First, note when the pop happens. A bang while the engine is running or slowing down is a backfire; a pop after the engine has stopped is an afterfire. The distinction matters because the likely causes and operating changes differ. If the mower continues to pop, runs poorly, overheats, or needs work beyond the manual, stop troubleshooting and contact an authorized small-engine service dealer.
Identify when the pop occurs
Briggs & Stratton uses backfire for a loud bang or pop while an engine is running or shutting down, and afterfire for a pop after it has been shut off. Its U.S. FAQ, updated April 6, 2026, says a backfire or afterfire through the carburetor will not harm the engine. That reassurance is limited to those events; it does not establish that every loud noise or accompanying mechanical problem is harmless. Briggs & Stratton’s backfire and afterfire FAQ
- While slowing down or running: Treat it as a backfire and note whether the pop follows a quick reduction in engine speed.
- After the engine has stopped: Treat it as an afterfire and note how the engine was shut down.
What to try before taking anything apart
If it pops while slowing down
When the mower’s controls and manual allow it, reduce engine speed gradually rather than making a rapid change. Briggs & Stratton lists rapid deceleration, higher-alcohol fuel blends, a lean carburetor setting, muffler construction, high engine temperature, and sensitivity in a carburetor transition passage as possible contributors to backfire. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of your mower. The manufacturer says some transition-passage behavior cannot be corrected.
Check the fuel recommendation for the exact engine in its manual; there is no universal fuel rule for every mower. Briggs & Stratton says following the engine’s fuel recommendations or trying a brand with lower or no alcohol may help. Fuel choice will not address every possible cause, such as overheating or muffler construction.

If it pops after shutdown
Briggs & Stratton recommends letting the engine idle down for 15–30 seconds before shutting it off. This is the manufacturer’s guidance, not a universal procedure that overrides the mower or engine manual. Its FAQ separately says to shut the engine off at full throttle if it has an anti-afterfire solenoid. That instruction is conditional on the solenoid being fitted; check the specific equipment manual rather than applying it to every mower.
Inspect and service only when it is safe and model-appropriate
Read both the engine and mower manuals before operating or servicing the equipment. Before repair, disconnect the spark plug lead as directed in the manufacturer’s spark plug instructions. If you cannot safely control fuel or ignition, leave the work to a qualified service dealer.

Spark plug inspection
A plug inspection is routine maintenance, not a confirmed fix for backfiring. If the plug is fouled or damaged, use the plug specified for the engine and follow the manual’s gap information. Briggs & Stratton describes using a spark plug socket to remove a plug; that tool does not make an incorrect plug or gap suitable.
Carburetor work
Do not adjust or rebuild the carburetor as a first response to a pop. Settings and parts depend on the engine and carburetor model. For carburetor work, Briggs & Stratton instructs users to turn off the fuel valve or clamp the fuel line if there is no valve, and warns that fuel may spill when the carburetor is removed. Its carburetor rebuild guidance says some tamper-proof idle screws should be serviced only by a certified dealer. A repair kit is relevant only after confirming that service is needed and matching the kit to the specific engine and carburetor; it is not a universal backfire remedy.

When to call a service dealer
Contact an authorized small-engine service dealer if the popping continues, the engine runs poorly or overheats, a component appears damaged, carburetor adjustment goes beyond the manual, or you are unsure how to service the mower safely. Briggs & Stratton identifies dealers as the best source for further backfire and afterfire guidance and recommends dealer help for advanced troubleshooting. Its general poor-running troubleshooting covers small engines broadly; it does not prove what is causing a particular mower’s symptom.
