The right string lights depend on more than bulb appearance. Choose by physical design, bulb technology, power source, location rating, brightness, controls, and installation method. Fairy lights suit bedrooms and centerpieces; globe and S14 café lights work well on patios and pergolas; curtain, icicle, and net lights cover larger decorative areas; rope lights outline edges. For outdoor installations, verify the complete product—including its plug, transformer, controller, battery box, connectors, and extension cord—is approved for the location.
What counts as a string light?
A string light is a connected series of decorative light sources mounted along a flexible cord, wire, tube, or mesh. The category includes tiny LEDs on copper wire, replaceable screw-in bulbs, permanently integrated LEDs, enclosed rope lights, and seasonal arrangements such as icicle, curtain, and net lights.
Names overlap. “Patio,” “café,” “bistro,” “festoon,” and “Edison” lights may describe similar socketed products. “Fairy lights” generally means smaller decorative bulbs or LEDs, but the product specifications—not the name—determine whether a set is suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

Fairy and micro lights
Fairy lights use very small LEDs on thin, flexible wire. They are popular in bedrooms, around headboards, on bookshelves and mantels, inside wreaths, in mason jars, and in wedding centerpieces. They commonly use batteries, USB power, or a low-voltage adapter and are available in warm white, cool white, multicolor, and color-changing versions.

These lights create sparkle rather than useful area illumination. Their fine wire can kink or break, and the battery pack or USB adapter may have a different weather rating from the light wire. Feit Electric specifically warns that water-resistant micro-wire does not automatically make the complete product suitable for rain; follow the package’s complete indoor/outdoor designation (Feit fairy-light guidance).
Globe lights: G40 and G50
Globe lights use round bulbs. G40 generally identifies a smaller globe and G50 a larger one, although exact dimensions and naming can vary by manufacturer. They provide a soft, evenly distributed decorative glow in patios, porches, pergolas, dining areas, bedrooms, and event spaces.
Clear globes produce sharper points of light; frosted globes diffuse the light more gently. Larger globes make a stronger visual statement but may need more robust mounting and shatter-resistant construction. G40 and G50 describe bulb shape or size—not the socket, voltage, wattage, or electrical compatibility. Check those specifications separately.
S14, Edison, café, bistro, and festoon lights
These are the familiar larger-bulb strings used across patios, decks, restaurants, pergolas, outdoor dining areas, and wedding venues. Many use elongated S14 bulbs and E26 screw bases, but neither detail should be assumed without checking the product.
Before buying, confirm the base type, bulb wattage, maximum socket wattage, spacing, number of sockets, illuminated length, replaceable-bulb design, and whether the string is parallel-connected or series-connected. Also check how many strands may be connected end to end and the maximum total load. Socketed strings are attractive and repairable, but their bulbs and sockets add weight and exposed connection points.
Feit’s replacement-bulb guidance covers S14 and G40 formats and explains that an LED bulb can be used in an older incandescent socket when the base matches. Compatibility still depends on voltage, wattage, dimming support, physical clearance, and the manufacturer’s instructions (Feit replacement-bulb guidance).

Icicle lights
Icicle lights have a horizontal main cable with hanging drops of varying lengths. They are designed for rooflines, eaves, gutters, windows, fences, and railings, especially in holiday displays. The look is seasonal and visually busy, so it can overwhelm a small façade.

Curtain lights
Curtain lights use a horizontal top lead with multiple vertical strands. They quickly cover walls, windows, photo backdrops, dorm rooms, and wedding or event spaces.
Their main disadvantages are tangling, storage difficulty, and visible cable management. They are normally decorative rather than bright enough to replace room lighting.
Net lights
Net lights arrange interconnected LEDs in a grid or mesh. They are especially useful for shrubs, hedges, bushes, and small trees because they provide even coverage faster than individually wrapping a strand.
Netting is less adaptable to irregular shapes. Do not stretch it tightly over living plants, and use it outdoors only when the complete product is marked for that environment.

