For most rooms, place the soundbar centered directly below the TV, with its front facing the seating area and its speaker grille unobstructed. Keep it as close to seated ear height as your TV and furniture allow. If the bar has Dolby Atmos up-firing speakers, leave a clear path to the ceiling; a blocked driver or poorly chosen mounting height can matter more than the bar’s price.
The best place for a soundbar
Start with the TV and seating position, then check the soundbar’s installation guide. The usual arrangement is simple:
- Center the bar horizontally with the screen.
- Place it below the TV when possible, close enough that dialogue seems to come from the picture.
- Aim its front face toward the main seats.
- Keep the grille, side-firing speakers and any upward-firing speakers clear.
- Set the bar on a stable, level surface or mount it using hardware approved for that model.
Avoid pushing the bar behind the TV, hiding it inside a closed cabinet, or placing it behind a shelf lip. Those positions can block or reflect sound, making dialogue dull or congested. Calibration may improve a sensible setup, but it cannot fully compensate for an obstructed speaker.
Cabinet placement or wall mounting?

Cabinet placement is usually easier to install and adjust. Wall mounting can make a cleaner arrangement, but the bar should normally go below the TV rather than above it. Dolby describes below-TV mounting as generally preferable; mounting above the screen can make dialogue sound as if it comes from too high. If that is the only workable position, verify that the product supports it and recalibrate.

Clearance is model-specific, not a universal gap. For example, Sonos specifies at least 4 inches (10.2 cm) between a wall-mounted Arc and the TV, plus at least 1 foot (30 cm) from walls or obstructions at either end for best audio quality. Do not apply those Arc measurements to another soundbar; check its manual.
How high should the soundbar be?
There is no universal floor measurement or fixed distance below the screen. Use this order of priorities:
- Do not block the screen, controls, ventilation or any speaker drivers.
- Keep the bar below the TV if practical.
- For direct sound, aim to put the main output near the seated listeners’ ear height, without compromising the first two priorities.
- For an Atmos model, preserve the sound path to the ceiling and avoid mounting the bar high.
- Follow the model’s own installation instructions if they differ from generic advice.
Dolby recommends keeping an Atmos soundbar no higher than halfway up the wall from floor to ceiling for the best height effects, and describes below-TV placement near ear level as ideal when possible. See Dolby’s soundbar setup guidance and its Atmos soundbar placement guidance. Treat these as room and placement guidance, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s specified clearances.

If the TV’s bottom edge blocks the bar, try a lower shelf, a stable TV riser with enough clearance, lowering the TV, or mounting the soundbar below the screen. Raise the TV only if the resulting viewing height remains comfortable. Do not solve the problem by putting the bar above the TV unless its manual allows that arrangement.
Special considerations for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X
Soundbars create a sense of height and surround in different ways: some use speakers that bounce sound off the ceiling or side walls, some use digital processing, and some systems add separate rear speakers. The result depends on the design and the room. For a reflection-based Atmos bar, the upward-firing drivers need a clear path to a reasonably reflective ceiling. Side-firing elements need an unobstructed path toward the listener and the first wall reflection. A TV panel, shelf, décor or nearby furniture in that path can weaken the effect. Dolby explains these placement requirements in its setup guide.
Highly absorbent or vaulted ceilings, open-plan rooms and seating outside the intended coverage can make reflected height effects less convincing. A compatible Atmos or DTS:X label does not guarantee overhead sound in every room: the content, source device, connection, output setting and soundbar mode must all support the format. A separate rear-speaker kit can provide more direct surround information than virtualization, but it needs suitable locations behind or to the sides of the seats.

Atmos connection support also depends on the complete signal path. HDMI ARC/eARC is the general route to use for advanced formats; exact capabilities depend on the TV, source, soundbar, format and settings. Dolby recommends HDMI or ARC/eARC and bitstream output for Atmos playback. Its guide recommends a high-capacity Category 3 HDMI cable; check the equipment requirements rather than assuming every setup needs the same cable specification.

There is no single best subwoofer position for every room. Walls, room dimensions, furniture and the listening seat all affect bass, so the loudest spot may also sound boomy. Start near the front wall beside the TV or bar, on a solid, stable surface, and do not bury the subwoofer in a cabinet.
Then test alternatives from the main listening position. One practical heuristic is the “subwoofer crawl”: temporarily put the subwoofer at the listening seat, play bass-heavy material, and walk around likely locations to find where the bass sounds smoothest. Put the subwoofer there and listen again from the seat. This is a listening method, not a calibrated measurement. If furniture rattles or bass travels through the floor, move the subwoofer, reduce its level, or consider suitable isolation; isolation will not correct a poor room position.

Where to place wireless rear speakers
If your soundbar system includes separate surrounds, place them behind or slightly to the sides of the listening position, with left and right speakers at similar distances from the main seat. Keep them out in the open rather than behind the couch or inside furniture, and leave any upward-firing drivers clear. Use the manufacturer’s specified angle and height where available. Samsung’s placement overview likewise describes rear speakers behind and to the listener’s left and right.
If the sofa is against a wall, side placement or modest wall mounting may be more practical; follow the system’s guidance and recalibrate. A soundbar can virtualize surround, but that is not the same as having physical speakers behind the listener.

Connect the soundbar to the TV
For a compatible HDMI ARC/eARC setup, connect the TV’s HDMI IN (ARC/eARC) port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC) port. This is the port direction in Sony’s connection instructions. Use the TV port marked ARC or eARC, not an ordinary HDMI input. Some soundbars will not receive TV audio from a standard HDMI port; Sonos notes this for its products in its connection guide.

- Connect the ARC/eARC ports with an appropriate HDMI cable.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV if you want to use the TV remote for soundbar volume.
- Set the TV’s digital audio output to Auto, Passthrough, Bitstream or the equivalent option for that model.
- Select the TV or HDMI ARC input on the soundbar.
- Play known compatible content and check the soundbar’s app or display, if available, to confirm the format it is receiving.
For Atmos, the whole chain must pass the format: source or streaming app, TV or soundbar input, HDMI port, cable and audio settings. If the soundbar receives stereo or PCM instead, check the TV and source output settings and the connected ports before changing speaker placement.
Optical can be a useful fallback if ARC is unavailable or unreliable, or if basic stereo or supported compressed surround is enough. Do not assume it carries every advanced format supported by the soundbar. Capabilities vary by equipment and format, so use HDMI ARC/eARC for Atmos and other advanced audio where the devices support it.
Calibrate and fine-tune after placement
Once the bar, subwoofer and any rear speakers are in position, run the manufacturer’s room-calibration process and enter or confirm the listening position accurately. Test with ordinary television dialogue as well as a known compatible surround or Atmos source. If you move the bar, furniture or seating, run calibration again.
If speech is still hard to understand, first remove obstructions and check the source format. Then try the soundbar’s dialogue or voice-enhancement setting conservatively, and reduce excessive bass if it masks speech. Lip-sync is a separate problem: check TV audio processing, disable unnecessary effects, and use the soundbar’s delay control if available. Sonos documents a TV Dialog Sync adjustment in its Arc guide. Adjust subwoofer level after calibration rather than using it to compensate for a bad position.
Quick fixes for common placement problems

When a soundbar may not suit the room
A low-profile all-in-one bar is convenient, but reflection-based Atmos may disappoint in a room where the ceiling or walls cannot support the sound path. If you can place speakers behind the sofa, a system with separate rears may deliver more direct surround. Music-focused listeners may prefer powered stereo speakers; an AV receiver and separate speakers offer more placement flexibility but require more space, wiring and setup. Choose by the room and the installation you can actually support, not by channel count alone.
