The Superserter is a downloadable, mostly plastic press for installing brass heat-set inserts in 3D-printed parts. Its press body is designed to print without metal guide rods, rails, or bearings; the working setup still needs a soldering iron or other controlled heat source, the insert being installed, and any fasteners specified by the current files. Created by TimNummy, it targets a 256 × 256 mm build plate and is designed to print without supports. That makes it a practical project for repeat insert work—not a necessary replacement for freehand installation or a rigid metal press.
What the Superserter does
A heat-set insert provides a durable threaded attachment point in a plastic part. Unlike a screw cutting its own threads directly into plastic, a brass insert can better withstand repeated assembly and disassembly. It is heated and embedded into a prepared hole while the surrounding thermoplastic softens.
Doing that freehand with a soldering iron can make it difficult to keep the insert vertical, control its depth, and avoid deforming the part. The Superserter is intended to guide the heated insert down into the workpiece, making alignment and positioning easier for parts that fit its working area. The general process is described by 3Druck.
The “100% 3D printed” description applies to the press mechanism and structural parts, not the complete installation system. The tool still depends on a heat source, a suitable iron tip or adapter, and brass inserts. Check the current model files for any screws or other small hardware required for assembly.

How the printed press works
A printed frame supports the workpiece while a manually operated mechanism moves the iron and heated insert toward the hole. Interlocking printed geometry constrains that movement instead of relying on linear rails, metal guide rods, sliders, or bearings. The project is also designed to work with Gridfinity storage.
The design’s aim is controlled, more repeatable movement; available coverage does not establish measured insertion accuracy, force capacity, wear life, or a maximum safe operating temperature. Those should not be treated as proven specifications. See the creator’s assembly and demonstration video for a visual overview.

- An FDM printer with enough usable build area for the largest model parts, plus filament.
- A soldering iron or other controlled heat source and a compatible tip, holder, or adapter.
- Heat-set threaded inserts sized for the part and its prepared holes.
- Basic cleanup and assembly tools.
- Any screws, nuts, washers, or other small components listed in the current MakerWorld files.
The creator reportedly printed the project in PLA and described it as sufficiently stiff. That is evidence of the creator’s material choice, not a controlled comparison. PETG or polycarbonate may be considered for parts exposed to greater heat or stress, but the available coverage does not establish either as a validated upgrade. Material stiffness, heat resistance, printer capability, and fit can all affect performance.

Check fit before printing and using it
Printer, iron, and adapter
Confirm the largest part fits your printer’s usable build area. Then compare your iron’s barrel or shaft diameter, hot-zone length, tip shape, handle, cord, and connector against the holder options in the current files. Community feedback reports that some users needed to adapt the holder for small dimensional differences; compatibility with a particular iron model should not be assumed without checking its dimensions against the design.
Do not clamp the iron in a way that damages its casing or insulation, traps its cord, or allows the hot tool to fall. Keep printed holder material away from hot metal and check for softening, creep, or warping during use. No safe temperature or duty cycle is established for this printed fixture.

Workpiece size and shape
The part must fit beneath the press and allow the hole to line up with the tool’s axis. Throat reach, vertical clearance, opening width, recessed holes, walls, bosses, and enclosure panels can all prevent access. Flat, parallel support surfaces make positioning easier; an irregular or angled part may not sit squarely. Users have reported that some parts do not fit and that tall parts can be difficult to reach. If the workpiece cannot be placed securely under the tool, freehand installation or a larger press may be the better choice.
Use the right insert and install it carefully
Choose inserts designed for thermal installation in thermoplastics, not ordinary press-fit or injection-molding inserts. Seller listings can blur those categories. A Hackaday discussion notes that a heat-set insert may have a narrower lead-in to help it center, while an injection-molding insert may be unsuitable for the same installation method. Match the insert’s outside diameter and length to the part, use the insert maker’s recommended hole size where available, and test on scrap before committing a finished component.

The following is a practical procedure, not a claim that every step is the creator’s official assembly manual. The current model instructions and the insert manufacturer’s guidance take precedence.
- Download the current files from MakerWorld. Check the parts list, iron-holder options, and assembly instructions before printing.
- Print using settings documented with the current model. Do not assume an unverified layer height, nozzle, infill, or print duration.
- Inspect parts for warping, first-layer bulging, blobs, and damaged contact surfaces. Assemble the mechanism cold and check that it moves smoothly without excessive wobble or binding.
- Confirm the iron is held securely by a suitable holder or adapter. Choose the correct heat-set insert and prepare the workpiece hole according to the insert guidance.
- Place and support the part so the hole is directly under the tool axis. Heat the insert with the iron or insert tip, then lower it gradually while maintaining alignment.
- Stop at the intended depth rather than forcing the insert below the surface. Keep the tool steady as the plastic cools, then remove the iron and inspect for tilt, excess plastic, or damaged threads.
- Let the part cool before testing the thread with its intended screw. Keep the iron attended and away from printed components when it is hot.
Temperature, dwell time, hole size, insert geometry, insertion speed, and filament all affect the result. Do not transfer one generic temperature setting across PLA, PETG, ABS, nylon, or other materials. Tune the process on scrap made from the same material.
Common problems and practical fixes
- Crooked insert: The part may not be flat or square under the tool, or the adapter may have too much play. Check alignment cold, reduce adapter looseness, and test on scrap with a flat support surface.
- Insert sinks too far: Excess heat, dwell time, downward force, or an oversized hole can contribute. Use a visible depth reference or suitable stop and tune the process on a test piece.
- Raised plastic ring: Displaced plastic can rise around the insert. A community suggestion is to add a small chamber around the hole to give that material somewhere to flow; verify the change on a test part.
- Binding or loose motion: Warping, first-layer errors, elephant’s foot, rough surfaces, or tight clearances may affect the printed interfaces. Remove only obstructing material, correct the print issue, or reprint distorted parts rather than sanding away fit indiscriminately.
- Base shifts during pressing: The plastic base may be light for the setup. A non-slip mat or clamp can help; ballast such as sand has been suggested by a user, but is not a documented feature.
- Workpiece will not fit: Limited reach or clearance is a design constraint, not a heat-setting problem. Use a different workholding approach, install by hand, or choose a larger press.
Superserter, freehand iron, or metal press?
| Approach | Best suited to | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Freehand soldering iron | Occasional inserts, awkward or large parts, and users who already have a steady technique | Minimal setup and flexible access, but alignment and depth depend more on the operator. Community members report installing hundreds or thousands of inserts by hand; a press is not essential for competent users. |
| Superserter | Repeat work on parts that fit, especially for a maker who already owns a printer and iron | Can provide a guided workflow without metal rails or bearings, but requires printing and assembly, depends on iron and part fit, and remains a plastic fixture subject to heat and wear. |
| Metal arbor press or commercial installation tool | Frequent or production use, higher rigidity needs, or workpieces that demand a different reach or fixture | Typically a more substantial and durable tool, but costs more, takes space, and may still need a soldering iron, heater, or compatible tooling. |
For the Superserter, compare the time and material needed to print and assemble it with the time saved over your normal method. If you only fit a few inserts now and then, printing a dedicated fixture may be more work than installing them by hand. If you regularly install inserts in accessible parts and value a guided setup, the model is a low-hardware-cost project when you already own the printer and iron. For difficult geometry or production-level duty, a larger or metal tool is the more appropriate class of fixture.
