AWG means American Wire Gauge. It identifies a conductor’s size, and its numbering runs opposite to what many people expect: a smaller AWG number means a larger conductor. For example, 12 AWG is larger than 14 AWG.

AWG tells you neither the finished cable’s outside diameter nor, by itself, how much current it can safely carry. Choosing wire for a building or other electrical project also requires checking conductor material, insulation, installation conditions, terminals, overcurrent protection and voltage drop.

AWG size chart: diameter, area and approximate metric comparison

The figures below describe nominal conductor dimensions, not the insulated wire’s outside diameter. Metric comparisons are approximate area equivalents—not guaranteed interchangeable products or approved substitutions.

2/0 0.365 in / 9.27 mm 67.4 mm² — Power distribution
4/0 0.460 in / 11.68 mm 107 mm² — Very high-current applications

These are size-conversion references, not current-capacity recommendations. The familiar progression runs from larger conductors toward smaller ones as the number rises: 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 AWG. Below 1 AWG, sizes are written 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 and 4/0; larger sizes are commonly stated in circular mils or kcmil. AWG is also called Brown & Sharpe gauge in historical contexts. It is used chiefly in the United States and some North American applications; metric conductor sizes are normally given in square millimeters. Cerrowire’s electrical FAQ discusses AWG and circular-mil designations.

How the AWG scale works

AWG is a geometric, logarithmic scale, not a linear count of thickness. A change of three gauge numbers approximately doubles or halves cross-sectional area; a change of six approximately doubles or halves diameter. One commonly used nominal diameter formula is:

din = 0.005 × 92(36 − AWG)/39

Here, d is nominal conductor diameter in inches. For a round conductor, area is A = πd²/4. If diameter is expressed in thousandths of an inch (mils), its circular-mil area is the diameter in mils squared.

These formulas describe nominal conductor geometry. Insulation makes the finished wire larger; stranding, compact construction and manufacturing tolerances also affect actual product dimensions. For purchasing, connector fit or installation, check the product specification rather than estimating from the AWG label alone. Manufacturer data can list strand count, conductor dimensions, resistance and bend radius separately, as in Southwire’s building-wire specifications.

AWG, resistance and voltage drop

A larger conductor has more cross-sectional area and generally less resistance per unit length for the same material and comparable construction. Lower resistance means less resistive heating at a given current: P = I²R. Doubling area approximately halves resistance when material, length and temperature are otherwise comparable. The same reduction generally lowers voltage drop.

For a simple DC circuit, Ohm’s law is V = IR. In a two-conductor circuit, current travels out to the load and back, so use round-trip length:

Voltage drop = current × resistance per unit length × 2 × one-way length

For illustration, a 12 V load drawing 10 A sits 25 ft from its source. The conductors carry current over 50 ft total. If copper conductors are 12 AWG and their resistance is approximated using Southwire’s published figure of 1.662 Ω per 1,000 ft at 25°C, the pair’s resistance is about 0.0831 Ω. The estimated drop is about 0.83 V, or roughly 6.9% of 12 V. This is an illustrative calculation using a representative resistance figure; the installed product’s actual resistance and operating temperature can differ. A larger conductor, shorter route, higher system voltage or lower current may reduce the loss.

Long low-voltage circuits are especially sensitive: a 3 V loss is a large fraction of a 12 V supply but a much smaller fraction of a 240 V supply. A conductor can meet a thermal ampacity requirement yet still have too much voltage drop for the load. For AC systems, impedance may include resistance, inductive reactance, power factor and conductor arrangement; a resistance-only calculation may not be sufficient. Southwire product data distinguishes DC resistance, AC resistance and inductive reactance. Cerrowire’s calculators and tables can be a useful reference, provided their assumptions fit the project.

Ampacity: why a generic amps-per-gauge chart is not enough

Ampacity is the current a conductor may carry under specified conditions. It is not the same as a breaker rating, equipment rating, acceptable voltage drop or short-circuit withstand. Never choose a circuit breaker solely from a general AWG-to-amps chart.

