The X1Plus Expander makes a Bambu Lab X1 or X1 Carbon considerably more extensible, adding wired networking, USB, GPIO, I²C sensors, status controls, and external-camera automation. It is not, however, a speed, accuracy, or print-quality upgrade. It is an open-hardware project for makers, workshops, print farms, and technically confident owners who are willing to install unofficial X1Plus custom firmware.
What the X1Plus Expander actually is
The X1Plus Expander is a third-party expansion board designed as a companion to the community-developed X1Plus firmware. It is not a replacement Bambu Lab motherboard, and it does not change the X1’s motion system, hotend, build volume, acceleration, or fundamental printing process.
Instead, it adds an I/O and connectivity layer. The board is installed between the printer’s application-processor board and chamber camera, then mounted behind the touchscreen in a suitable printed or purchased enclosure. Its onboard Raspberry Pi RP2040 handles GPIO control, while a Microchip LAN9514 provides the USB hub and Ethernet functions.

There is an important compatibility distinction. The product listing is specifically framed around the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon, while the X1Plus project identifies support for the X1 and X1 Carbon. That does not establish compatibility with the X1E, P1P, P1S, or A1-series printers.

Wired Ethernet
The board provides a 10/100-Mbps Ethernet connection through the LAN9514 controller. This can be valuable in a workshop or construction-fabrication environment where a printer is installed in a fixed location, where wireless coverage is unreliable, or where several machines need a more predictable network connection.
It is not gigabit Ethernet. The benefit is connection stability and network topology, not high-bandwidth performance. It also does not make prints faster.
USB expansion
Two USB 2.0 Type-A ports can be used with peripherals supported by the X1Plus software environment. Cameras are an obvious example, but compatibility is not automatic for every webcam, storage device, or USB accessory. Device drivers, power requirements, and X1Plus support still matter.

Four GPIO expansion connectors expose eight GPIO lines each, along with power and ground. The board also includes a 3.3-V STEMMA-compatible I²C connector for compatible sensor breakouts.
The I²C interface is shared with the RP2040 interface on the left-most GPIO connector. That makes the board flexible, but it also means builders need to understand addressing, voltage levels, wiring, and software configuration before connecting multiple devices.
The published power limits are important:
- 3.3 V: 1 A maximum total across all ports.
- 5 V: 2 A maximum total across all ports and USB.
- Integrated 24-V-to-5-V regulator: up to 2.5 A.
These outputs are not a general-purpose power source for heaters, motors, pumps, long LED installations, or arbitrary high-current loads. Larger loads may need driver circuitry and a separate power supply. The product page limits short LED strips powered directly by the Expander to 500 mA and recommends external 5-V power injection for longer strips.
What can you build with it?
The board is most useful when it connects printer events to equipment outside the printer. The following examples combine the Expander with X1Plus software; plugging in the board alone does not create all of these finished workflows.

1. A wired workshop printer
Ethernet can provide a fixed network connection for a printer positioned in a workshop, fabrication area, or print farm. This is most compelling when Wi-Fi dropouts are costly or when the printer must remain reachable from a controlled network.
2. Environmental monitoring
Through I²C or GPIO, compatible temperature, humidity, or air-quality sensors can feed data into the printer’s software environment. A Sensirion SHT41, for example, can monitor temperature and humidity, while a PMSA003I breakout can be used for particulate or air-quality projects. Useful deployment still requires sensor configuration, data logging, and—if desired—Home Assistant integration.
3. Print-farm status signals
The optional Andon module includes 25 programmable RGB LEDs, buttons, and a beeper. It can show states such as printing, completed, failed, or awaiting attention. That is more useful for a rack of machines or a noisy workshop than for a single printer sitting beside its operator.
4. External-camera timelapses
The optional shutter-release module provides two 2.5-mm TRS-style camera connections for compatible DSLR and mirrorless camera shutter inputs. It can trigger a higher-quality external-camera workflow at selected layers.

5. Programmable lighting
An addressable-LED level-shifter module can support WS2812B or NeoPixel-style lighting. Lights could indicate printer status, illuminate a work area, or provide a visual alert when a job needs attention. Users who only want a basic light strip may find a simpler lighting controller more appropriate.
6. Buttons, alerts, and custom macros
The X1Plus Actions system can connect printer events, G-code triggers, buttons, GPIO devices, and external hardware. Documented examples include beeping at a selected layer, jogging the Z-axis after a button press, waiting for an external device to report readiness, building a guided cold-pull macro, and triggering a camera shutter at selected layers. These are programmable automation capabilities, not one-click features guaranteed for every accessory.

Why X1Plus firmware is required
The Expander depends on X1Plus, a community-developed firmware project for the X1 and X1 Carbon. Its documented features include custom actions, calibration visualizers, SSH access, a Linux shell, statistics, screen customization, and support for data from Expander-connected sensors.
The latest release visible in the checked project repository was X1Plus 3.1. Version availability and instructions can change, so use the current project documentation rather than treating that version number as permanent.
X1Plus runs on the printer’s application-processor board. The separate MC board continues to control the motion system. The project describes its role as closer to an application-layer expansion such as OctoPrint than to replacing the motion firmware with Klipper or Marlin. That is why the Expander can add networking and automation without becoming a mechanical-performance modification.
The vendor explicitly states that the Expander works in conjunction with X1Plus and that installing X1Plus requires rooting the printer. This is the central trade-off: the board’s capabilities are substantially broader than a normal accessory, but so is the installation and support risk.
Installation: separate the firmware and hardware steps
Do not approach this as a simple plug-in upgrade. There are two distinct jobs: preparing the custom firmware and physically installing the board.

