Yes, waste plastic can become 3D-printer filament, but not by simply melting a bottle or a failed print. A dependable result requires separated feedstock, cleaning, shredding, thorough drying, controlled extrusion, cooling, diameter measurement and winding. PET bottles are technically repurposable; whether the filament will print reliably depends on polymer grade, contamination, moisture and process control.
That is the practical answer behind questions such as “Does this PET bottle-to-3D-printer filament project actually work?” and “There’s a chance I can get a bunch of these PET bottles in the near future, are they repurposable as filament?”
What the recycling process really involves
Filament recycling is a chain of operations rather than a single melting step. Each stage affects the next one:
- Identify and sort: keep known polymer types and grades separate. Do not combine PET, PETG, PLA, ABS, HDPE or unknown plastics. Even different PET grades can need different settings, and equipment vendors warn that mixed polymers should not be processed together.
- Clean: remove bottle caps, seals, labels, adhesive and residue. A 3devo PET walkthrough describes hot-water cleaning before shredding. Choose cleaning methods appropriate to the material and local waste-handling rules; industrial solvent practices are not general household recommendations.
- Shred: reduce bottles or failed prints to flakes or granules that the extruder can feed consistently. Clean the machinery when changing materials to prevent cross-contamination.
- Dry: follow the material and machine maker’s requirements. PET and PETG absorb atmospheric moisture. Water in the melt can cause hydrolysis, reducing molecular weight and degrading filament quality.
- Extrude, cool and pull: melt the prepared feedstock, form a strand, cool it at a controlled rate, and pull it through the line.
- Measure and wind: continuously check diameter, adjust the process where possible, and wind the finished filament onto a spool.
- Test: print a controlled test object and assess feeding, surface quality and consistency before treating the material as production filament.
Why PET bottles are difficult
3devo states: “PET and PETG (and most other highly polar polymers) cannot stay inside the machine because both polymers are hygroscopic by nature, which means that they will absorb moisture (water) out of the atmosphere which will decrease filament quality in subsequent extrusion due to hydrolysis.” In practice, wet PET can produce bubbles, unstable flow and weaker, less consistent filament.

Do not copy a single drying recipe universally. One 3devo material table lists four hours at 140°C, while the same walkthrough describes an experimental four-hour step at 160°C. Those are source-specific observations, not a universal setting. Use the resin supplier’s data and the dryer and extruder manufacturer’s instructions.
PET also has relatively low melt strength. The strand can be difficult to pull at a stable diameter, and slow cooling may encourage crystallization. Cooling, pulling speed and die conditions therefore matter as much as the nominal melt temperature.
How much material can a bottle provide?
A University of Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing project report (2016) estimates that a half-litre single-serve PET bottle weighs about 10 g. Assuming no material loss, that quantity corresponds to about 1.2 m of 1.75 mm filament or 3.0 m of 2.8 mm filament. Real workflows lose material during sorting, shredding, purging and startup, so these are mass-to-volume estimates rather than guaranteed spool yields.

The same report cites an HDPE RecycleBot study that produced 2.2–3.2 mm filament, with 65% within the desired diameter range, and roughly 60 Wh per metre (about two-thirds heating and one-third motor energy; shredding energy was negligible in that study). These figures describe that study, not a benchmark for every PET system.
Diameter control determines whether a printer can use it
A strand that looks round is not necessarily printable. Variations in diameter change the delivered volume: an oversized section can overfeed or jam, while an undersized section can cause under-extrusion. Ovality, bubbles and surface contamination create additional problems.
An open-source filament-diameter sensor study tested measurement on ABS and PLA from different plastic sources and colors. Its relevance is practical: measurement is a process-control requirement, not a cosmetic add-on. A gauge or sensor lets an operator characterize output and, in systems that support feedback, adjust pulling or extrusion conditions.

Can failed prints be recycled?
Yes, when the failed parts are known to be one polymer and have not been contaminated by another material, adhesive, paint or embedded hardware. Sort by polymer and, where relevant, by grade or blend. Support material, filled filaments and unknown scraps should not enter a clean batch unless the process is designed and validated for them.

|---|---|---|
| Open-source PET project | Build and tune an extruder such as TechforTrade’s Thunderhead, with separate preparation and winding stages. | Maximum control, but substantial fabrication, guarding, calibration and maintenance responsibility. Thunderhead documentation describes the machine as under development. |

Is recycled filament cheaper or greener?
Material reuse can divert plastic from disposal, but the available figures do not establish that home extrusion is always cheaper or environmentally better than buying filament or using a local recycling service. Electricity, drying time, failed batches, equipment cost and maintenance all matter. Treat the project as a way to reuse selected material and learn process control, not as a guaranteed financial or environmental saving.
A realistic decision checklist
- Choose recycling if you can obtain a clean, known polymer stream, safely operate the machinery and accept tuning and variable output.
- Start with a controlled source—such as one known filament type or one bottle grade—rather than a mixed household collection.
- Buy an integrated system when reliable throughput, documentation and support matter more than fabrication.
- Build an open system when you have the workshop tools, measurement equipment and safety experience to develop and maintain it.
- Do not promise printer-ready filament until diameter, moisture handling and test prints show that your particular batch is consistent.
The Bottom Line
Waste plastic can become usable filament, and PET bottles are repurposable in principle. The dependable route is disciplined sorting, cleaning, drying, controlled extrusion and continuous diameter measurement—not simply melting scraps. Start with one known material, validate small batches, and choose equipment whose safety, preprocessing and control requirements you can actually meet.
