Short answer: the Weber Slate is worth considering if you want a ready-to-cook propane griddle with genuinely useful design touches for smash burgers, breakfast and fajitas. Its case-hardened, pre-seasoned carbon-steel surface, independent heat zones, front grease chute and temperature display make it easier to use than many basic griddles. It is not maintenance-free, however: one reviewer found small rust spots after residue sat for 36 hours, and Weber’s stand-up models require substantial patio space. Choose the size and configuration before you buy.
What the Weber Slate is
Weber’s current US Slate family includes stand-up griddles in 28-, 30- and 36-inch widths, plus 17- and 22-inch tabletop versions. Exact storage, side-table and accessory arrangements vary by model. Tabletop versions suit balconies, tailgates or smaller patios; stand-up models provide a cart-height cooking station with more workspace.
The cited 30-inch propane model uses three liquid-propane burners with separate controls, allowing a hot zone for searing and cooler areas for holding food. Weber lists a separately sold 20-pound propane tank, so confirm the fuel configuration for the exact SKU you are considering.
Why it works particularly well for smash burgers
Fast, high heat
Weber says the carbon-steel cooktop is heat- and pressure-hardened, pre-seasoned with food-safe oils and capable of exceeding 500°F. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. In Billy Steele’s June 2024 Engadget review of a 30-inch unit, the surface reached about 565°F in roughly eight and a half minutes and 450°F in just over five minutes. Treat those as observations from that test, not guaranteed times for every Slate, fuel setup or weather condition.

Room to form a crust
A broad, flat surface lets you place several balls of beef, press them thin and leave room for buns or a warming area. Weber’s 30-inch page estimates capacity of up to 22 burger patties; its 36-inch page estimates up to 30. Weber does not define a universal patty size in the cited text, so actual capacity depends on patty diameter, spacing and what else is cooking.
Useful grease management
Steele found the front grease chute useful because it takes up little cooking area while letting rendered fat and drippings leave the main surface. That is a practical advantage when you are repeatedly scraping between burger batches.

Features that make the Slate easier to live with
Built-in surface-temperature display
The digital display uses an underside probe to show cooktop temperature, according to the review, and runs on two AA batteries. It gives you a reference for preheating and lower-temperature cooking without relying only on a handheld infrared thermometer. Probe-based readings and actual food-surface temperatures can differ, especially across burner zones.

Weber markets the Slate as pre-seasoned so you can cook without the lengthy initial seasoning routine associated with bare steel. Weber Grill Academy Brand Education Manager Jason Pruitt calls this “a game changer” on the 36-inch product page; that is a promotional statement from a Weber representative, not an independent assessment.

Storage and Weber Works compatibility
The reviewed stand-up design includes cart or stand storage layouts, wide side tables, optional extensions, a hinged lid and the Weber Works accessory system. Compatibility is model-specific and accessories are sold separately. Weber lists a smashed-burger press, basting dome, warming rack, tongs and storage/prep pieces; verify fit before ordering.
What cooking is like beyond burgers
Steele reported strong high-heat performance for smash burgers and fajitas and lower settings around 350–355°F for pancakes on the tested 30-inch unit. The Engadget review’s broader use-case framing also includes breakfast, cheesesteaks and fried rice. Those temperature observations should not be generalized to every Slate size or setup.

The rust question: resistant, not rust-proof
“Rust-resistant” should not be read as maintenance-free. Steele reported small rust spots after sauce and residue remained on the cooktop for 36 hours. He removed them with vinegar and coarse salt and recommends cleaning before residue sits overnight. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled durability study.
A separate Tom’s Guide roundup says its managing editor, Kate, used the Slate for two years without rust issues. She described the surface as generally even-heating, while noting hotter areas directly above burners, and liked the expandable storage table. The two accounts are not contradictory: cleaning habits, exposure, cover use and climate can all affect a steel cooktop.

Practical care routine
- Scrape food and grease toward the front chute after cooking.
- Remove sugary sauces, marinades and salty residue the same day rather than leaving them overnight.
- Dry the surface completely, then apply the light protective oil layer recommended in Weber’s care instructions.
- If light spotting appears, use a gentle abrasive approach such as vinegar and coarse salt, then clean, dry and re-oil.
- Use the cover, but inspect how it clears the side tables when removing it.
Drawbacks reported by reviewers
- Steele described the plastic casters as inexpensive-feeling.
- He found that the cover interior can catch on the side tables during removal.
- Burner-adjacent areas can run hotter than the rest of the surface, even when overall heating appears even.
- Stand-up models occupy more patio depth than a tabletop unit and need a safe propane-cylinder location.

The 30-inch model is the middle ground: three independently controlled burners, enough room for multi-zone burger cooking and a manufacturer estimate of up to 22 patties. The 36-inch model adds a larger surface and four burners, with Weber estimating up to 30 burgers, but demands more space. The 28-inch version is the smaller stand-up choice; Weber’s displayed US price was $549, reduced from $599, when checked on September 28, 2026. The 30-inch propane page displayed $649, reduced from $699, on that date. Web prices are volatile and may change.
Is the Weber Slate griddle worth it?
For a cook who wants smash-burger heat without a long initial seasoning process, the Slate’s strongest case is the combination of a ready-to-cook surface, independent burners, useful temperature feedback and a grease chute that preserves cooking space. The 30-inch model is the most balanced option for many households; move to 36 inches when you regularly cook for larger groups and have room for the footprint. Choose a tabletop Slate when portability or patio space matters more than storage and capacity.
Buy it with realistic expectations: the cooktop still needs prompt cleaning and oiling, accessories cost extra, and “rust-resistant” does not mean rust-proof. If you want the lowest possible price, the 28-inch model may be enough; if you need a compact or portable setup, compare the 17- and 22-inch tabletops rather than forcing a stand-up cart into a small space.
