Whirlpool vs. Samsung Refrigerators: Which Brand Is Better for Your Kitchen?

Whirlpool is the safer default if you want a conventional refrigerator with fewer features to manage; Samsung is the better fit if you will use its flexible layouts, connected features, or specialty ice. Neither brand is a dependable universal winner. The exact model, refrigerator style, ice-maker arrangement, local repair coverage, and fit in your kitchen matter more than the logo.

For a remodel or replacement, compare the model number and dimensions before choosing finishes or cabinetry. A refrigerator that looks right on a showroom floor can be a poor fit if its doors, drawers, or delivery path conflict with the kitchen.

Whirlpool vs. Samsung at a glance

Factor Whirlpool Samsung
Best fit Shoppers who prefer familiar layouts, conventional controls, and fewer smart features Shoppers who specifically want flexible compartments, connected features, distinctive design, or specialty ice
Lineup Top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French-door, side-by-side, and selected connected or specialty models Top-freezer through four-door and Bespoke models, with selected screens, beverage features, flexible zones, and specialty ice
Reliability evidence Some strong individual models; simplicity may reduce the number of systems to troubleshoot, but does not guarantee reliability Some strong individual models, particularly in narrow top-freezer testing; feature-heavy models deserve model-specific scrutiny
Warranty signal Check the exact model’s warranty documentation; terms vary Generally one year parts and labor, five years on the sealed system, and ten years parts plus five years labor on the digital inverter compressor; verify the model terms
Main caution Do not assume every Whirlpool model is reliable or easy to repair Do not pay for screens, dispensers, or connected features you will not use; extra systems add complexity

Both brands sell refrigerators across several styles, so a comparison between brand names alone can obscure the real choice. See the current Whirlpool refrigerator lineup and Samsung Bespoke range, then compare exact model numbers and configurations.

Reliability: compare the model and its features, not just the badge

Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability reporting draws on more than 71,534 refrigerators with icemakers, purchased new between 2015 and 2025. It identifies icemakers and water-and-ice dispensers as common trouble spots, estimating that 31% of refrigerators equipped with icemakers develop a problem by the end of year five. That figure is a broad finding about refrigerators with icemakers, not a failure rate for every Whirlpool or Samsung model. Read Consumer Reports’ reliability findings.

#1 Best Overall
Whirlpool WRSC5536RZ 20.59 Cu. Ft. Stainless Side-by-Side Counter-Depth Freestanding Refrigerator
  • User Manuals: Included for easy reference
  • Spacious 36-inch Side-by-Side Refrigerator: Offers 20.85 cu. ft. capacity for ample food storage
  • Easy Freestanding Installation: Simplifies setup process
  • Seamless Counter-Depth Design: Integrates perfectly with surrounding cabinetry
  • Flexible Storage with Wall-to-Wall Shelves: Frameless, adjustable glass shelves for versatile organization

Model-level results in the 2026 Consumer Reports Buying Guide show why a simple brand verdict is misleading. In its narrow top-freezer group, the Samsung RT70F18LRSR scored 82 and the RT16A6195SR scored 78, compared with 74 for the Whirlpool WRT112CZJZ. In the listed wide French-door models, the Whirlpool WRF555SDFZ and WRX735SDHZ each scored 70, while the Samsung Bespoke RF23BB8900AW and RF90F29AECRAA each scored 55. The Whirlpool WRB322DMBM bottom-freezer scored 76.

These are scores for specific models in particular categories, not proof that one whole brand will last longer. The refrigerators differ in style and features, and a test score should be read alongside the specific dimensions, controls, ice system, and warranty you are considering. Historical complaints about one model or generation should not be treated as a verdict on every current model from that brand.

A simpler refrigerator may have fewer systems to troubleshoot, but that is an engineering-based reason to compare complexity—not proof that every simple model is cheaper or easier to repair. Before buying, check whether authorized service and independent technicians serve your ZIP code, and ask about parts availability for the precise model.

Cooling, food preservation, noise, and energy

There is no sound basis in the supplied model evidence to declare that Whirlpool or Samsung universally cools food better. Consumer Reports evaluates separate measures—including thermostat performance, temperature uniformity, crisper performance, freezer performance, noise, ease of use, and energy efficiency—rather than treating “cooling” as one result. Look up the scorecard for the exact refrigerator and pay attention to the measures that matter to your household.

Energy use can change the ownership-cost comparison. The 2026 guide lists estimated annual energy costs of $45.62 for the Samsung RT70F18LRSR, $45.89 for the RT16A6195SR, and $45.89 for the Whirlpool WRT112CZJZ. It lists $77.67 for the Whirlpool WRB322DMBM; $91.11 for the WRF555SDFZ; $90.84 for the WRX735SDHZ; $82.19 for the Samsung RF23BB8900AW; and $88.18 for the RF90F29AECRAA. These are guide estimates, not a promise of your bill: electricity rates, usage, and conditions affect actual costs.

