If a jointer is leaving tapered edges, a curved surface, or a gouge at the end of a pass, check the machine’s alignment before changing your technique. Start with the owner’s manual, disconnect power before adjustments, then inspect the tables, knives, fence, and guard before making a cautious test cut on scrap.
Understand what each adjustment controls
A jointer feeds stock across the infeed table, past the cutterhead, and onto the outfeed table. The infeed table sets the depth of cut. The fence supports the workpiece and guides its angle. The outfeed table supports the freshly cut surface, so it must align with the knives or inserts at their highest point.
As Woodcraft’s Paul Anthony puts it, “Though a relatively simple tool, the jointer requires an exacting setup.” The relationship among tables, knives, and fence matters: a machine that is out of alignment may not produce accurate cuts. Woodcraft’s tuning guide explains the checks, while the Grizzly G0857/G0858 manual describes the table relationships for those specific models.

Begin with the manual and a safe machine
Adjustment hardware and procedures differ by model and cutterhead. Use your machine’s manual for the correct knife-setting method, numeric settings, and locking steps; do not transfer a measurement or procedure from another jointer without confirming it applies. The JET 708466DXK JJ-6CSX manual, for example, describes checks for its specified models, not a universal setup.

- Find the manual for the exact model and cutterhead configuration, and identify its adjustment and locking instructions.
- Disconnect the jointer from power before adjusting or inspecting near the cutterhead. Do not reach toward or touch the knives.
- Keep the machine disconnected while cleaning and checking alignment. Restore power only when adjustments are complete and the machine is ready for operation.
The Boston University-hosted jointer manual also stresses disconnecting power before adjustment and using guards and push blocks.
Clean and inspect the tables
Remove dust, pitch, and other residue from the tables and fence so debris does not interfere with measurement or stock movement. Check table flatness with a precision straightedge and feeler gauge, and check table parallelism as your manual or setup procedure specifies. A straightedge and feeler gauge help reveal gaps; they do not replace the model’s prescribed alignment procedure.

Verify the outfeed table and knife height together
The critical relationship is between the outfeed table and the knife or insert at its high point. A common check places a straightedge on the outfeed table over the cutterhead and checks knife contact as the cutterhead is turned through its high point. Follow the manual’s instructions for how to do this safely and how the knife or table is adjusted; designs and mechanisms vary.
Check the knife height and alignment across the cutterhead as instructed, rather than relying on a check at one end alone. The JET manual calls for verifying knife height and parallelism before operation. If knives are worn or damaged, use replacement jointer knives that match the exact machine and cutterhead, and follow the manufacturer’s replacement procedure.

A jointer knife-setting jig can help with knife positioning; Woodcraft describes a shop-made jig and notes that commercial jigs are available. Choose a method that suits your cutterhead, checks the required points across the knife, and follows the owner’s manual. The available guidance does not establish one jig or method as best for all jointers.
Set the infeed table and fence for the cut
Set the infeed table to the depth required for the pass using the machine’s controls and scale. Set the fence square to the table for a square edge, or to the intended angle for a bevel. Lock the table and fence as directed in the manual, then confirm they remain secure.

Check safety features before cutting
Before restoring power, check that the cutterhead guard moves and returns as intended, the fence and tables are locked, and the infeed depth is set. The JET manual includes these items in its pre-operation checks. For surfacing, use push blocks or a hold-down as directed by the manual; keep hands clear of the cutterhead.

Make a test cut and read the result carefully
Once the setup is complete, reconnect power and make a cautious pass on scrap. This helps verify the settings and gives you a chance to feel how the machine feeds, but one good pass does not prove every alignment issue is resolved.

- A curved surface or a gouge or snipe near the end of a cut can be a clue that the outfeed table is too high or too low, respectively, according to the JET manual. Treat either symptom as a reason to recheck alignment, not proof of a single cause.
- If the edge is not square, check the fence angle and that the fence is secure.
- If results remain inconsistent, stop and recheck table flatness, table relationships, and knife height against the model’s procedure before continuing.