Rope lights
Rope lights enclose LEDs inside a continuous flexible plastic tube. They work well for stair edges, railings, under-cabinet accents, bed frames, cabinet tops, architectural outlines, and commercial displays.
They create a continuous line rather than a traditional row of visible bulbs. Bends, end caps, and connectors are common weak points. Cut rope only at the marked cut points on products specifically designed for cutting, and install end caps and connectors exactly as instructed. A weather rating may depend on those components being correctly fitted.
Solar string lights
Solar lights use a panel to charge a rechargeable battery. They are useful for gardens, fences, sheds, pathways, and remote décor where running a cable is inconvenient.
Nightly runtime depends on unobstructed daylight, panel orientation, weather, temperature, battery condition, and the selected light mode. A panel beneath trees, under eaves, or on a shaded wall may not provide enough charge. Check whether replacement batteries are available and evaluate the panel, battery enclosure, and connectors—not just the light strand.
Battery-powered and USB-powered lights
Battery lights are portable and convenient for centerpieces, rentals, temporary displays, dorm rooms, campers, and small indoor projects. Their limitations include finite runtime, replacement batteries, and possible dimming as batteries discharge. The battery compartment and controller determine much of the product’s environmental suitability.
USB lights are useful near desks, shelves, headboards, and power banks. USB power does not mean outdoor-safe. The adapter, power bank, charging arrangement, and connectors must all be approved for the intended conditions.

Smart and color-changing lights
Smart strings may offer app control, remote operation, schedules, dimming, voice-assistant integration, scenes, music synchronization, RGB colors, RGBIC effects, or separately controlled zones. They suit buyers who want changing moods or automated operation. Govee’s current collection, for example, includes smart outdoor, solar, icicle, curtain, net-style, and bulb-based products (Govee string-light collection).

Check what functions remain available if the network or service is unavailable. Smart lights are a poor fit when offline simplicity, repairability, or conventional replaceable bulbs matters most.
LED versus incandescent string lights

LED is usually the sensible default for a new purchase, particularly for long runtimes or large displays. ENERGY STAR says certified decorative light strings use approximately 92% less energy than conventional incandescent strings and may last up to 10 times longer. Those figures apply to the relevant certified product category, not automatically to every LED product; actual service life varies with moisture, heat, handling, power quality, and construction (ENERGY STAR decorative light strings).
Incandescent strings are not automatically unsafe, but they consume more electricity and operate hotter. Keep them away from combustible materials, respect socket wattage limits, and inspect glass, filaments, insulation, and sockets carefully.
Filament-style LEDs imitate incandescent filaments while retaining LED operation. Check their actual wattage, lumen output, color temperature, dimming capability, bulb material, and outdoor rating rather than assuming that the vintage appearance tells you how they perform.

- Patio or deck: Choose outdoor-rated globe or S14 LED strings, with appropriate spacing, brightness, mounting hardware, and a separate support cable if the run is tensioned overhead.
- Pergola or outdoor dining area: Socketed café lights provide ambient light and a visible design feature. Verify wet-location suitability and connection limits.
- Bedroom, shelf, or mantel: Fairy or micro LEDs provide decorative sparkle without the bulk of large bulbs.
- Wedding or event backdrop: Curtain lights cover a wall quickly; fairy lights suit centerpieces and delicate décor. Plan for tangling and temporary cable management.
- Shrubs and hedges: Net lights provide faster, more even coverage than individually wrapping strands.
- Roofline holiday display: Icicle lights create hanging drops, but require careful clips, storage, and outdoor-rated connections.
- No nearby outlet: Solar is suitable for sunny locations; battery power is better for portable or short-duration displays.
- Architectural edge or stair accent: Rope lights create a continuous outline. They should not replace required stair or safety lighting.
- Year-round outdoor use: Choose a product specifically marked and evaluated for all-year installation, not merely one labeled for seasonal outdoor use.
- Rental-friendly installation: Use manufacturer-approved removable clips or hooks and avoid puncturing walls, siding, or cords.

- Shape and size: G40 and G50 generally identify globe dimensions; S14 identifies an elongated bulb format. C7, C9, teardrop, Edison, and filament describe other shapes or styles.
- Base: E26 and E12 identify screw-base sizes in compatible systems. A matching shape with the wrong base will not fit.
- Spacing: The distance between bulbs affects the visual density and overall coverage.
- Bulb count: More bulbs do not necessarily mean more brightness.
- Cord and illuminated length: Total length may include unlit lead-in and tail sections.
- Brightness: Compare lumens or stated output, whether measured per bulb, segment, or complete string.
- Color temperature: Warm, neutral, and cool whites are usually expressed in kelvins. Color rendering can matter when the lights illuminate food, décor, or faces for photographs.
- Electrical rating: Confirm voltage, wattage, socket maximum, controller rating, and permitted connected load.
Indoor versus outdoor use
Indoor-only lights are not designed for rain, condensation, ultraviolet exposure, or wet connectors. Outdoor-rated lights may still be limited to covered locations, while exposed locations may require a product approved for wet conditions. A covered porch can experience windblown rain, humidity, condensation, and temperature swings, so “covered” is not a universal exemption.
Do not treat “weather-resistant,” “water-resistant,” “waterproof,” “outdoor,” “wet-rated,” and an IP code as interchangeable. An IP rating describes defined ingress testing; by itself it does not validate UV durability, frost resistance, mounting, electrical connections, or every component in an assembled system. The manufacturer’s complete location designation controls.
Seasonal outdoor use is not the same as permanent, year-round installation. UL Solutions describes additional requirements for all-year string lights, including larger wire, thicker insulation, more flexing, and more rigorous strain-relief testing (UL Solutions year-round string-light guidance).