Rank #2
Whirlpool WRB329DMBM 18.5 Cu. Ft. Stainless Steel Bottom Freezer Refrigerator
  • SpillGuard Glass Shelves for Easy Cleanup This refrigerator features SpillGuard glass shelves that help contain leaks and spills, so messes stay on the shelf and don’t drip down onto lower shelves. The transparent design also brightens the interior and makes it easier to find what you need quickly.
  • FreshFlow Produce Preserver & Food Freshness The FreshFlow produce preserver helps extend the life of fruits and vegetables by absorbing excess ethylene gas — one of the main causes of produce spoilage. This helps keep your fresh foods tasting better for up to about 4 days longer depending on how often the door is opened.
  • Smart Temperature & Energy Efficiency This Whirlpool bottom-freezer fridge is ENERGY STAR qualified, meaning it’s designed to exceed federal efficiency standards — helping save money on your utility bills and use less energy overall. It also uses an Adaptive Defrost system to run defrost cycles only when needed, which reduces energy use and avoids unnecessary temperature swings.
  • Accu-Chill Temperature Management & Lighting The Accu-Chill temperature management system helps keep fresh food at consistent, optimal temperatures by sensing when more cooling is needed and adjusting the compressor accordingly. Bright LED interior lighting makes it easy to see and organize all your groceries with better visibility throughout the refrigerator compartments.
  • Bottom-Freezer Layout & Everyday Convenience The bottom-freezer design places the refrigerated section at eye level for easier access to fresh foods, while the freezer drawer below provides organized storage for frozen goods. Standard features include a factory-installed ice maker in the freezer and adjustable shelving configurations that let you customize storage as your needs change.

The same guide’s listed prices are reference points, not guaranteed current retail prices: $579 for the RT70F18LRSR, $762 for the RT16A6195SR, $628 for the WRT112CZJZ, $1,598 for the WRB322DMBM, $1,798 for the WRF555SDFZ, $2,098 for the WRX735SDHZ, $1,305 for the RF23BB8900AW, and $3,200 for the RF90F29AECRAA. Prices and availability change; verify the exact model and live price before ordering.

Capacity also needs context. Advertised cubic feet do not tell you whether shelves fit a wide platter, drawers open fully, or door bins suit your shopping habits. The guide reports usable capacity as well as listed volume; inspect the interior layout and measure the storage that you actually need.

Layouts and features: what you gain—and what you take on

Whirlpool offers familiar top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French-door, and side-by-side arrangements, along with selected organization-focused, connected, dispenser, and specialty-ice models. Its broader range includes conventional options without making large screens and connected features central to every model. Review the current Whirlpool lineup; features differ by refrigerator.

Samsung offers selected four-door configurations, FlexZone compartments that can switch between refrigerator and freezer modes, beverage centers and internal water pitchers, Family Hub screens, and specialty ice. Some Bespoke models also offer a zero-clearance hinge design. These are model-specific options, not standard equipment across the brand. Samsung’s feature range is on its Bespoke refrigerator pages.

These features are worthwhile when they solve a real need: a convertible zone for changing grocery loads, a pitcher for frequent water use, or a screen that your household will actually use. Otherwise, extra compartments, sensors, displays, and door systems can mean more components to maintain without improving basic refrigeration. Smart features can also outlive their usefulness before the appliance itself does; do not assume an app, camera, or screen will receive identical support throughout the refrigerator’s mechanical life.

Whirlpool WRB329DMBW 18.5 Cu. Ft. White Bottom Freezer Refrigerator
  • ENERGY STAR qualified and CEE Tier I rated. Designed to conserve natural resources and help save you money on utility bills, this eco-friendly refrigerator is better for the environment and your wallet
  • 12.94 cu. ft. fresh food compartment and 5.73 cu. ft. freezer compartment provide spacious storage options
  • Adjustable door bins and a stationary bottom shelf provide flexible in-door storage options

Samsung is the clearer choice if you want deep SmartThings integration, Family Hub, selected AI functions, or its distinctive configurations. Certain connected functions require Wi-Fi and a Samsung account. A stable network and comfort with the account and privacy implications are part of the purchase decision. Whirlpool also sells selected connected models, but its lineup places less emphasis on large displays and kitchen-management features.

Ice makers and water dispensers deserve special attention

Ice and water systems are a major source of potential inconvenience for either brand. An automatic ice maker or dispenser can involve a water valve, tubing, filter, sensors, and additional controls; door-mounted arrangements add components in the door. Failures may cause a leak, clog, noise, or repair call even when the refrigerator still cools normally.

Samsung offers several ice configurations, including specialty ice on selected Bespoke models. Whirlpool’s lineup includes external dispensers, interior ice storage, large-capacity icemakers, and selected nugget-ice designs. The right choice is not simply which brand advertises more ice options: check where the ice maker sits, how much ice it makes, how quickly it recovers, filter price and availability, and whether the refrigerator can keep cooling if the ice maker stops working.

