Add Bluetooth streaming to a working vintage stereo without replacing its amplifier or speakers: connect a powered Bluetooth receiver to an unused line-level input, select that input, and pair your phone or computer. The key is choosing the correct connection. Use AUX, CD, or TAPE IN—not PHONO, REC OUT, or speaker terminals.
What you need
- A functioning stereo receiver or integrated amplifier with an unused line-level input.
- A Bluetooth receiver adapter, which takes audio from your phone and sends it to the stereo.
- A stereo RCA cable (often included), or a 3.5-mm-to-RCA cable if that matches the adapter’s output.
- The adapter’s specified power supply and a phone, tablet, or computer with Bluetooth stereo-audio support.
The signal path is: phone or computer → Bluetooth → adapter → RCA or 3.5-mm cable → stereo line input → amplifier and speakers. The adapter adds a wireless source; it does not replace the amplifier, tuner, phono stage, tone controls, or speaker connections.
Check the receiver before buying
Look at the receiver’s rear panel for a spare pair of red and white RCA sockets marked AUX, CD, TUNER, VIDEO, LINE IN, TAPE IN, or PLAY. Labels vary by era and manufacturer, so follow the receiver’s own markings or manual. An input marked PLAY is generally the input side of a tape loop.
- Do not use PHONO. It is designed for the very low-level signal from a turntable cartridge and applies phono equalization. A line-level Bluetooth signal there can sound distorted or tonally wrong. If PHONO is the only RCA input, a passive cable adapter will not solve the mismatch; you need suitable additional equipment or another amplifier.
- Do not use speaker terminals. They carry amplified power, not a line-level signal, and can damage the Bluetooth adapter.
- Do not mistake REC OUT or TAPE OUT for an input. Those sockets send audio out of the receiver. For Bluetooth playback into the stereo, use
TAPE IN,PLAY, or another input. - Use MAIN IN, POWER AMP IN, or PRE IN only if you understand the routing. These connections may bypass the receiver’s normal preamp or controls; a regular line input is the simpler choice.
Also check the receiver’s condition. Bluetooth will not fix scratchy controls, a dead channel, unreliable protection circuitry, or an unsafe power supply. If the unit shows signs of electrical damage or behaves erratically, have it assessed before use.

Choose the right kind of adapter
For the usual goal—playing phone audio through an old stereo—the straightforward choice is a powered Bluetooth receiver with stereo RCA output. “Receiver” describes the direction of the audio: it receives wireless audio from the phone and outputs it to the stereo.

For a basic installation, prioritize compatible analog output and easy power over codec branding. Stereo RCA output is usually the most convenient match; a 3.5-mm output also works with the right cable. An adapter with optical output is useful if you want to connect a separate DAC, but it is unnecessary for the simplest setup. Check whether the required cable and power supply are included.

Bluetooth codecs matter only when both the adapter and source device support a compatible codec. SBC is broadly supported; AAC may be useful with Apple devices; aptX variants and LDAC depend on support in the phone or computer. A codec name alone does not guarantee a particular audible improvement, and ordinary Bluetooth playback should not be described as lossless without evidence for the specific devices and implementation.

Install and pair it
- Turn the volume down and switch the stereo off. Disconnect AC power while routing cables if practical, especially with older equipment.
- Connect the audio cable. Plug the adapter’s right output into the receiver’s red input and its left output into the white input. If the adapter has a 3.5-mm output, use a 3.5-mm-to-RCA cable or the connection specified by its manual. Logitech’s setup guide illustrates RCA and 3.5-mm connections on its adapter.
- Power the adapter. Use its supplied power supply or one that matches the required voltage, current, polarity, and connector. Do not assume the stereo’s USB port can power a third-party adapter unless its manual says it can.
- Turn the stereo on and select the input you used. Choose, for example, AUX or CD. Connecting to the right sockets is not enough if the receiver is set to a different source.
- Put the adapter into pairing mode. Press its pairing button as directed by its manual. Many adapters flash an indicator while waiting and show a steady light when connected, but indicators and procedures vary by model. See Audioengine’s B1 pairing guidance for that product.
- Pair from the source device. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet, or computer, enable Bluetooth, and select the adapter’s name. Confirm a prompt if one appears, then start music. Menu names vary between operating systems and versions. Stereo music streaming generally uses the A2DP Bluetooth profile; see Sony’s A2DP explanation.
- Raise volume gradually. Start with the phone and stereo low, start playback, then increase the stereo volume in small steps. Adjust source volume if needed. Source-device levels can make playback unexpectedly loud on some setups; Yamaha’s guidance likewise cautions about Bluetooth playback volume.
You should now hear stereo playback through the receiver’s speakers. To return to the radio, turntable, CD player, or another wired source, select that source on the stereo. The Bluetooth adapter does not disable the receiver’s other inputs.
Troubleshooting

| Sound is distorted or much too loud | Verify that the cable is not plugged into PHONO. Lower the phone and stereo before testing again. If the adapter has adjustable output, check its manual; otherwise treat it as a line-level source and use the receiver’s volume control. |

| Audio drops out | Move the phone closer, keep the adapter in an open position rather than behind metal, and move it away from Wi-Fi routers, USB 3 hubs, and other 2.4-GHz equipment. Test another source device to narrow down the cause. Advertised range is typically a manufacturer’s ideal or typical-use figure, not a promise through walls; for example, Audioengine’s specifications state a typical range for its B1. |
| Video and sound are out of sync | Bluetooth can add latency. A receiver suitable for music may not be ideal for television or video, and delay varies by device, codec, and connection. Check both ends for compatible low-latency support or use a wired or purpose-built TV audio connection. Do not assume one model’s latency applies to every adapter. |
| Adapter is missing from Bluetooth settings | Unplug and reconnect adapter power, follow the manual’s pairing-button procedure, move the source closer, and switch off nearby paired devices. When Bluetooth is not the best upgrade
A Bluetooth receiver is a simple fit when you want casual phone-to-stereo playback, but it is not the only path. A Wi-Fi streamer may suit a home with multi-room playback or network-based services. A transceiver makes sense if you also want to send receiver audio to headphones; the FiiO BTA30 Pro is one example of a device with both receive and transmit functions. If you want to send audio from the stereo to wireless headphones, use a transmitter connected to an appropriate audio output instead. Sony’s transmitter setup describes that opposite signal direction.

If the receiver has no usable line-level input, Bluetooth alone cannot make a direct, safe connection. If the receiver is faulty, unreliable, or needs features such as HDMI or modern network playback, repair or replacement may be more appropriate than adding an adapter. A Bluetooth upgrade adds a source; it does not modernize every part of an aging system.