Outdoor safety checklist
Before installing, look for:
- A recognized testing or certification mark, such as UL or ETL, where appropriate.
- Clear indoor/outdoor and location labeling.
- Correct voltage and maximum socket wattage.
- Overcurrent protection or fusing where applicable.
- Good strain relief at plugs and sockets.
- Intact insulation and undamaged sockets, plugs, and connectors.
- Outdoor-rated extension cords and suitable connection points.
- A GFCI-protected outdoor receptacle where applicable to the installation.
- Instructions stating the permitted strand count and total connected wattage.
UL Solutions says its mark indicates that representative samples were evaluated for hazards including fire and electric shock. It distinguishes indoor-only and indoor/outdoor decorative strings through different label treatments; inspect the actual mark and listing information rather than trusting a vague “certified” claim (UL decorative-lighting safety bulletin).
For certain covered seasonal and decorative lighting products, the CPSC identifies three observable safety characteristics: minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief, and overcurrent protection. Its guidance describes portable, plug-connected, temporary-use products with nominal 120-volt input and does not mean every string light must carry one particular certification under the CPSC page’s rule (CPSC seasonal-lighting FAQ).
Do not
- Use nails, staples, or fasteners that pierce or crush the cord.
- Exceed the permitted strand count, socket wattage, or total load.
- Use an indoor extension cord outdoors.
- Leave frayed, cracked, melted, flickering, hot-running, or exposed-conductor products in service.
- Route cords where doors, windows, wheels, or foot traffic can pinch them.
- Wrap lights tightly around hot surfaces.
- Cover lights with fabric or another combustible material unless expressly permitted.
- Mix incompatible connectors, controllers, bulbs, or power supplies.
Unplug a string that smells hot, trips a breaker, flickers abnormally, shows melted plastic, or has exposed conductors. Replace it or have it professionally evaluated; tape is not a proper repair for damaged electrical insulation.
How to install string lights without damaging them
- Measure the route. Include the unlit lead-in, tail, outlet position, corners, and slack. Do not stretch the light string to its absolute length.
- Confirm the entire system rating. Check the strand, plug, transformer, controller, battery box, solar panel connection, connectors, and extension cord.
- Plan the support. For overhead patio runs, a separate guide wire or support system may need to carry mechanical tension. The electrical cord is not automatically a structural cable.
- Use suitable clips or hooks. Follow the manufacturer’s mounting method and local electrical requirements. Avoid nails, staples, sharp edges, and crushing pressure.
- Keep connections protected. Do not place plugs or connectors in standing water. Use only the connection arrangement allowed by the instructions.
- Install bulbs in the recommended sequence. Some manufacturers recommend mounting the cord before installing bulbs to reduce impact and twisting.
- Check the load. Confirm maximum total wattage and end-to-end connection limits before adding another strand.
- Test before final cable management. Check steady operation, timers, dimming, colors, and smart controls before securing every section.
Manufacturer instructions take priority over generic installation advice. A product that can be connected, cut, extended, or mounted one way may be unsafe when treated like another product family.

Final buying checklist
- Where will the lights be used: indoors, covered outdoors, exposed outdoors, or in a wet location?
- Is the display seasonal or year-round?
- Do you need accent, ambient, task, or safety lighting?
- Which appearance and bulb size fit the space?
- Are the bulbs replaceable, and do the base, voltage, wattage, and socket match?
- Do you want warm, neutral, cool, or colored light?
- Is an outlet available, or are solar, battery, or USB power more practical?
- What are the cord length, illuminated length, spacing, and brightness specifications?
- What are the maximum connected strands and total wattage?
- Are all components—including the plug, controller, transformer, battery box, and connectors—approved for the location?
- Is there a genuine recognized certification mark?
- How will the string be supported without puncturing or loading the electrical cord?
- What replacement bulbs, fuses, controllers, or batteries can be obtained later?
