The quickest way to diagnose a black Samsung TV screen is to see whether the TV can display its own menu or Picture Test. If either appears normally, start with the selected source, external device, HDMI cable, or signal path. If the menu and Picture Test are also black or distorted, the fault is more likely inside the TV or its One Connect system.
First distinguish a screen problem from a power problem: note whether the standby light is on, whether you hear sound, whether a Samsung logo appears, and whether the screen is blank on every source or only one. The steps below are for Samsung TVs in the United States; menu names and availability vary by model and software version.
Identify what “black screen” means on your TV
A blank screen does not point to one specific failed part. Before changing settings, check what the TV is doing:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- No power: There is no standby light and the TV does not respond to its physical power button.
- Power but no picture: The standby light changes or the TV appears to start, but no image or menu is visible.
- Sound but no picture: Audio continues while the screen is black. A backlight problem is possible, but this symptom alone does not identify the failed component.
- “No Signal” message: The display is working well enough to show a message; the TV may be on the wrong input or not receiving a signal from the connected device.
- One source is black: Built-in apps or other inputs work, but a cable box, console, receiver, or streaming device does not.
- Intermittent black screen: The picture disappears after startup or during use. Note whether the TV reboots, flickers, or loses sound too.
Also note whether the Samsung logo appears at startup, whether the remote can change volume or sources, and whether the problem began after a power outage, software update, move, or cable change. Those details help separate a source issue from a TV-side fault.

Safety: Limit home troubleshooting to external connections, controlled resets, and the TV’s built-in diagnostics. Unplug the TV before inspecting or reconnecting cables. Do not open the TV unless you are trained to work around high-voltage electronics; do not press, tap, bend, or squeeze the panel; and do not spray cleaner into ports or vents. If you smell burning, see smoke or visible damage, or hear repeated loud clicking, stop powering the TV and arrange professional service.
Try safe power checks and a reset
Rule out the outlet, cord, and remote
- Press the TV’s physical power button, usually located on the set’s underside or back. If the TV works from that button but not from the remote, try fresh remote batteries.
- Check whether the standby indicator is lit, blinking, or absent. The indicator’s behavior can vary by model, so treat it as a clue rather than a diagnosis.
- Test the wall outlet with a lamp or another known-working device.
- Temporarily bypass the surge protector or power strip and plug the TV directly into a known-good wall outlet. Confirm that both ends of the TV’s power cord are secure.
If the TV remains unresponsive and its standby light never appears from a known-good outlet, Samsung says service may be required. The cause could still be in the cord or internal power electronics rather than the display panel (Samsung power troubleshooting).
Perform a controlled power reset
- Turn the TV off if it responds.
- Unplug it from the wall and disconnect HDMI, USB, antenna, Ethernet, and other accessories.
- Leave it unplugged for at least one minute.
- Plug it directly into the wall and turn it on with the physical power button.
- If it works, reconnect external devices one at a time to see whether one brings the problem back.
Samsung support recommends unplugging the TV for approximately one minute to clear some temporary faults (Samsung reset guidance). This power reset is not a factory reset and normally does not erase accounts, apps, or picture settings.
If the TV menu appears, isolate the source and HDMI path
Press Home, Menu, Volume, or Source. If a menu appears, the screen can display an image, so investigate the selected input and connected equipment before assuming the panel has failed.
Check the selected source and connected device
- Press Source and choose another input or open a built-in app.
- Confirm that the cable box, console, streaming device, or receiver is powered on and awake. Restart that device separately if needed.
- Try a different known-working device on the suspect input, or connect the suspect device to another screen if available.
- If an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, splitter, or capture device sits between the source and TV, temporarily bypass it.
Samsung identifies an inactive external device or incorrect source as possible causes of a black screen. A visible “No Signal” message is especially useful: it means the TV is showing a picture, but the selected input is not providing a usable signal (Samsung black-screen and no-picture troubleshooting).

Test the HDMI cable and input
- Try the same device on another HDMI input.
- Try another device on the original input.
- Substitute a known-good cable and check that both ends are firmly seated.
- For a receiver or other intermediary, test a direct connection from the source to the TV.
- Check that the external device is using a resolution and refresh rate supported by the TV.
These comparisons help locate the failure: if the issue follows one device or cable, that is a stronger suspect than the TV. If it stays with one TV input after testing other devices and cables, the input or TV may need attention.
Run Samsung’s HDMI and Picture Tests
Find the diagnostic menus
On many 2022-and-newer Samsung TVs, the path is All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis. On older models, it may be Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis. Menu labels and available tests vary by model and software version; consult the model’s manual if these paths do not match.
Where available, use HDMI Troubleshooting on newer models. Some older TVs instead offer Signal Information → HDMI Cable Test → Start Test. Samsung says its HDMI cable test is designed for cables shorter than approximately 6 feet (2 meters); results may be unreliable with longer cables.
Use Picture Test to separate TV from source
Select Picture Test in Self Diagnosis. The TV generates its own test image, so this is more informative than judging only an HDMI source:
| Test result | What it points toward | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Picture Test looks normal | External device, source selection, cable, signal, or settings | Continue isolating the device and HDMI path. |
| Picture Test is black or defective too | Possible TV-side, software, or One Connect fault | Try the power reset and arrange service if the issue persists. |
| Lines, flicker, distortion, or missing areas appear in the test | Possible display hardware or panel-related issue | Record the result and contact Samsung or a qualified repair provider. |
| Menu works but a streaming app is black | Possible app, network, account, content-protection, or software issue | Test another app and source; update the TV if the menus remain usable. |
Samsung’s Picture Test guidance treats a normal test image as evidence that the issue is more likely in the connected device, cable, or signal; a faulty test image can indicate a need for TV service (Samsung picture troubleshooting). A section of the menu or test image that remains black is more concerning than a single failed external source.

