in response to sensors or detected conditions.
- Proactive assistance: learning context and recommending—or potentially initiating—a useful action.
Many smart appliances stop at the first level. Haier’s strongest IFA pitch was that its products could move toward the latter two. The benefit is not that an appliance has an app; it is that the owner may have fewer decisions to make.

Some of these features are conventional sensor-based automation, some are app services, and some are marketed as AI. Treating them all as one category would make the technology sound more mysterious than it is. The important consumer question is simpler: does the feature reduce work, prevent mistakes, reduce waste or improve results?
AI-assisted laundry was the clearest case for useful automation
Haier’s announced “Next Generation” laundry range was among the most practical demonstrations. Its proposed features included AI Wash Sense, using nine sensors to optimise washing; AI Vision, using a camera to inspect laundry and provide guidance; and AI Washing Memory, which is intended to learn habits and suggest cycles.
The range also included Ultra Reverse Drum, Ultra Sense and Flexy Air, described as a five-level drying system. Within hOn, Haier highlighted care-label decoding, eco planning and washer-dryer synchronisation.

This is a better use of intelligence than putting a decorative screen on a washing machine. A system that correctly identifies a load, recommends a suitable cycle and coordinates washing with drying could save time and reduce avoidable mistakes. Care-label interpretation could also help users who routinely guess whether an item can be washed or dried.

The unanswered questions are whether the system improves stain removal or fabric care in independent testing, how much energy it saves, how often its recommendations are wrong, and whether users can easily override them. A camera may also have difficulty with garments that obscure one another, unusual fabrics, heavy stains, poor lighting or an overloaded drum.
Haier’s IFA announcements establish that these features were demonstrated or announced. The available coverage does not establish independent long-term performance, failure rates or measured savings against competing machines.
Food storage is more useful than a refrigerator touchscreen
Haier’s refrigerator concepts focused on preservation and dispensing rather than turning the fridge door into another tablet. Features included Protein Bank or Nutri Bank-style preservation drawers, AI Vision food recognition, Ice & Water Enhance, Hydro Hub water dispensing and Absolute Ice for cubed and crushed ice.
In Haier’s description, AI Vision can identify food, record where it was placed and when, and adjust preservation conditions. That addresses a genuine household problem: forgotten perishables and unnecessary food waste. A refrigerator that helps a user understand what is inside it could be more valuable than one that merely displays notifications.

Connected cooking could improve outcomes—if it does not add chores
Haier presented Bionic Steam ovens and the Steam ID 2 range, with humidity sensing intended to adjust steam automatically. The hOn app also offers recipes and remote monitoring. Candy’s cooking products included No Preheat and FullMenu features, while Haier showed I-Master Series 5 coffee machines and new air fryers.
Humidity sensing has a direct connection to cooking quality. In principle, an oven that responds to the conditions inside its cavity can be more useful than one that simply accepts a remote command. Recipe guidance may also help users choose settings and timings.
The catch is setup and maintenance. Smart cooking is worthwhile only if recipes are supported, sensors remain accurate, cleaning is manageable and the app does not make basic cooking slower. Remote monitoring is a convenience, not a substitute for checking food or following safe cooking practice.

Haier also highlighted Biovitae, described as a UV-free LED system intended to sanitise the dishwasher interior and its contents. Secondary reporting has repeated a claim of up to 99.99% surface sanitation.
That number needs context. “Up to” does not describe every load or surface, and the result depends on the organisms tested, exposure time, surfaces, test protocol and applicable regulatory standards. It is also important to distinguish between sanitising internal surfaces after a cycle, improving cleaning performance, reducing odour and making dishes safe for use. Those are not interchangeable outcomes.
For now, Biovitae is best understood as a claimed feature rather than a proven reason to choose one dishwasher over another.

The sustainability pitch needs household context
Haier linked its connected appliances with energy management, photovoltaic systems and air treatment. The company has also reported a 98% waste-recovery rate, zero-waste certification for Turkish plants and a target of 60% renewable energy for sites by 2025.
Haier’s post-IFA materials described products positioned above the European A energy class, including an X11 washing machine at A-70%, a dryer at A-10% and a dishwasher at A-50%. These figures must be read according to the relevant European energy-label methodology and the exact models involved. They are not predictions of a household’s bill reduction.
An ecosystem can help schedule loads, coordinate appliances and make energy use visible. But information is not the same as savings. Real-world results depend on load size, selected cycles, ambient conditions, tariffs and user behaviour. The decisive test is whether automation changes consumption—not simply whether the app displays it.

European announcements are not global availability
This was primarily a Haier Europe story. A product shown at IFA may be a demonstration unit, a future launch or an existing European model; it is not automatically available in every market.
American readers should be particularly careful. Haier’s global materials associate the U.S. connected-home environment with GE Appliances and SmartHQ, while hOn is associated with the European portfolio. The two ecosystems should not be treated as interchangeable. Check the exact model, app region, voltage, installation requirements, warranty and service network before buying.

“Connected” does not mean open
The IFA material does not establish broad support for Matter, Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Home Assistant, local APIs or offline local control. A shared manufacturer app can be convenient, but it can also create lock-in. The more appliances depend on hOn, the more disruptive it may be to replace one product with a competing brand.

Cloud dependence is a long-term risk
Before buying, find out what remains available during an internet outage, account lockout, router change, app failure or Haier server outage. Core manual operation may continue, while recommendations, remote monitoring, history and automations may not.
Also check how long software is supported, whether subscriptions or consumables are involved, whether a failed camera or connectivity module disables ordinary operation, and whether replacement parts are available. A connected appliance is still a long-term hardware purchase.
Privacy requires more than a marketing assurance
AI Vision cameras and habit-learning systems raise practical questions: is processing performed locally or in the cloud, what data is retained, can camera features be disabled, and is an account mandatory? Haier Europe publishes IoT and connectivity information, but the relevant model-specific privacy policy remains more important than a general promise about security.

Haier’s ecosystem versus an open smart home

Haier is most persuasive when the buyer wants several compatible appliances and values convenience over maximum openness. Someone buying one appliance, or someone who prioritises local control and long-term independence from vendor servers, may prefer a different route.
Who should pay attention now?
- Most promising: European buyers replacing several appliances who are comfortable choosing Haier, Candy and Hoover products as one ecosystem.
- Potentially worthwhile: buyers who specifically value adaptive laundry, food-preservation assistance or humidity-aware cooking.
- Poor fit: users who require open protocols, local control, broad third-party integration or immediate U.S. access to the IFA-announced models.
- Wait and see: buyers attracted mainly by the word “AI” until independent testing shows measurable benefits.
Do not attach a price or assume availability from the IFA presentation alone. Verify the exact model number, retail status, current price, installation, warranty, app compatibility and any ongoing service cost.
Verdict
Haier’s IFA 2025 showcase made connected appliances feel more relevant because it focused on reducing decisions and household effort rather than adding novelty controls. AI-assisted laundry, food-preservation support, adaptive cooking and coordinated energy management are more compelling than a phone notification for its own sake.
But the evidence still describes a promising operating model, not a proven superior ecosystem. Haier needs to demonstrate reliable performance outside the showroom, clarify privacy and offline behaviour, maintain long-term software support and make regional availability easier to understand. For the right European buyer, hOn could be a useful reason to stay within one appliance family. For everyone else, the smart choice is to buy the appliance’s core performance first and treat its intelligence as an unproven bonus.
