A tiny bright dot that stays in the same place across your OLED TV’s menus, apps and inputs is more likely a pixel or panel problem than a flaw in a movie. Specks that move with the picture or appear on only one device point more toward the source or signal. Check the TV’s built-in picture test before deciding whether to clean, run panel care, or seek a return or repair.
First, identify what the spot looks like
“White spot” can describe several different symptoms, and appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. OLED pixels emit their own light and can switch off individually, so a point that remains illuminated may stand out against a dark scene. But a source artifact, surface debris, image retention or panel variation can also become more noticeable on black. LG’s OLED overview explains the self-lit pixel principle.

A dead pixel typically stays dark; a stuck pixel or subpixel may remain red, green, blue or bright when it should change. A “hot” pixel is a practical term for a point that stays lit against dark content. Manufacturers may use the broader term defective pixel. Sony notes that pixels that do not change color can occur on LCD and OLED screens, and that dust or debris can resemble a pixel defect (Sony’s pixel and screen-cleaning guidance).

A dark scene supplies a nearly black background, so even a small amount of unintended light can be conspicuous. That makes a fixed bright pixel easier to notice, but it does not prove the panel is failing: dark scenes can also expose faint uniformity differences, temporary retention or specks in the source. HDR highlights against black may increase the contrast, but HDR alone is not a diagnosis.

Run this quick TV-versus-source check
- Compare content. Try another programme or streaming service, a built-in app, and another HDMI device if available. If the spot occurs only on one channel, app or device, check its connection and signal; try a different HDMI cable or input. LG likewise recommends checking devices, connections and whether the symptom is limited to one source (LG’s troubleshooting guidance).
- Check the home screen and menus. A speck that remains in the same physical place over menus as well as programmes is less likely to be embedded in one video.
- Run the TV’s built-in Picture Test, if available. Follow the instructions for your model; menu labels differ. A mark that appears in the test as well as menus points toward the TV. If the test is clean but a particular programme is not, investigate that source. LG’s guidance recommends a Picture Test when lines or spots persist (LG Picture Test guidance).
- Notice whether it is fixed. A dot in the same screen location across changing pictures suggests a display-side issue. Specks that travel with the picture suggest the content, processing or signal.
Judge test-pattern results fairly. A gray pattern in a dark room may reveal mild banding that is not noticeable during normal viewing; that is different from a sharp bright dot that distracts during everyday content. Smartphone exposure can exaggerate both. Do not use an overexposed photo or one extreme test pattern as the only basis for a diagnosis.
Clean gently before calling it a pixel defect
- Turn the TV off and let the panel cool.
- Use a clean, soft, dry microfiber cloth and wipe lightly. Do not press on the screen.
- Do not spray liquid on the panel or use paper towels, abrasive materials, alcohol, window cleaner or household solvents.
- Turn the TV back on and check the same screen location.
Surface debris can look like a defective pixel, which is why Sony recommends cleaning gently before drawing that conclusion (Sony support). Do not rub, massage or press a bright point: pressure can damage the panel.

Should you run Pixel Cleaning or Pixel Refresh?
Panel-care features go by names such as Pixel Cleaning, Pixel Refresher, Panel Refresh or Panel Calibration. Their purpose and operation vary by model. An approved cycle may help with certain temporary image-retention or picture abnormalities, but it is not a reliable way to revive a physically failed pixel, repair a cracked panel or fix a damaged driver circuit. A panel-care cycle is a reasonable single troubleshooting step when the manufacturer recommends it—not a cure to repeat until a defect disappears.
For LG TVs, the company says Pixel Cleaning can address some spots, lines and retention symptoms; a manual run may take at least an hour. Keep the TV connected to power and do not interrupt the process. LG says automatic maintenance can run after the TV is turned off, so switching off a power strip or unplugging the set may prevent it (LG Pixel Cleaning information; LG’s maintenance instructions).

LG’s listed menu paths are examples; model and software versions can differ:
- 2022 and newer, webOS 22+: Settings → All Settings → General → OLED Care → OLED Panel Care → Pixel Cleaning.
- 2021, webOS 6.0: Settings → All Settings → Support → OLED Care → OLED Panel Care → Pixel Cleaning.
- 2020, webOS 5.0: Settings → All Settings → Picture → OLED Screen Saver → Pixel Refresher.
- 2019, webOS 4.5: Settings → All Settings → Picture → Additional Settings → OLED Panel Settings → Pixel Refresher.
- 2018 and older, webOS 4.0 or earlier: Settings → All Settings → Picture → OLED Panel Settings → Pixel Refresher.
If your menu differs, check the support page or manual for your exact model rather than guessing. Sony also describes pixel shift and panel calibration as tools intended to reduce image-retention or non-uniformity effects; their labels and paths vary by TV (Sony panel-care information).

Retention, burn-in, banding and a bright pixel are not the same

When to stop troubleshooting and seek an exchange or repair
- TV still in its return period: Test promptly and check the retailer’s return or exchange terms before spending time on repeated maintenance. For a conspicuous fixed spot on a new set, an exchange may be preferable to waiting on a repair decision.
- Spot is fixed and appears in menus and Picture Test: Document it and contact the retailer or manufacturer. One approved panel-care cycle is a reasonable limit if the maker recommends it.
- Multiple spots, a line, flicker, a growing area or edge deterioration: Seek service promptly. Photograph the progression and avoid pressure or DIY disassembly.
- Only a faint test-pattern band is visible: Consider whether it is noticeable in ordinary viewing, and compare it with the retailer’s terms and manufacturer policy. A revealing test is useful evidence, not by itself proof of a covered defect.
- Out of warranty: Get a model-specific repair estimate before authorizing work. Whether repair is worthwhile depends on the panel, age and quote; replacement is not automatically the better choice.
Will warranty cover a bad pixel?
There is no universal rule that one stuck or dead pixel guarantees a replacement—or that it must be accepted. Check three separate terms: the retailer’s return/exchange policy, the TV’s limited warranty, and the brand’s pixel-defect or service policy. Coverage can depend on country, model, screen size, defect count and grouping, location, sale condition (new, open-box or refurbished), and the manufacturer’s assessment.
For example, a cited LG U.S. warranty document for certain G1, G2, Z2, G3 and M3 models specifies one year of parts and labor, then years two through five of OLED panel coverage with labor charged; it also excludes some minor pixel non-functionality and imperfections. Those terms apply to the listed models and document, not all LG OLEDs or other regions (the cited LG warranty document). Read the warranty supplied with your own TV and confirm current local terms with the maker.
Before contacting support, gather:
- Model and serial number; purchase date and retailer.
- Number, approximate size and location of spots.
- Whether the issue appears on all inputs, the home screen, menus and built-in Picture Test.
- Whether you ran the approved panel-care cycle, and when.
- Photos or video showing both the full screen and a close-up, without extreme exposure.
- Any relevant history of impact, moisture, transport or repair.
How to reduce avoidable OLED panel stress
Use the TV’s automatic panel-care features as directed and leave the set connected to power when its manufacturer requires it for maintenance. Avoid leaving bright static logos, clocks or game HUDs on screen for long periods; varied content and built-in safeguards can reduce image-retention risk, though they cannot guarantee that a panel will never develop a defect. Clean only with a soft dry cloth, and never press the panel. If you have a fixed spot, diagnosis and timely documentation matter more than repeated “pixel repair” videos or refresh cycles.
