TP-Link’s Aireal is a conversational AI layer for its Tapo smart-home and camera products and Deco networking app—not a new device or a feature guaranteed to work with every TP-Link product. It can help control supported devices, make sense of camera events, and troubleshoot network issues. As of August 2026, availability is still being rolled out, compatibility varies, and advanced Tapo camera features are tied to a subscription.
What is TP-Link Aireal?
Announced at CES on January 6, 2026, Aireal is TP-Link’s AI assistant for connected-home products. It is integrated into the Tapo and Deco app ecosystems, bringing natural-language interactions to smart-home controls, camera features, and network support. TP-Link said Aireal was developed in collaboration with Microsoft and integrates Microsoft Foundry; that does not mean Microsoft built the entire assistant. TP-Link’s CES announcement coverage and its Aireal announcement describe the service.
The two app contexts have different jobs: Tapo focuses on supported smart-home devices and camera intelligence, while Deco focuses on understanding and troubleshooting the home network. Aireal is best viewed as an optional software layer over compatible TP-Link products, not a replacement for ordinary device controls or network settings.

Tapo: device control and camera intelligence
TP-Link has demonstrated natural-language control and routine creation. Example requests include “Start vacuuming after I leave the house” and “Why is this device offline?” These are examples of the intended experience, not a promise that every command, device, or automation is supported. Check the app’s proposed action before saving a routine, particularly if it controls locks, alarms, or other consequential devices.

For supported cameras, the announced AI features include:
- Descriptions and summaries of detected events, rather than only generic motion labels.
- Natural-language searches of recorded footage—for example, asking to find a package that arrived yesterday.
- Combining repetitive alerts and producing daily or intelligent notifications.
- Assessing an event’s apparent risk level and providing an AI chat interface to help interpret what happened.
- Facial recognition where the model, region, account, and settings support it.
These features can make reviewing camera activity quicker, but AI descriptions and risk labels can be wrong or incomplete. Treat them as aids for finding and reviewing footage, not definitive evidence or a reliable identification of a person.
Deco: network guidance
For Deco, TP-Link describes Aireal as a way to understand the home network and get help with Wi-Fi problems and device connections. The public material does not provide a complete command list, supported-model matrix, or a detailed account of which settings the assistant can change. It is not a guarantee that Aireal can fix every connection problem or replace technical support.

AI guidance may help identify likely causes, but it cannot repair an ISP outage, damaged cable, failing modem, dead access point, or other physical fault. Conventional Deco diagnostics and your internet provider may still be necessary.
Tapo and Deco: different features and subscriptions

Tapo Care and HomeShield are separate service contexts, not interchangeable names for one subscription. TP-Link’s Tapo Care plan information lists Cloud, Cloud Advanced, and Cloud Advanced AI tiers. Cloud Advanced AI includes features such as AI summaries, video search, risk assessment, facial recognition where available, and AI Chat/Aireal.
Availability and compatible devices
TP-Link announced early access in January 2026 and said a full Tapo-app release was scheduled for Q2. In June, its support documentation still described Aireal-powered Tapo Care as gradually rolling out. The evidence supports a staged rollout as of August 2026—not universal availability for every TP-Link customer. Plans and access can differ by region, account, device, and software release.

Launch coverage identified early-access support for select products, including the Tapo C645D Kit, C465, and C710. Those examples do not establish that all units, regions, or Aireal features are supported today. TP-Link explicitly cautions that not all devices are compatible.

- Update the Tapo or Deco app and sign in with the TP-Link ID associated with your devices.
- Open the relevant AI feature or subscription area in that app.
- Check whether Aireal is offered for your account and which of your devices it lists as compatible.
- Review the local plan, price, and trial terms shown in the app before enrolling.
Do this before buying hardware specifically for Aireal. Compatibility is model-, region-, account-, and software-dependent; owning a Tapo camera, Deco system, or Archer router does not by itself guarantee access.
What does Aireal cost?
There is no single verified worldwide price to quote. TP-Link’s U.S. support material places Tapo’s advanced AI features in the Cloud Advanced AI tier, but says available plans and prices may vary by region and account. Use the price displayed in your app rather than assuming that an early announcement or a price from another market applies to you.

For Deco, TP-Link said some Aireal functions would be free and advanced AI capabilities would require HomeShield. Final Deco terms were not fully set out in the CES material, so check the Deco app for the actual features and subscription price available to your system. The January 6–31, 2026 U.S. promotional trial was time-limited and should not be assumed to remain available.

TP-Link says facial-recognition videos are encrypted and sent to cloud servers for recognition. It also says facial information is not used to train external AI models without explicit permission, and that users can disable facial recognition and delete stored facial information through face-management settings. These are specific claims about facial recognition—not proof that every Aireal feature runs locally, that no information is collected, or that all data is immediately removed when deleted.
The cited material does not set out a complete retention schedule or the processing architecture for every Aireal function. If cloud processing is a concern, review TP-Link’s privacy information and service terms, disable facial recognition if you do not want it, and consider whether local recording better fits your needs. Encryption in transit does not make a cloud feature equivalent to local-only processing.

Recognition and event analysis also depend on the camera view. Poor lighting, distance, obstructions, angle, and device settings can cause misses or misleading results. A face match should not be treated as proof of identity.
Who is Aireal a good fit for?
- Existing Tapo users: It may be useful if you have compatible devices, review frequent camera alerts, and want summaries or conversational footage search—provided you accept cloud services and any required recurring fee.
- Deco owners: It may offer a more approachable way to ask about connection problems, but its exact supported functions are not yet comprehensively documented. It is an aid, not a substitute for diagnosing ISP or hardware failures.
- New buyers: Choose a camera or mesh system because its core hardware suits your needs. Treat Aireal as a possible extra, and verify compatibility and subscription terms before purchase.
- Local-only or subscription-averse households: Aireal’s cloud-dependent advanced camera features may be a poor match. Conventional schedules, supported local recording, or standard network tools may be preferable.
- Security-critical use: Do not rely on AI summaries, risk labels, or face recognition as the sole basis for a security decision.
For deterministic automation, ordinary schedules and routines may be easier to verify than natural-language instructions. Local microSD or NVR recording can reduce reliance on cloud services, where supported. Technically advanced users may prefer a platform such as Home Assistant for deeper cross-brand control, at the cost of more setup and maintenance.
Limitations to keep in mind
- Compatibility is limited; a single account can contain both supported and unsupported devices.
- Features, prices, and eligibility can vary by country, region, account, and software release.
- Cloud outages, account issues, bandwidth limits, or privacy settings can reduce availability.
- Ambiguous natural-language requests may produce an unintended routine; verify the action before enabling it.
- Camera AI can misinterpret an event, miss a person, or identify a familiar face incorrectly.
- Advanced cloud AI features may end if a Tapo Care subscription lapses, even if basic camera functions or local recording remain available; check the terms for your model and plan.
- Network advice cannot resolve every ISP, wiring, modem, or hardware fault.
Bottom line
Aireal could make TP-Link’s smart-home controls and camera review more conversational, while offering Deco users a simpler starting point for network questions. Its practical value depends on compatible hardware, gradual account-level availability, cloud processing, and the cost of the relevant service. Check the feature and price in the Tapo or Deco app before buying or subscribing, and treat AI output as guidance—not a substitute for reliable controls, local recording, or human judgment.
