Usually, yes: a TV that looks off is still connected to mains power. Pressing the remote normally activates a low-power standby state rather than disconnecting the set. The TV may keep its remote receiver, network connection, HDMI-CEC controls, timers, software services, voice features, or quick-start circuitry ready.
For an efficient modern television, that standby cost is often modest—commonly around a dollar or two per year at typical electricity rates. But quick-start modes, network wake features, USB accessories, and the rest of an entertainment system can raise the draw substantially. Measuring your own setup is the reliable way to decide what to change.
What “off” means on a modern TV
A television generally enters standby when you press its power button. It is no longer displaying a picture, but some electronics remain energized so the set can respond quickly or perform background tasks. Depending on the model and settings, these may include:
- infrared or Bluetooth remote reception;
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet circuitry;
- memory and system-on-chip components needed for wake-up;
- HDMI-CEC control (Samsung Anynet+ or LG Simplink);
- voice-assistant or microphone hardware;
- timers, scheduled recordings and clock functions;
- software-update and content-maintenance services;
- casting, mobile-app and smart-speaker wake functions;
- USB power while the TV is off; and
- model-specific OLED panel-care operations.
Not every TV keeps every feature active. Firmware, region, network status and menu choices matter.

Standby-passive, network standby and quick start
Standby-passive means the television mainly waits for a local command such as the remote control. Standby-active or network standby allows an external signal—such as a phone app, casting request, smart speaker or Wake-on-LAN packet—to wake it. Quick Start, Instant On and similar names describe a higher-readiness state intended to shorten boot time.
ENERGY STAR’s cited television criteria specify a maximum of 0.5 watts for standby-passive mode and 1 watt for standby-active mode on qualifying network-capable sets. These are test limits for defined conditions, not a guarantee that every feature-enabled state will read exactly that amount. See the ENERGY STAR criteria and Version 9.1 specification.
How much does standby cost?
Use your electricity rate, rather than a generic “average TV” number:

These figures assume uninterrupted operation and a $0.16/kWh rate. Replace that rate with the one on your utility bill. The TV itself may not be the largest standby load: a soundbar, receiver, cable box, game console, streaming box or powered antenna can consume more.

Why the hidden draw varies
Quick-start and instant-on modes
Quick-start features leave more of the operating system ready so the picture appears sooner. LG says Quick Start+ can increase energy consumption and, in the cited guidance, is enabled by default on certain webOS 6-and-newer models. This is an LG-specific example, not a universal rule. Network and mobile wake
Sony’s Remote start lets a same-network mobile device power on supported TVs. Samsung documents Power On with Mobile. Casting, proprietary apps, smart speakers and Wake-on-LAN can create similar behavior. ENERGY STAR’s product-data schema lists these as possible smart-wake capabilities, but a particular TV may support only some of them.
HDMI-CEC
HDMI-CEC lets a console, receiver or streaming device send power and input commands. Disabling it may stop unwanted wake-ups, but it also removes one-remote control between compatible equipment.
Updates, timers and maintenance
A set can briefly draw more power after shutdown while downloading software, indexing content or completing an OLED panel-care cycle. Distinguish that temporary activity from the settled baseline. Do not assume every OLED model has the same maintenance schedule; follow its manual.

USB and connected equipment
“USB power in standby” or an always-on USB port can add to the reading. If your meter is connected to a power strip, you are measuring the strip and every attached device, not just the TV.
How to measure your TV’s real standby draw
The most useful consumer method is a plug-in energy meter that shows tenths or hundredths of a watt and accumulates kilowatt-hours.
- Plug the meter directly into the wall.
- Plug only the TV into the meter. Temporarily remove soundbars, consoles, streaming boxes and USB accessories.
- Turn the TV off and note the immediate reading.
- Wait 15–30 minutes, then record the settled reading.
- Repeat with Quick Start, network wake or similar features enabled and disabled.
- If the number fluctuates, leave the meter connected for 24 hours and use accumulated energy.
For a time average, calculate:
Average watts = measured kWh × 1,000 ÷ hoursThe U.S. Department of Energy’s standby-power guidance notes that changing loads should be averaged over time and recommends instruments resolving 0.01 W or better below 10 W. Many inexpensive meters are less accurate at very low loads, so treat a single rounded reading cautiously. A brief spike may be an update or maintenance cycle rather than normal standby.

LG example
On the LG support path documented for applicable webOS versions:
Settings → All Settings → General → Devices → TV Management → Quick Start+ → OffTurning it off may lengthen startup. LG’s documentation also warns that the feature can increase energy use.
Sony example
HOME → Settings → BRAVIA Settings → Remote startDisable Remote start if you do not need a same-network phone or tablet to wake the TV. See Sony’s guide.

Samsung example
Settings → General → Network → Expert Settings → Power On with MobileSettings → General → External Device Manager → Anynet+These Samsung labels and paths can vary. Turning them off may prevent mobile wake or automatic HDMI device coordination. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance is at Samsung Support.

Also look for Network Standby, Wake on Cast, Wake-on-LAN, hands-free voice control, remote-app wake, automatic updates, scheduled recordings, ambient mode and USB power while off.

Standby draw is not inherently dangerous. Electrical hazards come from damaged cords, overloaded strips, failing surge protectors or abnormal equipment behavior.
Switched strips and smart plugs
A mechanical switched power strip is simple and offline, and can disconnect a whole entertainment group. It is a poor fit when the outlet is inaccessible, recordings are scheduled, network wake is required or OLED maintenance is a concern.
A smart plug can schedule physical disconnection and may provide energy history, but the plug consumes some power and the TV is unreachable while disconnected. Power cuts can interrupt updates or maintenance, and complex systems may need coordinated shutdown. Use a listed plug with an appropriate household rating and a manual override. For one-TV diagnosis, buy a low-watt plug-in meter first; a smart plug is more useful when you also want automation. A whole-home monitor such as the Emporia Vue 3 is disproportionate to a sub-$2 annual standby issue unless you are investigating broader circuit use.
A sensible troubleshooting sequence
- Measure the TV alone after it has settled.
- Check whether the reading falls when Quick Start or network-wake features are disabled.
- Reconnect accessories one at a time and measure each separately.
- Consult the model manual for USB power, OLED maintenance, updates and recording requirements.
- If standby remains unexpectedly high or the TV turns on and off by itself, contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician.
The practical answer is rarely “unplug every TV.” Measure first, disable features you do not use, and cut power only when the resulting loss of convenience and maintenance access is acceptable.
