Turkey Hill was Martha Stewart’s Connecticut farmhouse and family home from 1971 to 2007. Bought for $46,750, it grew into a four-acre property that Stewart renovated in two phases and shaped around the house, working outbuildings, and gardens. Her 24-part tour offers a look at how the property changed over those 36 years.
Martha Stewart’s tour of Turkey Hill, updated June 1, 2026, follows the farmhouse from its early appearance through its rooms, outbuildings, and gardens.
How Turkey Hill became a family home
Stewart bought the farmhouse in 1971 for $46,750 and lived there with her then-husband, Andy, and their daughter, Alexis. The original house needed substantial work; the family renovated it, then undertook a second renovation later. In 1975, they added a two-acre parcel, gradually assembling the four-acre property.

Stewart later described Turkey Hill as “a dream place for my family and me for many years.” The house and grounds were not just a backdrop: family life there included tending gardens and keeping chickens, and Stewart wrote several cookbooks at the property.

Outbuildings and the approach to the house
The tour opens with an early photograph of the farmhouse and moves through the property’s working structures and landscape features. These included a barn, garden shed, freestanding garage, stone walls, and a chicken coop that housed about 80 laying hens and roosters.
A boxwood allee led toward the house. Together, the outbuildings and planted approach show Turkey Hill as a farmstead organized around both domestic life and hands-on work outdoors.

Inside: a house shaped over time
Center hall and attic
The center hall is among the first interior spaces in the tour. Stewart described an unfinished mural in the style of Rufus Porter there. The tour also visits the attic, extending the view beyond the principal rooms.
Bedrooms and stairs
The house had four bedrooms; one was converted into a closet, leaving three bedrooms furnished with four-poster beds. The tour also follows the stairs, connecting the rooms across the house.

Kitchen and dining room
The kitchen changed in two stages: Stewart and Andy renovated it first, and professionals carried out a later renovation in the late 1990s. Stewart’s account of the earlier kitchen includes cupboards made from Massachusetts sycamore and a pot rack found at a tag sale.
The dining room combined a French chandelier with Hepplewhite chairs. It also became one of the most visible rooms associated with the property: photographs of it appeared in both the original and paperback editions of Stewart’s Entertaining.

Mudroom
The tour includes the mudroom as part of the route between the house and its working grounds, a practical transition in a home where gardening and keeping animals were part of daily life.

Gardens for food, flowers, and year-round interest
Turkey Hill’s grounds brought together several kinds of garden rather than a single ornamental landscape. The tour includes a vegetable garden, cutting garden, flower borders, perennial borders, and greenhouses. Stewart tried to grow the family’s vegetables through the long growing season.

The greenhouse project began with a 16-foot lean-to greenhouse. It was followed by two larger freestanding greenhouses, expanding the property’s protected growing space. The sequence—from a small lean-to to larger structures—shows how the garden developed alongside the house and family’s needs.

Several cookbooks were written at Turkey Hill, and Entertaining carried images of the dining room in both its original and paperback editions. For readers interested in the house’s connection to the book, the edition matters mainly as a question of the photographs: both formats showed the room, while a particular copy’s condition and publication year are separate considerations.
