TheOutlet replaces a standard duplex receptacle with a wall-mounted unit that reveals two more outlets when you press its button. It can tidy a fixed spot crowded with chargers, but it is not a plug-in power strip: installation, electrical-box space and circuit capacity all matter. It adds receptacles, not power.
What TheOutlet is—and how it works
Made by Secret Sockets LLC, TheOutlet is a permanent replacement for a wall receptacle, not a four-outlet strip that plugs into one. In its closed position, it looks much like a conventional outlet. Press its button and a concealed pair of receptacles rotates outward, giving you four receptacles at that wall location. The product is designed for a single-gang box, but the specific box still has to meet the unit’s dimensions, wiring and local-code requirements. Product overview · Manufacturer’s storefront
There is a standard version and a version with two USB charging ports. Those extra sockets all draw from the same branch circuit as the original outlet. The mechanism changes how many plugs you can connect; it does not create a new circuit or increase the circuit’s capacity.

These figures come from the installation and specification document. The 1,500 W warning is not permission to load an entire branch circuit to that level: other outlets and equipment on the circuit count too, and appliance starting loads and applicable electrical rules matter. Four phone chargers are a very different demand from four heating appliances.

Avoid treating it as a way to run several high-draw devices. Space heaters, hair dryers, portable air conditioners, microwaves, kettles, toasters, hot plates and powerful tools can put substantial load on a circuit. Check each device’s wattage and the circuit’s other loads; when in doubt, ask an electrician rather than relying on the number of available sockets.
The USB model’s specified 5 V/2.1 A output is basic USB charging, not evidence of USB-C Power Delivery or modern fast charging. The documentation reviewed also does not establish a surge-protection rating. More outlets, overload protection, surge suppression, GFCI protection and AFCI protection are different things. Do not assume TheOutlet replaces any protection you need from a properly selected surge protector or from the receptacle and circuit.

The main catch: replacing an outlet is not plugging in an accessory
Installation involves opening the electrical box and wiring a replacement device. The manufacturer’s sequence calls for shutting off power at the breaker, verifying the receptacle is de-energized, removing the old receptacle, connecting line, neutral and ground as specified, securing the unit, then refitting the faceplate and button and testing it. Follow the exact instructions for the model and local code. The instructions require a ground connection and specify copper or copper-clad conductors; they also rule out installations where the receptacle’s halves are separately supplied, or split-wired. Read the manufacturer’s instructions before buying or installing.

Builder Tim Carter’s review flags physical fit as a real-world concern, particularly with 12-gauge wiring and daisy-chained conductors. Box volume, wire fill and the manufacturer’s dimensional requirements all matter; a nominally standard box may still be unsuitable.

Have a licensed electrician assess or install it if the box is shallow or crowded, conductors are aluminum or otherwise incompatible, the receptacle is split-wired, you cannot positively identify the conductors, or local rules require licensed work. Also seek advice before replacing a GFCI- or AFCI-protected receptacle or one on a specialized circuit if you are unsure how protection will be preserved. If you cannot shut off and verify power safely, do not proceed.

It can be a better-looking solution for a fixed cluster of modest loads—say, chargers and a lamp beside a nightstand, desk or media console—when the box can accept it and there is room for the outlets to unfold. It removes a loose strip and its cord from the floor or desktop. The USB model may also reduce the need for separate charging bricks.

A conventional strip is the more practical choice when you need portability, a long cord, more outlets, individual switches or documented surge protection. It is also the safer bet if the wall box is crowded, installation is not allowed (as in some rentals), or the devices move around. The deployed outlets need clearance, so furniture close to the wall can block them; large transformer plugs may also obstruct neighboring sockets. Check both clearances before committing.
For a simpler wall upgrade when USB charging—not two extra AC receptacles—is the priority, consider a standard USB receptacle instead. If you do need a corded four-outlet unit, alternatives include the Legrand/Wiremold outlet center (four outlets and a six-foot cord), the Media Technologies outlet center (four AC outlets plus USB-A and USB-C), and a Philips four-outlet extension socket with individual switching and circuit-breaker protection. These remain visible, corded products; check each model’s specifications and protection features rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

Price and availability
The manufacturer’s storefront displayed The OUTlet at $49.59 on August 18, 2026. That listing alone does not confirm stock, shipping terms or which configuration the price covers. A Walmart listing for a USB version showed $29.95 but was out of stock when checked. Who should consider it?
TheOutlet makes sense if you want a tidy, permanent four-receptacle point for several low-wattage devices, do not need surge protection from the device itself, and have a compatible box—or are prepared to have an electrician check and install it. Skip it if you need a movable strip, the box is cramped, or you want more circuit capacity. Its clever mechanism solves an outlet-access problem, not a power-supply problem.
