Yes, the Vegeknife was real: Vegemite, owned by Bega Cheese, created a dual-ended spreading knife with one end for butter and the other for Vegemite. It first appeared in a 200-unit competition in 2020, then returned in a 1,000-unit retail release in 2024. It was designed to reduce butter getting into the Vegemite jar, but no independent testing established that it reliably prevents contamination.
What breakfast problem was the Vegeknife meant to solve?
Butter, toast crumbs and other spreads can get into a jar when the same knife moves between foods. Vegemite presented the Vegeknife as a way to keep butter and Vegemite separate and avoid the familiar household argument over a contaminated jar.
Vegemite and Bega cited a company survey in which 58% of respondents said they had experienced unwanted butter in their Vegemite jar. The available reporting does not give the survey’s sample size, method or field dates, so that figure should not be treated as an independently verified national statistic. How was the Vegeknife supposed to work?
It was a single spreading tool with two functional ends, not two detachable knives. The intended routine was simple:

- Turn the tool around and use the other end for Vegemite.
- Keep each end assigned to its spread rather than putting a buttered end back into the Vegemite jar.
The design objective was separation, not a guarantee. A user could still contaminate a jar by choosing the wrong end, touching both ends with spread-covered fingers, or resting the tool on a dirty or buttery surface. The original coverage also pointed out that the arrangement could leave users with spread on their hands. No independent kitchen trial or contamination study is established in the available reporting, so the defensible claim is that the knife was designed to reduce cross-contamination, not that it eliminated it.
Was it a major invention or a normal product launch?
Vegemite promoted the Vegeknife as a novelty product. The word “game-changing” came from publicity and fan reaction; the sources do not establish a first-of-its-kind design, a named individual inventor, a patent, or an independent engineering assessment.

The first release was reported on October 16, 2020, and was a competition rather than an ordinary shop launch: 200 knives were offered. Vegemite’s brand history says more than 20,000 entrants competed for the limited tool. Those 200 units refer to the original promotion, not every Vegeknife ever made.

What happened when the Vegeknife returned in 2024?
On February 29, 2024, identified in the coverage as National Toast Day, Vegemite announced a retail rerelease of 1,000 knives. Retail World reported that the knives were out of stock when its article appeared. That reports the status at publication; it does not prove the product was permanently discontinued.

Can you buy a Vegeknife now?
The documented retail run was limited, and the available official and contemporary reports do not verify current stock or a current price as of August 16, 2026. Treat the Vegeknife as a limited-edition item with a past retail release, not as a generally available kitchen tool. An old official product page is not proof that orders are currently being accepted; a resale listing is not an official price or confirmation of ordinary retail availability.

Vegemite’s FAQ describes Squeezy’s purpose, sizes and relationship to jarred Vegemite. The brand’s history places Squeezy after the Vegeknife as another response to the same butter-and-crumb problem. These are ways to reduce accidental transfer, not evidence that the issue is a demonstrated public-health hazard.
Was the Vegeknife actually “game-changing”?
It was a real, memorable branded gadget that turned a small breakfast annoyance into a product idea. Its two-ended design could help when used consistently, but its practical advantage over two separate knives was not independently demonstrated. Its better-established legacy is as a limited Vegemite collectible: 200 competition units in 2020, followed by a separate 1,000-unit retail run in 2024.
