Choose a soundbar that is approximately as wide as your TV or slightly narrower—but do not treat the TV’s diagonal size as an exact soundbar requirement. The right choice also depends on your room, seating distance, desired bass and surround effects, placement space, and the TV’s available connections.
Quick soundbar size guide by TV size
These are approximate visual-sizing ranges, not technical compatibility rules. They are a useful starting point based on manufacturer pairing guidance from Samsung’s soundbar buying guide.

A soundbar does not have to match the TV exactly. A bar that is slightly shorter usually looks balanced, while a narrower model can be the better acoustic and practical choice in a small room. A wider bar can also work with a large TV, provided it fits the furniture safely.

Television sizes are measured diagonally from one corner of the screen to the opposite corner. A 55-inch TV is therefore not 55 inches wide.

For a standard 16:9 display, estimate the screen width with this formula:

The outer TV chassis and bezel may make the complete television slightly wider than the visible screen. Measure the actual TV rather than relying only on its advertised diagonal size.
What matters more than soundbar width?
Room size and listening distance
A larger soundbar is not automatically better. A compact bar may perform well when the sofa is close to a 55-inch bedroom TV, while a larger open-plan living room may need a more capable bar, a subwoofer and rear speakers—even if the soundbar is visually similar in width to the TV.

Room volume, ceiling height, open doorways, hard floors, walls and reflective surfaces affect how well a soundbar fills the space. Bose’s soundbar guidance likewise recommends considering the room, reflective surfaces, speaker count and supported audio formats.
Dialogue clarity
If your priority is news, sports and television dramas, a dedicated centre channel or a useful dialogue-enhancement mode may matter more than a wide cabinet. A 3.0 or 3.1 soundbar can provide a more focused centre channel than a basic 2.0 model.
Channel labels describe the speaker layout. In general, 3.1 means left, centre, right and subwoofer channels. 5.1.2 adds surround channels and two height channels. Channel count is not a complete quality score: driver design, processing, placement and room acoustics also matter.

Bass and music
A compact all-in-one soundbar may be enough for speech and everyday programmes. A separate wireless subwoofer is more useful for action films, music, gaming, large rooms and listeners who want physical low-frequency impact. It also allows the main bar to concentrate more on dialogue and midrange sound.
Surround and Dolby Atmos
Dolby Atmos is not determined by cabinet width alone. A wider model may have space for more front-facing, side-firing or up-firing drivers, but a compact bar can still support Atmos. For example, the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is 25.63 inches wide, supports Dolby Atmos and is listed by Sonos for TVs up to 65 inches.
Distinguish between:
- Format support: the soundbar can decode or render an Atmos signal.
- Immersion quality: how convincing the height and surround effects are in your room.
- System expansion: whether you can add a subwoofer and rear speakers later.
Up-firing Atmos drivers depend on suitable reflections from the ceiling. Very high, angled, vaulted or heavily absorbent ceilings can reduce the height effect. Dolby’s soundbar setup guide recommends connecting the soundbar to the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port for an Atmos setup, subject to the capabilities of the specific TV, source and soundbar.

Measure before you buy
Record these measurements before choosing a model:
- TV body width: measure the complete chassis, not just the screen.
- Stand width and depth: the bar must sit securely without dangerous overhang.
- Distance between TV feet: wide-set feet can leave less usable space than the screen size suggests.
- Available height: check that the bar will not cover the bottom of the picture or the TV’s infrared sensor.
- Cabinet opening: an enclosed shelf can muffle sound and obstruct side- or up-firing drivers.
- Wall width: if mounting the TV and bar, check the available wall space and mounting hardware.
- Subwoofer location: allow space near a power outlet and avoid placing it where it blocks walkways.
There is no universal clearance measurement between a TV and soundbar. Follow the soundbar manufacturer’s mounting and placement instructions for the exact model.
Choose the configuration by listening goal

Check the exact TV model’s ports and audio-output capabilities before buying.

- HDMI ARC: sends TV audio to the soundbar over one HDMI cable and supports common surround formats and HDMI control features.
- HDMI eARC: offers higher bandwidth and is preferable for advanced lossless formats and some higher-quality Dolby Atmos signals when both devices support them.
- Optical: remains useful for older TVs and basic systems. It can support some compressed surround formats, but is more limited than HDMI ARC/eARC and does not provide the same two-way control features.
- Bluetooth: is convenient for music or temporary use, but may introduce latency and is generally not the preferred TV connection.
- Wi-Fi: may enable music streaming, multiroom audio and wireless ecosystem features on smart soundbars.
An eARC soundbar can often be used with an ARC television, but the TV may limit the available formats. Do not assume that an eARC-labelled system will deliver its highest-bandwidth audio when the TV lacks eARC. Sony’s connection instructions also identify HDMI eARC/ARC as the preferred connection, with optical as an alternative on compatible equipment.

Does the soundbar brand need to match the TV?
No. A Bose, Sonos, Sony, Samsung or other soundbar can generally connect to a different-brand TV through compatible HDMI ARC/eARC or optical connections.
Brand matching can unlock optional ecosystem features. For example, compatible Samsung TVs and soundbars may support Q-Symphony. Those features are benefits rather than basic requirements; a different-brand soundbar can still work through standard connections. Compatibility with the TV’s ports, audio formats and control standards remains essential. See Samsung’s buying guide for its ecosystem information.
Examples of sensible size matches
- 43-inch TV in a bedroom: a 32–36-inch compact bar is visually balanced, but a smaller model may be preferable if the TV is low-mounted or the room is very small.
- 55-inch TV in a living room: a 41–46-inch bar is a useful starting range. Add a subwoofer if films, music or gaming are priorities.
- 65-inch TV in a large room: a roughly 48–52-inch bar may look balanced, but a package with a subwoofer and rear speakers can improve room coverage more than simply choosing a longer cabinet.
- Large TV in a small room: a compact premium bar can be appropriate. Width should not force you into a system that overwhelms the space.
- 75-inch TV on a wall: a wider Atmos bar or complete surround system may be appropriate if it fits the wall and room. Exact visual symmetry is less important than clear dialogue, safe mounting and unobstructed drivers.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying by TV diagonal alone: measure the TV, furniture and TV feet.
- Assuming exact width matching is required: slightly narrower is normally fine, and room needs may justify a compact or wider model.
- Ignoring height and depth: a bar can block the screen, remote sensor or cabinet access even when its width is suitable.
- Placing an Atmos bar in a cramped shelf: up-firing and side-firing drivers need unobstructed space.
- Assuming more channels always means better sound: compare the actual speaker package, processing and room suitability.
- Buying an eARC-focused system for an optical-only TV: the bar may work, but the TV connection can limit advanced formats and control features.
- Choosing by wattage alone: manufacturers measure power differently, and wattage does not directly indicate dialogue clarity, bass extension, distortion or surround quality.
- Forgetting wireless components: subwoofers and rear speakers need power and practical placement near the main system.
A simple decision process
- Measure the TV body and the furniture.
- Start with a bar approximately as wide as the TV or slightly shorter.
- Override that visual guideline when the room, seating distance or placement space points toward a compact or larger system.
- Choose 2.0 or 3.0 for straightforward TV and dialogue, 2.1 or 3.1 for bass, and 5.1 or Atmos configurations for surround and height effects.
- Verify HDMI ARC/eARC, optical availability and the audio formats the TV can pass.
- Confirm clearance, TV-sensor visibility, driver placement and safe support before ordering.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Measure your actual TV and furniture, then choose a soundbar about the TV’s width or slightly narrower. Let the room, listening distance, bass requirements, surround goals and HDMI compatibility determine the final model and speaker configuration.