For context, the copper values below are examples from 2023 NEC Table 310.16 under its stated assumptions: not more than three current-carrying conductors in raceway, cable or earth, and 30°C ambient temperature. They are not universal installation permissions.

The usable value can be limited by insulation rating, equipment-terminal temperature ratings, ambient-temperature correction, adjustment for more than three current-carrying conductors, installation method and rules for small conductors. A 90°C insulation rating does not automatically permit using the 90°C table value at the equipment: terminal limits and other applicable constraints can control the final allowable ampacity. Higher-temperature columns may be used in correction or adjustment calculations while the final result remains subject to terminal limits.

In U.S. NEC contexts, small-conductor overcurrent limitations include 15 A for 14 AWG copper, 20 A for 12 AWG copper and 30 A for 10 AWG copper, subject to the applicable code provisions and exceptions. These are not universal rules for every jurisdiction or application. The cited manufacturer data references 2023 NEC Table 310.16 and notes limitations in NEC 240.4(D); NFPA material associated with the 2025 NEC revision process provides related table context. Local jurisdictions can adopt different editions or amendments, so verify the code enforced by the authority having jurisdiction.

Why AWG alone does not specify a wire

AWG describes conductor size—not the whole cable. A label or product sheet may also specify conductor material, insulation, voltage and temperature ratings, wet-location suitability, strand count and certification. THHN, THWN-2, XHHW-2, NM-B, UF-B, MTW, TFFN/TFN, USE-2, SEU and SER identify different product types and permitted uses; they are not interchangeable simply because the conductor gauge matches. See the manufacturer’s product information for TFN/TFFN, SEU and USE-2.

Other practical differences matter too. Two products with the same AWG can have different outside diameters, bend radii and terminal requirements. Insulation thickness means outside diameter is a poor way to identify gauge; use a marking or product data. More conductors in a raceway can require ampacity adjustment, and hot surroundings can require correction. Bundling or enclosure can increase heat. A fuse or breaker protects a circuit only when coordinated with suitable conductors and equipment; it does not make undersized wire safe. Grounding and bonding conductors follow separate sizing rules.

Copper, aluminum, solid and stranded conductors

Copper and aluminum: Copper generally has lower resistance than aluminum for the same nominal conductor size. Aluminum can be used safely in appropriate systems, but it may require a larger conductor for comparable electrical duty and must be connected to terminals listed for the conductor material and size. Follow equipment and conductor instructions for preparation and torque. Copper-clad aluminum is a distinct category, not simply copper wire.

Solid and stranded: Solid wire has one conductor; stranded wire bundles smaller wires and is generally more flexible. Neither is best for every job. Strand count affects flexibility, bend radius and termination needs, and fine-stranded cable may require terminals specifically rated for it. Equal AWG markings do not guarantee equal overall conductor diameter or interchangeability at a terminal.

AWG and metric sizes

Metric wire designations normally state nominal cross-sectional area in square millimeters, such as 1.5 mm², 2.5 mm², 4 mm² and 6 mm². The comparison column in the chart is approximate: 12 AWG has about 3.31 mm² nominal area, for example, while a commonly encountered metric size may be 4 mm². Products do not necessarily match exactly in area, construction, insulation, certification or intended use. Do not substitute one for the other in regulated work without checking the governing standard, product listing and terminal compatibility.

Choosing wire for different applications

  • Residential circuits: 14, 12 and 10 AWG are familiar sizes, but the appropriate conductor depends on the circuit design, breaker, load, wiring method, insulation, terminals and locally adopted code. Do not infer breaker size from gauge alone.
  • Automotive and marine: Account for long runs and low system voltage, as well as vibration, moisture, heat or oil exposure. Check voltage drop, fuse placement, insulation suitability and terminal compatibility. Residential NEC ampacity charts are not automatically the right sizing method.
  • Solar and battery systems: Consider continuous current, short-circuit current, DC voltage drop, overcurrent protection placement, connector compatibility, temperature and routing. Use cable suited to the environment and system requirements.
  • Speaker wire: Length, speaker impedance, power and acceptable signal loss are more relevant than a household branch-circuit ampacity chart. Also consider routing and connector fit.
  • Electronics and signal wiring: AWG may matter less than impedance, shielding, capacitance, signal integrity, current pulses, flexibility and connector pin size.

