The gadget behind the viral “see through walls” claim is most likely Walabot DIY 2 or the closely related Walabot DIY 2 M. It is a handheld radio-frequency (radar) wall scanner that sends interpreted signals to a phone or connected display. It can indicate studs, pipes, wires and possible pest activity in compatible drywall or plywood—but it is not an X-ray camera, and it does not provide live video of everything inside a wall.
What the Walabot actually does
Walabot’s current DIY 2 family uses RF sensing to detect changes in materials, shape and movement behind a surface. The app turns those returns into an on-screen representation. In Image Mode, the software presents graphical indications of studs, pipes and wires. Expert Mode exposes more raw radar information, which can help when objects overlap or when the signal may indicate unusual movement or pest activity.
A displayed pipe or wire should therefore be read as “there is probably an object with these characteristics here,” not as a confirmed, detailed picture. Detection, software classification and precise identification are three different things. The first two can be useful for planning work; the third still needs context or confirmation.

Can it really find mice?
It may indicate pest activity, but it does not show a recognizable mouse video. Walabot’s own guide says Expert Mode can reveal pest infestations and discusses pests including mice and termites. A moving animal can create an unusual radar signature, while a stationary or deeply concealed animal may be much harder to distinguish from other reflections.
A single “pest” indication is not proof of an infestation, species or exact location. Repeat the scan from adjacent sections and at different times, then look for physical evidence such as droppings, gnaw marks, odors, scratching, entry gaps or damaged insulation. Persistent indications—especially near electrical wiring or plumbing—are a reason to call pest control rather than open the cavity casually.
The scanner cannot track a mouse continuously through a house, and it should not be treated as a substitute for traps, an acoustic inspection, a borescope or professional confirmation.

Depth and wall-material limits
Walabot advertises detection up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) inside drywall. That is a maximum specification, not a guarantee that every object will be identified at that depth. Effective range can shrink with insulation, moisture, multiple layers, dense construction, small or narrow objects, poor object orientation, nearby metal and interference.

For the current DIY 2 and DIY 2 M, Walabot lists drywall and plywood as supported materials. Its product information warns against relying on these models on lath and plaster, concrete, tile, brick, metal-backed walls, stucco and heavily textured surfaces. Older Walabot products had different support claims; do not transfer an older model’s capabilities to a current one. The DIY Plus support article illustrates why model-specific instructions matter.
How it compares with a normal stud finder
A basic electronic finder is usually cheaper and quicker when the job is simply locating a stud. Walabot’s advantage is a visual map and an Expert Mode that may make overlapping studs, pipes and wires easier to interpret. That extra information can also create false confidence: a software label is still an interpretation, not a certificate that drilling is safe.
For example, the FNIRSI WD-01 advertises wood, metal, copper pipes, rebar and live AC-wire detection, with target-specific ranges of up to 38 mm for wood, 50 mm for AC wire, 100 mm for metal pipe and 120 mm for rebar. It is a conventional detector, not a pest-imaging device.

- Check the surface. Confirm that the wall is drywall or plywood and that your phone is compatible with the current Walabot app.
- Connect and calibrate. Charge the scanner, connect it as directed and calibrate on a clean section of the wall.
- Start in Image Mode. Move slowly and steadily while keeping the unit flat and in consistent contact.
- Scan in more than one direction. Mark apparent edges and centers, and map the full path rather than trusting one isolated blob.
- Use Expert Mode for ambiguity. Overlapping objects or irregular returns may become easier to compare, but raw data requires more judgment.
- Cross-check. Compare the result with outlet and switch locations, plumbing fixtures, normal stud spacing, building plans, photos from construction, or a second detector.
- Apply a safety margin. Turn off relevant breakers and water supplies where practical. De-energizing a circuit does not prove that the route is harmless, and a scan showing “nothing” is not permission to drill blindly.
Walabot’s setup guide also recommends installing the app, calibrating, selecting a viewing mode and marking detected objects.

When a scan fails or looks confusing
No object appears
Unsupported material, excessive depth, poor calibration, an uneven contact surface, a small object or electronic interference can all produce a blank result. Recalibrate, test a clean area, slow down, try both modes and scan from another direction. If the wall is outside the supported list, stop treating the result as meaningful and use a suitable alternative.
Too many patterns appear
Metal mesh, foil-backed insulation, fasteners, textured surfaces and overlapping services can create dense or ambiguous returns. Scan a larger area, reduce sensitivity if the app permits it, and use building context to distinguish a likely stud from a pipe. Never drill based on one unexplained pattern.
A pest indication repeats
Repeat the scan at different times and from neighboring wall sections. Check for physical signs and call a pest professional if the indication persists. Do not describe a radar anomaly as proof of a live mouse.
It is not a thermal camera—or a borescope
RF wall imaging and thermal imaging answer different questions. A thermal camera maps temperature differences on the visible surface and may reveal a hot-water line, damp patch, radiant-heating circuit or air leak when there is enough contrast. It will not directly locate every cold pipe or animal in a cavity.

A borescope provides actual optical video, but it needs an existing opening, access route or small inspection hole. An inspection system such as the Wöhler SI 400 is therefore better when visual confirmation matters and access is available.

- Walabot DIY 2 or DIY 2 M: Best for repeat DIY work on ordinary drywall or plywood, especially where studs, pipes and wires may overlap and a visual display is useful.
- Basic detector: Better value when you only need a stud, metal pipe or live-wire indication. The FNIRSI WD-01 is one low-cost example.
- Professional radar: More appropriate for concrete, masonry, unusual assemblies, commercial inspections or expensive consequences. Bosch’s D-tect 200 C manual shows that professional systems still use material-specific modes and have limits; some empty plastic pipes may not be recognized.
- Borescope: Choose this when you can access the cavity and need a real image.
- Thermal camera: Choose this for heat, moisture or air-leak diagnostics rather than general object finding.
Price and availability snapshot
US prices observed on August 16, 2026 were $179.95 for the DIY 2 M sale listing (regularly shown as $199.95), with bundles listed at $187.95 and $242.95. The DIY 2 page showed $199.95 but the base unit was marked sold out at the time. Prices, bundles and stock can change, so treat these as dated signals rather than permanent pricing.
An announced product such as Resolv InSite Pro is not a normal currently available consumer alternative: its page listed waitlist pricing, targeted a Q4 2026 launch and stated that required FCC authorization had not yet been obtained.

When to stop scanning and call a professional
Get professional confirmation when the wall is concrete, brick, tile, stucco, lath and plaster or metal-backed; when a suspected wire is near the proposed hole; when there is an active leak; when pest activity may have damaged wiring or structure; or when cutting could affect a load-bearing, fire-rated or shared building assembly. A scanner reduces uncertainty—it never guarantees a clear path.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Walabot DIY 2 show a live video of a mouse?
No. It uses radar signals and interpreted graphics. Walabot says it can indicate pest activity, but a reading is not conventional video or proof of a specific mouse.
Can I use DIY 2 on a concrete or tiled wall?
The current DIY 2 and DIY 2 M product pages list drywall and plywood and warn against concrete, tile, brick, stucco, lath and plaster, and metal-backed walls.
Is a clear Walabot scan safe permission to drill?
No. Missed detections and misclassification are possible. Cross-check the route, keep a safety margin, shut off relevant services where practical and seek professional confirmation for high-risk locations.

Walabot DIY 2 and DIY 2 M are useful radar-assisted scanners for compatible drywall and plywood, particularly when several hidden services overlap. Their “mice” feature should be understood as an indication of possible pest activity—not a camera view—and the up-to-4-inch claim is a best-case limit. Use the scanner to reduce risk, then verify before drilling.