  • For fewer water-system components: consider a model with no dispenser or automatic ice maker.
  • For ice with less door complexity: look for an ice maker located in the freezer, and confirm this on the exact model’s specification sheet.
  • For drinking water: compare an internal dispenser or pitcher with a door-mounted dispenser.
  • For any filtered model: check the genuine replacement filter’s availability and ongoing cost before purchase.

These are ways to reduce complexity, not guarantees against failure. Do not assume a past problem reported for one model applies to every newer model from the same brand; inspect the specific configuration and seek model-specific reliability information.

Warranty and service: read what each period actually covers

Samsung’s U.S. warranty page generally describes one year of parts-and-labor coverage, five years of sealed-system coverage, and ten years of parts plus five years of labor for the digital inverter compressor. Coverage is model-specific; consult the Samsung refrigerator warranty and the terms supplied with the exact model.

Coverage area Samsung’s general U.S. warranty signal What to verify
Standard appliance coverage One year parts and labor Exact start date, exclusions, and eligible service
Sealed refrigeration system Five years Which parts qualify and whether labor is included for the full period
Digital inverter compressor Ten years parts; five years labor That the failure qualifies and what service costs remain your responsibility

A ten-year compressor-parts period is not ten years of full refrigerator protection. It does not automatically cover an icemaker, dispenser, control board, fan, gasket, shelf, water valve, or labor beyond the stated period. Nor does a long warranty prove a low likelihood of failure; it limits exposure for only the components and work specified in its terms.

As of September 24, 2026, Samsung’s warranty page advertises a limited-time two-year manufacturer-warranty promotion for eligible purchases through September 30, 2026. Eligibility, participating retailers, models, and redemption requirements apply. Treat it as a time-limited offer, not the standard warranty, and confirm the terms before purchase on Samsung’s warranty page.

Whirlpool coverage varies by model and component. Use the warranty documentation for the exact model rather than assuming a universal term. For either brand, the practical value of a warranty depends on authorized technician availability, parts supply, and service delays in your area. A retailer’s delivery, installation, haul-away, and return policies also matter—especially if a refrigerator does not fit or arrives with a problem. Compare any protection plan’s exclusions and whether it covers labor or food loss instead of assuming an extended plan is worthwhile.

Which brand should you choose by refrigerator type?

  • Top-freezer: Often the straightforward choice for shoppers prioritizing low cost and simplicity. The Samsung RT70F18LRSR and RT16A6195SR posted higher scores than the Whirlpool WRT112CZJZ in the listed 2026 Consumer Reports narrow top-freezer comparison. Check current availability, exact configuration, and fit before treating any as a candidate.
  • Bottom-freezer: A useful compromise if you want refrigerator food at eye level without a large feature set. The Whirlpool WRB322DMBM scored 76 in the guide; inspect its configuration and the alternatives available in your size range.
  • French-door: Offers wide refrigerator shelves and flexible organization, but multiple doors, drawers, and ice systems can raise complexity. Among the listed models, the Whirlpool WRF555SDFZ and WRX735SDHZ scored 70, versus 55 for the two listed Samsung French-door models. These are model results, not a brand-wide forecast.
  • Side-by-side: Convenient when a narrower door swing suits the kitchen, but the vertical compartments can make wide items harder to store. Compare shelf width and door clearance in person or on the exact dimensional drawings.
  • Four-door or smart: Samsung has the stronger selection if flexible zones, a beverage center, specialty ice, or connected controls are priorities. Buy the specific functions you expect to use, and first confirm service coverage and model-specific evidence.

If reliability and low complexity are your priorities, begin with either brand’s simplest model that fits your kitchen—ideally without a door dispenser—and compare model-specific test results. Whirlpool’s conventional range makes it a natural place to start, but the stronger top-freezer scores in this guide belong to Samsung models. A brand slogan cannot substitute for the exact comparison.

Measure before you order

For a kitchen renovation, confirm both appliance dimensions and the space the appliance needs to operate. Get the installation drawing for the exact model; do not use a broad brand-category page as a substitute.

  1. Measure the opening: record width, height, and depth, including trim, counters, and any uneven walls. Check the appliance’s ventilation and leveling requirements.
  2. Check door and drawer movement: allow for doors to open, hinge-side clearance, drawers and bins to pull out, and nearby islands or cabinets. A refrigerator can fit the opening but block a walkway or prevent a drawer from opening.
  3. Measure the full depth: account for doors and handles, and decide whether a counter-depth appearance is important. Confirm how far the doors project and whether they need clearance to open.
  4. Trace the delivery path: measure exterior doors, interior doors, hallways, stairs, and turns from the truck to the kitchen. Ask the retailer whether doors can be removed for delivery and whether reassembly is included.
  5. Locate utilities: note the water-line and electrical-outlet positions, and verify that connections will not be crushed or obstructed behind the refrigerator.
  6. Check the final fit: confirm the appliance can be leveled and ventilated without contacting cabinetry, and that it can be pulled out later for service.

Samsung likewise advises checking dimensions, door clearance, and ventilation requirements on product pages. Use the exact model’s dimensions and installation information as an example of the detail to confirm; other models have different requirements.