Firmware preparation
- Use a compatible microSD card and follow the current X1Plus installation guide for the exact printer model.
- Install or boot X1Plus from the microSD card.
- Leave the card inserted while using X1Plus.
- Use the X1Plus boot menu when you need to return to OEM firmware.
The documented boot model checks for custom firmware on the microSD card during startup, while OEM firmware remains selectable through the boot menu. The project also warns users not to remove the card while the printer is powered on. This may require changing the way you normally transfer files and manage the printer.
Hardware installation
The Expander is connected between the AP board and chamber-monitoring camera and mounted behind the LCD screen. The product includes a wiring harness and mounting screws. The enclosure is separate unless you print one yourself or purchase the listed enclosure.

Because connector positions, cable routing, screw locations, and menu labels can change with hardware or software revisions, follow the current manufacturer and X1Plus instructions for those details. Do not rely on an installation guide written for an earlier revision.
Before starting, back up important files, power the printer down fully, and make sure you have a recovery plan. After installation, verify one function at a time: first boot and display operation, then Ethernet, then any sensor or accessory. Isolating changes makes wiring or configuration faults easier to diagnose.

Unofficial firmware and support
X1Plus is community-developed and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Bambu Lab. Its documentation warns that custom firmware can potentially leave a printer in a difficult-to-recover state. Recovery is often technically possible but is not guaranteed, and a replacement AP board may not be available from Bambu Lab if a serious failure occurs.
Do not treat this as an automatic statement that a warranty is void. The more accurate conclusion is that unofficial firmware may affect eligibility for manufacturer or retailer support, and the project warns that support may be declined.
Compatibility is narrower than the headline suggests
Evidence in the supplied product and project pages supports the X1 family, specifically the X1 Carbon product listing and X1Plus support for the X1 and X1 Carbon. It does not support a general claim that the board works with every Bambu Lab printer. Confirm the current documentation for your exact model before buying.
Integration takes work
The board exposes useful interfaces, but a port is not the same as a finished feature. Depending on the project, you may need X1Plus configuration, shell or Python scripting, G-code triggers, GPIO logic, Home Assistant setup, adapter cables, device drivers, or custom modules.
Power and electrical design
Shared power limits can be easy to overlook. Check the current draw of every connected device, observe 3.3-V logic requirements, and use appropriate level shifters, drivers, fuses, and external supplies where necessary. Never assume a GPIO pin can drive a motor, relay coil, heater, pump, or long LED strip directly.

Price and likely total cost
On the Crowd Supply page checked on August 16, 2026, the main board was listed in stock at $135. The optional printed mounting bracket and enclosure was listed at $29. Prices, stock, shipping, and fulfillment dates can change.

How it compares with alternatives
Bambu Lab OEM extension hardware
The Expander’s comparison describes Bambu’s official extension approach as simpler to install, with integrated power, GPIO, LED support, and camera-shutter capability without modified firmware. It does not offer the same open-source modular ecosystem or I²C interface described for the X1Plus Expander. Verify current regional availability and exact compatibility separately before choosing it.

BLLEDController is the more focused option for users who mainly want lighting. It is not the equivalent of the Expander’s Ethernet, GPIO, I²C, and modular add-on platform.
Separate Raspberry Pi and Home Assistant setup
A separate Linux computer can offer a broader software ecosystem without modifying the printer’s firmware. The trade-off is more external wiring, power management, enclosure work, maintenance, and integration complexity.
Keep the printer stock
For many owners, the sensible alternative is no hardware modification: use Bambu Studio, Bambu Handy, the existing Wi-Fi connection, the built-in camera, external smart plugs, lighting, or a separate Home Assistant automation layer. You give up direct GPIO integration but retain the lowest-risk setup.
Who should buy the X1Plus Expander?
Buy it if you specifically need wired Ethernet, external sensors, programmable status indicators, physical buttons, audible alerts, external-camera timelapses, or an open platform for custom automation. It is particularly well suited to makers, automation enthusiasts, camera users, and print-farm operators who can troubleshoot Linux, firmware, wiring, GPIO, and I²C systems.

Consider it carefully if you have one specific requirement—such as a sensor or camera trigger—and are comfortable accepting the firmware and integration work. Calculate the complete project cost rather than comparing only the $135 board price.
Skip it if your goal is faster printing, better first-layer consistency, higher dimensional accuracy, or improved built-in-camera quality. It is also a poor fit if you want a risk-free, plug-and-play accessory, depend heavily on official Bambu Lab support, or would need to hire someone for firmware and wiring work.
The phrase “takes your Bambu Lab X1 to the next level” is accurate only if “next level” means more hackable, networkable, and automatable. For print performance, the board changes essentially nothing. For a technically capable workshop that wants to connect the printer to sensors, lights, cameras, and automation, it can be a meaningful capability upgrade—but it remains a project, not a conventional printer upgrade.