If the menu is also black
After checking power and doing the one-minute reset, see whether the TV can show its own Picture Test. If no menu or test image is available, do not try to navigate settings blindly. Disconnect external devices and, on a One Connect model, check the box and its cable as described below. If the screen remains blank, a TV-side problem becomes more likely and professional diagnosis is appropriate.

Use a flashlight only as a clue
With the room dim, shine a flashlight at an angle close to the screen. A faint image may suggest that the TV is producing a picture but not illuminating it properly, which can point toward an LED backlight or related power circuit. This is not a definitive test: other faults can cause similar symptoms, and a flashlight result does not identify a specific failed part. Do not open the TV to investigate.
Check One Connect models separately
Some Samsung TVs route connections through a One Connect Box; not every model has one. That adds possible failure points beyond the TV itself, including the box, its power connection, the TV-to-box cable, the TV-side connector, and devices attached to the box.
- Turn off and unplug the TV and One Connect Box before reconnecting anything.
- Check that the TV-to-box cable is fully seated at both ends. Do not substitute an unapproved cable.
- Disconnect external devices from the box, then reconnect power and test the TV.
- If the picture returns, add external devices back one at a time to identify a possible source or cable problem.
Samsung’s One Connect troubleshooting directs owners toward service if the TV is powered on but, when disconnected from the One Connect Box, displays no message or picture (Samsung black-screen and no-picture troubleshooting).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Update software or reset settings only when the menu works
If the TV can display menus, check for a software update through its Settings menu. Keep the TV powered on during an update; Samsung notes that picture and audio settings may return to defaults after some updates. Do not attempt blind menu navigation if the screen is unusable. Use the model-specific manual or Samsung support for the correct procedure.

A factory reset is a later option, not the first fix. Consider it only when the menu is usable, the problem affects built-in apps or multiple sources, and a power reset and available software update have not helped. The reset removes user settings and may require signing in again; menu paths differ by model, so confirm the exact model code before proceeding.
What common symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
- Sound with a black screen: A backlight fault is possible, especially if a faint image is visible under a flashlight, but main-board, power-board, panel, software, and source problems can overlap.
- No standby light and no response: Check the outlet, cord, and power strip first. If those are ruled out, internal power or control electronics may require service.
- Logo appears, then the screen goes black: A startup software problem, backlight, power board, main board, or overheating could be involved. Disconnect peripherals and reset; update only if menus become usable.
- Only one HDMI source fails: Suspect that source, cable, input, receiver, or an HDCP handshake before the TV’s display panel.
- Built-in apps work but a cable box does not: Restart the box, verify the source, bypass any receiver, and test another cable or port.
- Lines, a persistent half-screen failure, a large black region, cracks, or impact marks: If also visible in the Picture Test, a panel or display-electronics fault is more likely.
- Flicker followed by black, or repeated on/off cycling: Test another source and disconnect accessories; if it persists, seek service. Stop using the set if it becomes unusually hot or smells burnt.
These symptoms help narrow the next test; they do not identify a board or component with certainty. Internal power-board testing can expose dangerous voltages, and replacing LED strips, boards, or a panel requires opening the set. A screen-panel replacement is large, fragile work and is often uneconomical for an out-of-warranty TV.
Decide whether to repair or replace
Repair is more compelling when
- The TV is within its manufacturer warranty or an applicable protection plan.
- The fault is an external cable, source device, power strip, or fixable software issue.
- The TV is relatively new, large, premium, or costly to replace, and a technician provides a clear estimate for a board or backlight repair.
- The repair includes a meaningful parts-and-labor warranty and parts are available.
Replacement deserves consideration when
- The panel is damaged or defective outside warranty, especially if the quote involves panel replacement.
- The written estimate approaches the cost of a comparable replacement.
- The TV is older, has several other faults, parts are unavailable, or the repair has little warranty coverage.
- Physical or liquid damage is involved. Samsung says physical damage is not covered by its warranty guidance, though the applicable warranty or protection plan determines actual coverage.
Samsung does not publish one universal TV repair price: its U.S. portal says cost depends on diagnosis, warranty status, model, and repair type. Request a written estimate rather than relying on generic online ranges (Samsung U.S. repair request and status portal).
Questions to ask before approving work
- Is the diagnosis fee credited toward the repair?
- Which component failed, and is the panel involved?
- Are the parts genuine Samsung parts, and what warranty covers parts and labor?
- Does the estimate include pickup, in-home service, removal, or remounting?
- Is the repair sensible compared with replacing the TV?
Prepare for a service request
Samsung advises having the model code, software version, and serial number available when seeking support. Collect these details and the diagnostic results before contacting service (Samsung picture troubleshooting).
- Exact model code and serial number, from the rear label or Settings menu if accessible.
- Purchase date, receipt, and any warranty or protection-plan details.
- Whether the problem affects every source or only one, and whether sound continues.
- Whether the menu or Picture Test appears, and the result of any HDMI test.
- When the issue began and whether it followed a power event, update, move, or cable change.
- Photos or a short video of the symptom, plus the troubleshooting steps already tried.
- Whether the TV uses a One Connect Box.
Samsung’s U.S. repair portal can be used to request service and check repair status; availability depends on location, model, parts, and the diagnosis. If a TV-side failure is established, use the portal to check current service options rather than assuming every out-of-warranty model can be repaired.