Motor, HVAC, welder, inverter, battery and nonlinear-load circuits can call for application-specific rules or calculations. A general-purpose chart cannot account for every load or installation.

How to choose a wire size safely

  1. Gather the circuit details: voltage, expected current, continuous or intermittent duty, AC or DC, and one-way length.
  2. Identify material and product: copper, aluminum or copper-clad aluminum; insulation type; voltage and temperature ratings; wet, outdoor, buried, hot, oily or corrosive conditions.
  3. Determine installation conditions: wiring method, number of current-carrying conductors, bundling, ambient temperature, conduit space and physical routing.
  4. Check ampacity under the applicable rules: account for conductor rating, corrections, adjustments, terminal ratings, overcurrent protection and local code. Do not treat a 90°C table value as automatic permission.
  5. Check voltage drop separately: use the full circuit length and expected current. Long low-voltage runs may need a larger conductor even if the smaller one meets thermal sizing.
  6. Confirm physical fit and terminations: verify conduit fill, bend radius, pulling constraints, connector and terminal range, strand type and equipment listing.
  7. Coordinate protection and grounding: select breakers or fuses and grounding/bonding conductors under the applicable rules, not from an AWG-only chart.
  8. Verify the adopted standard: confirm the locally enforced code edition and amendments. For construction wiring, consult a qualified electrician or electrical designer when the calculation or installation is uncertain.

A larger conductor may reduce resistance and voltage drop, but it costs more, weighs more, can be harder to pull and may need more conduit space, larger terminals and a greater bend radius. The design must work as a complete system.

Common AWG mistakes

  • “Higher gauge means thicker wire.” In AWG, higher numbers mean thinner conductors.
  • “12 AWG always carries 20 amps.” Ampacity and permitted protection depend on material, code, insulation, installation and terminal conditions.
  • “The wire’s 90°C rating is the final answer.” Terminal ratings and adjustment or correction rules can limit the usable ampacity.
  • “The breaker determines the wire size.” Protection and conductor must be coordinated; a breaker does not make an unsuitable conductor safe.
  • “No breaker trip means voltage drop is fine.” A circuit can operate without tripping while voltage loss impairs performance or causes other problems.
  • “Outside diameter tells me AWG.” Insulation and construction vary. Read markings or use manufacturer data.
  • “Copper and aluminum of the same AWG are interchangeable.” Material, sizing, terminals and installation requirements differ.
  • “All 12-gauge wire is the same.” Building wire, speaker cable, appliance wire and marine cable can have different construction, insulation and permitted uses.

For U.S. construction wiring, NEC examples in this guide are explicitly tied to 2023 Table 310.16 where stated; they are not a statement of the code adopted in every place. Confirm local requirements and product instructions before installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 12 AWG bigger than 14 AWG?

Yes. In the AWG system, a smaller gauge number means a larger conductor, so 12 AWG is larger than 14 AWG.

What is the metric equivalent of 12 AWG?

12 AWG has a nominal cross-sectional area of about 3.31 mm². A nearby metric product size is not automatically interchangeable; check the applicable standard, product and terminals.

Does thicker wire reduce voltage drop?

Generally, yes. A larger conductor has lower resistance for the same material and length, so it usually reduces voltage drop. Check the actual circuit length, current and product resistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does wire length affect gauge choice?

Yes. Longer runs have greater total resistance and can produce more voltage drop. Include the return conductor in a two-wire circuit calculation.

Is stranded wire better than solid wire?

Neither is universally better. Stranded wire is generally more flexible; solid wire may suit some fixed installations. Terminals and product listings must match the conductor construction.

Can I use automotive wire in household wiring?

Not by default. Automotive wire may have different insulation, voltage ratings, certifications and permitted uses from building wire. Use a product listed and suitable for the installation.

Can I use the 90°C ampacity value for a 90°C wire?

Not automatically. The insulation rating is only one factor; terminal temperature ratings, correction and adjustment factors, and applicable code rules can limit final allowable ampacity.
